Melody Pianissima, Luigi's Mansion

Melody Pianissima is a portrait ghost in Luigi's Mansion and its remake. She is an expert pianist and an apparent fan of video games. She wears a maroon dress with a belt. Melody has a light-blue body, a small nose, yellow eyes, and long, blond hair. Her portrait number in Professor E. Gadd's gallery is 5.[1] Her first name is a musical term for the main line of music in a composition, while her last name is a play on "pianissimo," a musical notation that means "to play very softly", with the typically feminine "a" ending in place of the o.

Melody is located in the Conservatory. After Luigi lastly goes to the grand piano[2] after activating every other instrument to play the Super Mario Bros. theme, Melody compliments Luigi's music.[3] Right afterward, Melody asks Luigi if he wants to hear her piano sonata,[4] though proceeds to play either the athletic music from Super Mario Bros. 3 or the underwater music from Super Mario Bros. anyway. If Luigi incorrectly answers a question about the composition, Melody shouts in frustration as she puts her hands down on the piano before stating she had put her heart and soul into the composition before disappearing, requiring Luigi to exit then re-enter the room. If Luigi gives the correct answer, Melody causes her music sheets to go flying at Luigi[5] while playing a composition. Melody stops playing the piano and exposes her heart after Luigi either vacuums or shoots fire at the music sheets, making her vulnerable to a stun from the flashlight. Once Melody is vacuumed into the Poltergust 3000, a chest with the key to the Dining Room appears.[6]

Shivers is smitten with Melody, but she is dismissive of him.[7]

Notes[edit]

  • A track, Totaka's Song, is found within the game's data and was originally going to be a third option for what song Melody was going to play.[citation needed] Despite this, Totaka's Song can still be heard by leaving the control scheme screen up in the Training Room of E. Gadd's lab and waiting for roughly a minute and a half.
  • Melody is the first pianist boss-ghost of the Luigi's Mansion series, followed by the Poltergeists in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon and Amadeus Wolfgeist in Luigi's Mansion 3.
