removing in-game Japanese name citations
Hi, is it okay if I remove references for in-game Japanese names? For example, check Rawk Hawk's article. I don't think it's necessary, and fansites aren't encyclopedic sources, in my opinion, unless they have some official merit to them. Super Mario RPG (talk) 12:57, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
- I would keep the references there, and I think TMK generally is a trustworthy fan site for the information there. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 13:09, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
Main-wiki q
I asked something on the main-wiki template, if you'd like to take a look. The reason why I tell an admin is because the template is protected and I had an idea on how to help users access the main partner wikis for coverage on certain topics, like how Link would obviously be Zelda Wiki, Nintendo 3DS would be NintendoWiki, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would be SmashWiki, and so forth. Super Mario RPG (talk) 12:19, May 27, 2024 (EDT)
Is it really you?
Are you... the actual real Mario?!! Ohhh... I am sooo... honored. If you could answer one question for me: How bad does it hurt when you fall into lava? I was told that it wasn't fun, and I've seen you do it a lot. What's it like? :-P I'm just teasing you; good block on that IP user, by the way. Until our paths cross again... Too-da-loo! - It hurts quite bad but most of it is concentrated on my, uh, rear (think about sitting on a hot stove briefly) so all you need is an ice pack to heal! It would be super duper bad if the rest of my body was affected by lava! I WILL tell Luigi to say hello! And I'll tell him to watch his sitting, he has a tendency to upset Spinies while he's sitting... Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 21:58, June 1, 2024 (EDT)
History splits
I think splitting content into history page could have another guideline other than the 150,000+ byte limit if there is enough miscellaneous sections like general information. One example is that if you look at the Barrel page, the types of barrels and other non-game information is located all the way below and not easy for accessibility. What do you think? Super Mario RPG (talk) 17:02, June 4, 2024 (EDT)
- It's probably part of a broader issue of article bloat, but in Barrel's case, I don't think we should have a full blown section of types of barrels. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 20:28, June 6, 2024 (EDT)
"Important!" talk page notice
I was browsing through user pages to get some inspiration for my own, and I came across your "Important!" notice on your user page. I really like the look and concept, so I would like to ask permission from you to put a similar notice on my own talk page using your template as a base. Ban evasion through Discord?
I don't think this is specifically mentioned in policy, but if a banned user is asking other people to make edits and revisions to the wiki for them through our Discord, are they circumventing their ban? I didn't feel comfortable mentioning this through Discord, but I feel like that is what StarMuffinABC/Analissa10 has been doing. Regardless of the types of revisions they are asking for and how kindly they are doing it, I don't think it's appropriate behavior. What do you think? - Nintendo101 (talk) 20:13, June 16, 2024 (EDT)
- I feel it qualifies as a low-key way to skirt a ban. Defeats the point of this. This user was given many many many chances to follow the rules, only for them to act belligerent and try to defy the actions taken, while trying to lie about this situation (they denied having sockpuppetted despite evidence we have gathered) thus losing trust as an editor. I would recommend they stop making edit requests to honor this block. That being said, I'm not a Discord mod, but I can bring up particular issues with other staff, so I'll gather opinion on this. Thank you. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 21:40, June 16, 2024 (EDT)
- Thanks. It was not apparent to me which avenue to go through or who to mention this to, but I know you have been privy to their behavior on the Discord.

Mario's Best Friend in Animal Crossing
Building on your question about Toadsworth, if Mario started a new Animal Crossing game, which villager would he want to become best friends with?
Dr. Baskerville 22:23, June 19, 2024 (EDT)
- I'm pretty sure Mario would want to just be best friends with everyone, but I suppose the easiest ones he'd befriend as lazy, normal, and peppy villagers (less likely with Snooty, Smug, and Cranky). I'm sure he'd praise Alfonzo's fashion sense as well as Louie's. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 16:12, June 23, 2024 (EDT)
Zelda proposal redux
I could use your help with retooling this proposal, please. I think I was overly ambitious and trying to provide a solution that would be inclusive of every possible outcome but that I should instead more narrowly tailor the options to outcomes I would directly support (plus the do nothing outcome). There was also some information I overlooked that made some of the options moot, chiefly creating a page that already exists. Do I need to wait the requisite four weeks before starting a new proposal, or is that rule null when the proposer cancelled the proposal?
