Gloomy Galleon is the fourth level in Donkey Kong 64. It is a water-based cove area featuring King K. Rool's sunken galleon. The stage has a mild pirate theme with both underwater and cave-like areas.[1] Players have to use Lanky Kong to defeat the area's boss, which is Puftoss. Gloomy Galleon is an eerie cove that is full of caverns, which hold many secret treasures and shipwrecks from earlier Donkey Kong games. Outside these caves are water areas towered over by cliffs. There is a lighthouse area that has a switch in order to raise or lower the area's water level. This area also has a floating ship that appears to be owned by K. Rool. There is also a hidden Mermaid Village beneath the waters and many treasure chests. The other water area is a cove with many sunken objects. This holds the sunken Gangplank Galleon, which is ripped in half and holds secret Golden Bananas. There is also a hidden mechanical fish here and a cove where the player must race the Seal. Gloomy Galleon has an animal crate that Lanky Kong can enter to transform into Enguarde.
Geography[edit]
Starting Cave[edit]
This is the cave between the two lakes and also the entrance to the level. There is a flooded cave off to the side primarily for Chunky, which contains a cannonball which Chunky has to carry to a cannon. A bit further in is a 4-way split path; coming from the entrance the path left leads to the Sunken Ship Lake, the path right to the Lighthouse Lake and the center path to the Central Cave Area. The path towards the Sunken Ship Lake contains two switches, one for Tiny, the other for Lanky which is also guarded by a Kosha.
Central Cave Area[edit]
A bigger area within the Starting Cave. It includes two broken and stranded ships, both have a cannon in front of them to land on top of them. At the entrance to the room is a Bananaporter Pad 1, with the Pad 2 right next to it on a metal box. The broken ship near the two Pads can be walked through to reach an off to the side room with three treasure chests for Chunky to break open. Above said ship are a couple vines that can be used to swing to a higher-up area with a bunch of planks, Bananaporter Pad 3 and Tiny's Kasplat can be found up here. The other stranded ship further back has the Battle Pad inside it and Cranky's Lab at the top of it.
Sunken Ship Lake[edit]
This is one of the two lakes of this level. It has a big sunken ship in the center of the lake with 4 numbered gates at the sides and another with a Enguarde Box next to it at the top. There are 3 distinct smaller areas off to the side, plus the Treasure Cave that can be reached through a tunnel. One of the smaller areas features another sunken ship, however a smaller one that sunk vertically and is half buried in the ground, it features two gates. Near the half buried ship there's a floating wooden plank on the water surface with the Bananaporter Pad 2. More floating planks can be found in the area at the other side of the lake, this time with the Pad 5 and Funky's Store. Underwater is a sunken and mostly buried submarine. Right next to it, closer to the surface is a cactus with 4 different Music Pads on each of the 4 branches. The area next to this featured the Bananaporter Pad 4 and Candy's Music Shop on floating planks with a gate at the bottom of the lake, a mechanical fish will swim out of the gate when Diddy activates his Music Pad in the Lighthouse Lake.
Treasure Cave[edit]
Can be accessed from the center of the Sunken Ship Lake through a tunnel with a green-ish color. Right before the Treasure Cave is a gate with Enguardes face on it that will only dissappear if Enguarde jumps through the DK Stars above the Sunken Ship Lake 3 times. The cave features 2 big pile of coins on the sides that have to be climbed with two of the Kongs. If Diddy climbes his pile of coins and gets the Golden Banana at the top of it a Bananaporter Pad 4 will spawn to allow for Donkey to defeat the Kasplat on it. Between the two piles is a big treasure chest that can be entered with Tiny in Mini-Monkey form, inside it are five submerged piles of coins with Oyster's on it guarding the Pearls that the Mermaid requested in the Lighthouse Lake.
Lighthouse Lake[edit]
The other lake of the level, this one is round, has a big lighthouse in the center and a gigantic door spanning the entire height of the level. Below the lighthouse is a deep but slim pillar holding up the lighthouse and a small island around it, on said pillar are two switches on opposite sides, one with a green arrow pointing upwards, the other red and pointing downwards; they raise and lower the water respectively. On the small island surrounding the lighthouse are two Bananaporter Pads, 1 and 5. The lighthouse itself can be entered with Donkey and is only a single tall room that can be climbed, at the top of it is a lever that activates the lighthouse. Only if the lighthouse is activated will a big ship with K Rool's face on its sails float around the lighthouse, it can be jumped on and entered with Chunky. Above the surface of the water is a cage containing the Seal, that can be opened by Donkey. On the surface of the lake are two alcoves, one of which contains Diddy's Kasplat, the other contains Snide's H.Q. and the Bananaporter Pad 3. On the seabed is a giant shell that can be entered with Tiny, inside is a Mermaid asking for the 5 missing pearls that can be found in the Treasure Cave. There are 5 different treasure chests scattered throughout the lake underwater, an Enguarde Box is found on the highest seabed.

