Madame Clairvoya, Luigi's Mansion

Madame Clairvoya is a portrait ghost in Luigi's Mansion and its remake. She is a fortune-teller and the only portrait ghost who assists Luigi on his journey. Madame Clairvoya has a light-blue body, yellowish eyes with purple eyeshadow, and a face partly obscured by purple veil appearing to depict the mark of the seer. Clairyvoya wears a long red colored dress and a violet headscarf that covers her long pale hair. She has a few items of jewelry including two earrings and bracelets as well as a golden necklace. "Madame" is a common name used by fortune-tellers, while "Clairvoya" is a play on "clairvoyance," which refers to extra-sensory perception (ESP) and the ability to read into the future. Clairvoya has the ability to read fortunes by examining personal belongings. She also owns a crystal ball to help her see events nearly 49 days into the future, likely referencing the belief in Buddhism of it taking 49 days for one's spirit to be reborn after death.[1] Her portrait number in the gallery is 7.[2]

History[edit]

Luigi's Mansion[edit]

Madame Clairvoya is encountered in the Fortune-teller's Room in Luigi's Mansion, after Luigi shines his flashlight on her crystal ball for a while. He can bring Clairvoya five of Mario's dropped items from around the mansion for evaluation: Mario's Hat, Mario's Glove, Mario's Shoe, Mario's Letter, and Mario's Star. The items can be brought to Madame Clairvoya in no particular order for her to determine the events around the mansion. Madame Clairvoya gives a different reading for the first,[3] second,[4] third,[5] fourth,[6] and fifth items,[7] predicting the arrival of Bowser (later revealed to be a large decoy suit assisting King Boo). After the fifth item, Madame Clairvoya loses her fortune-telling abilities and begs to be returned to her portrait frame, fearing the arrival of Bowser. She giggles as the doors seal, and Luigi can immediately begin vacuuming Madame Clarivoya afterward. Despite this, she may sometimes drop a Poison Mushroom.

In the remake's Boss Rush mode, Madame Clairvoya's heart is exposed the instant after the crystal ball is shone.

If you wish to know more of your Mario, bring more of his dropped items!" – Madame Clairvoya. Luigi's Mansion.

Is Bowser somewhere in this mansion? I cannot believe it... And yet I see it... I thought that Mario had soundly defeated Bowser! Has King Boo somehow revived Bowser? This could be horrible! Well, for you....... Uggghh! Ahhh no, the powers leave me! The spirits depart! This is all I can show you, Luigi... That was the last of my power. But I have given words to what the spirits have shown... so I can return to my painting satisfied. Send me there now, you vacuum-wielding rogue! Ahhhhh!