Additionally, I created a page for MarioWiki:Proposals/Archive/68 because 67 had 20 proposals, which seems to be the cut off point for creating a new page. I was not, however, able to figure out how to add the links to the previous proposals that are seen on the other proposal archive pages.

- Hey, is there any updates regarding this? I think there's a new proposal in its place that more clearly set out the goals. "Standardize the coverage of elements from guest appearance titles"? Nevertheless I would allow a few options first because from experience, too many of these can overwhelm viewers and they wind up not really voting. If you need to find out ways to narrow down your options, perhaps shoot a more open-ended talk page discussion regarding these rather than a proposal. Mario-HOHO! Sprite galleries
I agree that should have a proposal for galleries with images not at a relatively consistent resolution already, actually, I was mainly just experimenting to see how it'd look. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 11:42, July 12, 2024 (EDT)
feedback
What's your opinion on the talk page I've started here? I've come to realize that some of the remake pages make it hard to see what's actually new to the games and what isn't. Super Mario RPG (talk) 10:57, July 23, 2024 (EDT)
- I would exercise individual discretion regarding the content of these pages, per response on the talk page there. Supposing you use Super Mario Bros. Deluxe as an example, if you really believe the article doesn't have sufficient information on the game itself, then verify the information through watching gameplay or playing the game yourself; then you'll probably have a good idea of how much repetitive information can be omitted from the page. For instance, if Super Mario Bros. Deluxe has practically the same levels and physics and whatnot as Super Mario Bros., I don't see the reason to devote a section that's practically the same as the section as in the original Super Mario Bros.. Wario of the Day
As a congratulatory implementation of the implementation of the "Thanks" proposal, you will receive an Official Wario of the Day. If you accumulate 5 official Warios of the day, your Wario will be Luigi'd from editing for a Donkey Kong's tie amount of days. If you delete your official Wario of the day, you will get another one, plus an unofficial Wario of the week. Also, black holes are deliciously awesome if you refrigerate the allegro in their brutal desire to execute extremely lame oranges of the Manatee Nebula.

Leaving the Super Mario Wiki
Hello Mario, so it turns out that I am not having a good time in this Wiki, so that means that I want to stop editing here, the reason Y I want to leave is because I really do not like this Wiki's UI. I really hate how the search bar for searching up pages is located at the left side of the screen in the sidebar, rather than in the top-right of the screen underneath the user's HUD area. Also, I really do not like how browsing this Wiki anonymously has advertisements whereas logged-in users do not have any advertisements, well unless if you use an adblocker, but Y they set it up like this, beats me. I really do not like how most of the articles in this Wiki has so much information that needs to be improved, like the proper nouns in lowercase (e.g. "penguin suit" instead of "Penguin Suit"), or words that stand for a different word (e.g. "Hammer Bros" instead of "Hammer Bros."). As an example, writing "Hammer Bros" without the full stop or period after it, users reading the article might not mean that it is a word standing for something else, the reason Y it needs to be "Bros." is because "Bros." stands for "Brothers". Also in the Hammer Bro page, one of the first paragraphs read that Hammer Bros. are sometimes formatted with a full stop in older material, this is completely wrong, Hammer Bros. are always formatted with periods regardless of the video game, in retro Mario games, like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, etc. they are formatted as "Brothers" instead of "Bros." Also, most of my contributions are not really editing the Wiki's articles, I created two user-sub pages, one for the Nintendo Switch and one for the Mii costumes in Super Mario Maker 2. Since I do not have permission to delete pages, they are stuck here forever, it is really bothering us that we have these two pages, we should have not created them. Another thing about my contributions is we registered our account in early 2022, with most of our edits being vandalizing many Wiki pages, like various typos, unclear information, etc. We then stopped editing for about 3 months, then came back in June of 2022, with similar edits until July 1, 2022. We then left this Wiki for over a full year until October of 2023, with not very good edits, but better ones than 2022, also I really do not like how we always captioned our edits, most of our edits now are just blank edit captions. It has been a full year after the return, it is not October of 2024, I really want to stop editing here due to what we said, also, I really do not like our username (C11P), the reason is because it is just random characters on the keyboard, I want to also leave because of this. The only way I can leave this Wiki is if I get blocked indefinitely, I really want to stop editing here because of what we said to you and also get blocked indefinitely from you. I bid you farewell, Mario and Users. C11P (talk • contributions) 08:00, October 1, 2024 (EDT)
