Talk:List of references in third-party video games
Name Change
Is List of Mario references in non-Nintendo video games more appropriate page name than List of Mario references in third-party video games? - Infinite8 08:49, 27 July 2017 (EDT)
Listing of Platforms
I would like to ask: something that was inconsistent is the listing of platforms, as some of them lists the platform of the game, but others left out the description. Some even go with a vague "Multiplatform". What is the standard? Winstein (talk) 01:29, 14 December 2018 (EST)
Splitting pages
With the increasing amount of licensed Mario crossovers and cameos in games nowadays, I think it'd be a good idea to follow Zelda Wiki's example and split this page into two: one listing licensed Mario cameos (such as the alternate Mario costumes in Tekken Tag Team Tournament 2), and one listing unlicensed references (such as the off-brand "Mario" character in The Simpsons Game). --Bee Kirby (talk) 15:30, June 16, 2019 (EDT)
Elytra
Currently the Elytra from Minecraft is listed as a reference to the Wing Cap. I attempted to remove this on the basis that gliding in video games isn't an obscure concept, but it was reverted because they have the same mechanic of swooping up and down to gain momentum. I still don't really see this as an intentional reference though, and I've played other games that have gliding items with identical mechanics (specifically all three editions of Disney Infinity and Lego DC Supervillains come to mind). I'm convinced this is just a common video game mechanic and not intentionally a reference. Of course, this could easily be settled if anyone finds anything from Mojang developers specifically mentioning the Wing Cap as an inspiration for the Elytra. Thoughts? -- Too Bad! - Exactly, I think this entry is pretty weak. A loose concept using similar controls to something that appeared in one game doesn't seem intentional to me, and I can't find any developer comments or such relating the Elytra with the Wing Cap. I'd say to remove it. Scrooge200 (talk)

Unused content
So in Hebereke no Popoon (Arcade), there's an unused sprite for Roy Koopa, likely meant as a placeholder for cutscenes. Would it be worth mentioning? Cuz the list of Mario references in Nintendo video games mentions the unused Mario model from Pikmin. --LucianoTheWindowsFan (talk) 13:04, April 15, 2021 (EDT)
Mario reference in Sonic the Hedgehog (16-Bit) prototype
In the prototype for Sonic the Hedgehog (16-Bit, 1991), Sonic has an act clear animation resembling Mario's famous jumping pose. This is referenced in Sonic Mania. Yours truly, Princess Toadstoo-- I mean NintendoFan08. 16:58, January 7, 2023 (EST)
- Mario didn't invent "punching upwards whiles jumping." Sonic is just using it as a "yay" gesture. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 16:32, October 5, 2022 (EDT)
Catlateral Damage
In Catlateral Damage, one of the things you can knock down is a fictional video game called God's Tower, which has the same blue ladders and red girders as Donkey Kong on the box. Does this count? Sadly there's no pictures I can show.--74.64.68.192
DC Injustice 2
During an interaction between Supergirl and Brainiac (I think), Supergirl will say “your princess is in another castle, Brainiac”. Here’s the video I got this info from: https://youtu.be/0vibZl63OYg Yours truly, Princess Toadstoo-- I mean NintendoFan08. 15:00, March 9, 2023 (EST)
The Wreck-It Ralph videogame
I have watched all the Wii cutscenes with dialogue, but Felix's (handy boy) "Who needs mushrooms [...]" dialogue never comes up. Even DS and 3DS not have the mushroom quote. Perhaps this quote is simply unused data found in the game files? Let me know. PnnyCrygr

The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madrock
I don’t know if this counts as a reference, or it’s purely a coincidence, but two of the Mode-7 racing tracks in the stadium spaces on the board have the exact same layouts as "Mario Circuit 1" and "Donut Plains 1" from Super Mario Kart. SoshiTheYoshi
Marvel Super Hero Squad: The Infinity Gauntlet
In Reptil and Spider-Man's mission, there's a part where you have to climb up bent ramps while Abomination is tossing down barrels just like in 25m and an 8-Bit version of the Super Hero Squad Show theme plays. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 12:34, December 30, 2024 (EST)
Pizza Tycoon
I found a reference in Pizza Tycoon, In the Rome scenario, There are characters called [Mario] and [Luigi].
Where did i found: https://bestdosgames.com/games/pizza-tycoon 103.200.32.8
- There needs to be more to it than that to be considered a reference. Mario and Luigi are common Italian names.

Split references in unused content to a list of references in video game pre-release and unused content

Similarly to what I said regarding splitting content from the list of unreleased media to a list of proposed media, I believe that references in both third and first-party video games that are visible commercially should be considered different from references in first and third-party games that were either removed or likely used as placeholders, since the references that were left in were meant to be seen by the public, and references that were removed were either used as placeholders (i.e. T.T.'s appearance in Sea of Thieves) or removed before the public could officially see them.
The resulting list page would look something like this, and would contain both first and third-party games.

Split
- Nelsonic (talk) Per proposal.
- Rykitu (talk) This time I believe the page is too large. I am for splitting a page that deserves to be split.
- Camwoodstock (talk) Per proposal, since the comments clarified this wouldn't interfere with potential other splits for the page.

Don't split

We would be remissed not to mention that in the Discord, about a week or so ago, the prospect came up of already splitting this article by another method, either an A-M and N-Z alphabetical split or something more sophisticated. Would this just exist as its own unique thing past how we might split the main article later? ~Camwoodstock ( talk • contribs )

- @Camwoodstock Yeah, I was just thinking due to the difference between a reference such as those in Disney Infinity, which were meant to be seen by the general public, and those that were either removed before the general public could see them or were never meant to be seen by the public (i.e. Luigi's appearance in a pre-release version of Sega GT). So, yes, I think this should be its own thing. Nelsonic (talk) 10:22, March 18, 2025 (EDT)
I feel like the title for this split page should be clearer what it's referring to. Maybe "List of references in video game pre-release and unused content" or "List of references in pre-release and unused video game content" or "List of pre-release and unused references in video games"? Any of those could work. Hewer (talk · contributions · edit count) 14:35, March 18, 2025 (EDT)