- I'm not sure why this message was dropped on the page. This is a very late response. I was meaning to respond but just forgot about it. I haven't interacted with you much on the wiki, so I don't know your overall complaints, but a lot aren't very valid, if I'm being honest? The UI can be changed in your preferences. Ads on the wiki are by design, and it's to encourage users to create an account so they don't see ads. Also, the wiki is an ongoing and perpetual work in process, so flaws in styling, grammar, spelling, and so on are inevitable. While you do not have permission to delete pages, you will need a sysop to help delete them, or get a community consensus; this is set up this way to prevent abuse otherwise. You can restore these pages too, so as long as the information itself is in the server. This is also helpful in case deletions are accidental; not many changes in the wiki are destructive. If you really want to leave it's really up to you, you aren't forced to edit here. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 16:34, October 18, 2024 (EDT)
Super Mario Party Jamboree Datamine
Hello. I saw that you added the datamine references for the foreign names of the Sandwiched minigame from Super Mario Party Jamboree. I was wondering what tool I should use to extract and view the text strings of the languages in this game like you did. Thanks. --GDias (talk) 13:30, October 20, 2024 (EDT)
- Hi, thanks for asking. This is an involved multistep process and I don't know if you're familiar with general file management in the computer and whatnot, but I'll do a summary in the quickest way I can.
- First you'll need to find a rom of this game. You can dump it yourself which people will walk you through it since it's probably legal. There are other ways people get it, though some, certainly illegal, ways (torrent files, QBittorent is popular) need a VPN (paid is better) to mask an IP and prevent future legal trolling from an ISP, other ways (direct download) people don't need it. These people make sure they have a good adblocker, paramount.
- Once you get a ROM, you will need the latest
prod.keys
andtitle.keys
to decrypt your rom (usually in either nsp or xci). These are the keys you need for the emulator to run btw, but there are other ways to use these keys to extract files (hactool). Again you get keys usually from dumping from a Switch (don't share these online) buuuuut again some people get keys through other ways, figure that out. I find it easiest to extract files from an emulator, such as Ryujinx, as it's just a GUI involving few buttons (you DO need to set up the emulator; put your keys files inAppData\Roaming\Ryujinx\system
) but hactool does do the work, it's just all in command line so maybe you're good with command line instead. - Once you finally outputted a data partition, you can use Switch Toolbox to open these. You'll find all names in all available versions of the game in files starting with
message
. Due to the naming schemes of the files of minigames being rather cryptic, being denoted by numbers, it's best to first check the English name of the minigame. - Open
message~enUS.nx.bea
, open the folders inside this archive, findim_mg.msbt
("mg" is abbreviated for "minigame" in the file partition typically). You'll see a list of minigames under generic names. The first one isim_mg0101_name
and it corresponds toLumber Tumble
. This name "im_mg0101" is found in the other languages, so if you openmessage~frCA.nx.bea
(frCA = French Canadian) in the same manner and look for that sameim_mg.msbt
, check the field forim_mg0101
which will be Canadian French for Lumber Tumble (Pont en déconstruction).
- Now, I don't want you to scare you away with this, and I could offer more detailed explanations how I got there (that'll really bog down the process), but if you're willing to get your gloves a little dirty, this is definitely rewarding. It really opens up a lot of other opportunities, like you can decompile other Switch games and find their foreign names, or you can extract sprites and models, even animations to go with the models (the reason I uploaded some Super Mario Bros. Wonder renders).
- By the way, I don't think it's legal for me to just provide the
im_mg.msbt
for each corresponding language file due to the file format being proprietary but maybe there are ways to convert msbt into a readable table. I did manage to extract one msbt to a csv file, readable by spreadsheet applications such as Excel and LibreOffice. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 16:33, October 20, 2024 (EDT)- Update: Good news, I've converted these files to a more readable csv format, so if anyone is interested, check the official server in MarioWiki:Discord servers. Plans
I thought through carefully about some of the things I'd like to continue doing. One of them is still updating the citations as necessary. Another is making sure gallery pages aren't too short, otherwise they'd need re-merge. Some of the "History of" articles need to be readded still, if they're under 150,000 bytes. I want to revise like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, since I have a feeling some of the older games has writing that needs to be updated. Super Mario RPG (talk) 17:54, October 21, 2024 (EDT)
Images
From what I could tell, most people were in support of icons staying that way (I'm far from the only person who uploads them in that manner), and that much was stated in at least a few of the opposition votes - that some should be at their native dimensions, but not all, and not none. Calling that consistent data "utter bullshit" I do not appreciate. The reminder was less for the reversion and more the wordlessness of it, as it ultimately came off as "I'm too important to engage in any way, let alone listen to any reasons or give any counterpoints," as that is indeed edit warring to force a change in one fell swoop on 55 images that has not been discussed and goes against how we deal with that sort of image historically. Anyways, if there is going to be debate on what has been an unofficial rule for years now, I've made a different proposal that is more aligned with this specific issue. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:53, October 28, 2024 (EDT)
- While Mario's curt words may have been harsh, it came out of sincere frustration from what staff saw as very discourteous actions from you.
- From the perspective of staff, it seemed like you abandoned a proposal that was not going in the direction you wanted to (which was perfectly fine for you to do) and then imposed your interpretation onto the actions of a fellow user anyways, citing "unwritten rule" that are absolutely not followed by everyone involved with assets on the site. I do not want to put words in Mario's mouth, but I at least thought that was 100% not okay and was discourteous to everyone who shared their perspective in that proposal (including Mario and Ray Trace, who are sprite and asset rippers themselves). You are one of the most active users on the wiki. You must have known that that was not okay. - Nintendo101 (talk) 18:42, October 28, 2024 (EDT)
- It's also not OK to revert a change (on 55 pages with a single fell swoop upload!) without even an attempt at contact. That's where the "edit warring" came into play, and TBF was far more discourteous, as it came off as an "I'm too important to engage". Given another user also was reverting their icon crops for a different game for the exact same reasons at the same time, it seemed perfectly fine. And you yourself said there was a place for keeping the full parameters when it was to the wiki's benefit on that proposal. Had that user at least left me a message on that subject or added a summary, then I'd have probably let it be. But they didn't, and that just comes off as incredibly dismissive. So you should understand that I too was feeling frustrated about that. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 18:47, October 28, 2024 (EDT)
My proposal
You... do realize the current proposal explicitly does not require the native dimensions, right? Because your comments and arguments were still revolving around it doing so. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:09, October 31, 2024 (EDT)
- Yes I do realize. I had to make major changes to my first comment after rereading your proposal. After that, that's not my argument. Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 02:11, October 31, 2024 (EDT)

The citations in the intro section of the KONG Letters page made it a slog to edit, so I attempted to clean it up using a different system for citing sources. Is this okey-dokey, or does it add other problems that make the previous code preferrable? -- KOOPA CON CARNE 06:41, November 12, 2024 (EST)
- Is there a way to cite the particular page number when the same source is cited multiple times? Mario-HOHO! (Talk / Stalk) 21:17, November 12, 2024 (EST)
- I looked up some time ago how official American style guides do it and found this (studyhood.com, section "ORDER OF ELEMENTS FOR A BOOK REFERENCE" (2nd)) for MLA and this (libguides.up.edu) for Chicago Manual of Style. To synthetize what both these guides recommend: the first time a source is cited, list the rigmarole that you normally would (author last name, author first name, publication date, title, publisher etc.); if the document then requires that you cite a different page from the same source, use a shortened form that contains the bare necessities.
The two style guides may prioritize different such "bare necessities" for shortform citations. MLA dictates that you should use the author's last name and the relevant page if you source only one work by that author, and additionally list a shortened form of the work's title if you cite multiple works by that author on the same document. Chicago, on the other hand, dictates that you always use the author's last name, title of work (again, a short form!), and page name even if you only cite one work by that author.
Shortform citations help cut down on redundant information. Their usefulness has already led me to integrate this brand of citations in articles. However, since the wiki doesn't strictly follow an official style guide (especially concerning citations), I've been taking the liberty of always writing the work's entire title rather than resorting to a self-created variant of that title, which IMO falls in line with the wiki's general stance on conjectural names. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 18:26, November 13, 2024 (EST)