Golden Bananas[edit]
Donkey Kong[edit]
Image | Description | Type |
---|---|---|
Use the Bongo Blast pad on the cactus near Funky's Store in the Sunken Ship Lake. Swim towards the big sunken ship in the center of the lake and enter the gate #3 (which is to the right at the back, when swimming from the cactus) within 60 seconds. The Bonus Barrel can be found in a cage with an opening. | Krazy Kong Klamour! | |
Access to the Treasure Cave is required, it can be unlocked by jumping through the DK Stars above the Sunken Ship Lake using Enguarde. Then climb the pile of gold coins with Diddy Kong using the Simian Spring pads to reach the Bonus Barrel. Once the Golden Banana from the Bonus Barrel has been gotten a Bananaporter #4 will unlock. Use the other Bananaporter #4 near the cave exit on the Sunken Ship Lake, the yellow Kasplat can be found on the pile of coins. Defeat the yellow Kasplat and give their blueprint to Snide. |
||
If the water level isn't high already, then use Enguarde with Lanky Kong and hit the green arrow in the pillar underwater below the lighthouse to raise the water. Hop on the platform in the center and hit the Donkey Kong switch on the ground in front of the lighthouse. Enter the lighthouse and climb to the top of it to flip the switch. A Golden Banana will appear at the entrance inside the lighthouse. The raised water & the newly appeared ship gives access to more Golden Bananas (though the raised water also blocks some Golden Banana's, so it may have to be undone). |
||
Use the Baboon Blast pad around the lighthouse (requires the water level to be high or both Bananaporter #1 or #5 to be unlocked) and complete the Barrel Cannon course. The Seal will be freed and wait for you near Candy's Music Shop in the Sunken Ship Lake. Talk to the Seal with Donkey Kong to receive a Golden Banana. | ||
Requires the previous Golden Banana. Requires the water level to be high. Jump into the hole in the wall near Candy's Music Shop in the Sunken Ship Lake. Win the race against the Seal while collecting at least 10 coins to get another Golden Banana. |
Diddy Kong[edit]

In an alcove on the Lighthouse Lake. Defeat the red Kasplat and give their blueprint to Snide. Requires the water level to be low. |
||
Use the Rocketbarrel Boost barrel around the lighthouse (requires the water level to be high or both Bananaporter #1 or #5 to be unlocked), use it and fly to the top of the lighthouse to use the Guitar Gazump pad on it. Then, swim towards the big, mechanical fish that appeared in the Sunken Ship Lake (use Bananaporter #5 as a shortcut) within 94 seconds. Once inside, use the Peanut Popguns to shoot the 3 targets on the heart 3 times each. | ||
Requires the lighthouse to be activated (see Donkey Kong's Golden Bananas). Jump aboard the ship on the Lighthouse Lake (this is easier when using the Rocketbarrel Boost barrel around the lighthouse). A Golden Banana will appear atop the lighthouse, use the Rocketbarrel Boost ability to reach it. |
Lanky Kong[edit]

In the flooded room with a cannonball near the entrance of the level. Defeat the blue Kasplat and give their blueprint to Snide. Requires the water level to be high. | ||
Jump through the DK Stars above the Sunken Ship Lake with Enguarde (easier with raised water). Climb the pile of gold coins inside the Treasure Cave using the Baboon Balloon pads. | Searchlight Seek! | |
Hit the Lanky Kong switch in the Starting Cave close to the Shunken Ship Lake. Then, swim into the Sunken Ship Lake and reach the half-buried sunken ship within 30 seconds. Once inside, use Enguarde to destroy the treasure chests to open up a hidden path behind one of the them that leads to the Golden Banana. | ||
Use the Trombone Tremor pad on the cactus near Funky's Store in the Sunken Ship Lake. Swim towards the big sunken ship in the center of the lake and enter the gate #4 (which is to the left at the front, when swimming from the cactus) within 60 seconds. The Golden Banana can be found on the bed. Requires the water level to be low. |

From the Central Cave Area with Cranky's Lab, go through the stranded, broken ship to reach three treasure chests. Open the treasure chests with a Primate Punch, the one on the very right contains a Golden Banana. | ||
Requires the water level to be high. Near the entrance of the level, open the gate by hitting the pineapple switches. Once the gate has been open, go inside and carry the cannonball to the cannon (it's suggested to defeat the blue Kasplat first). Hit all three targets within 40 seconds and a maximum of 6 shots to receive a Golden Banana. If the task is failed Chunky Kong will have to carry the cannonball back to the cannon to retry. |
||
On the cactus near Funky's Store in the Sunken Ship Lake. Defeat the green Kasplat and give their blueprint to Snide. | ||
Use the Triangle Trample pad in the alcove on the Lighthouse Lake, it will open a gate on the big sunken ship in the center of the Sunken Ship Lake. Reach it within 60 seconds, the Bonus Barrel can be found inside in a corner. Requires the water level to be low. | Batty Barrel Bandit! | |
Requires the lighthouse to be activated (see Donkey Kong's Golden Bananas). Jump aboard the ship on the Lighthouse Lake (this is easier if the water level is low, in which case the Bananaporter #1 or #5 can be used to reach the lighthouse) and Simian Slam a broken panel on the floor near the back of the ship to enter it. Go towards the back of the area and break the gate using a Primate Punch. Hit the orange side of the balls that have Chunky Kong's face on it with a Primate Punch. Once all 5 balls are destroyed a Golden Banana will appear. |

Donkey Kong 64[edit]
- Instruction booklet bio from Cranky Kong (page 20): Prepare to get your flea-ridden fur wet as you dive down into the murky depths of the reptilian lagoons. You won't be the only thing down there though, as the gloomy, rotting remains of the King's once proud armada lie waiting to be explored - truly an enlightening experience. Elsewhere, you'll find a hulking structure that's a bit dim and doesn't work. Yes, I know you already know about Chunky, but this is also true of an eerie lighthouse. Let's see if you can get them both working and be of some use.
- Player's Guide (page 61): Deep in a forgotten cove, a darkened lighthouse presides over still waters. Kremlings lurk in shipwrecked galleys, the shattered hulls breached on beaches and wallowing in murky depths. Take a deep breath...
- United Kingdom Nintendo Magazine System vol. 86 (page 14): You've gotta fight your way through King K. Rool's fleet of wrecked ships. Turn into Enguarde by bashing open the animal crate to get the treasures below.

Trivia[edit]
- Inside the sunken ship, many pictures of Kaptain K. Rool are found. Also in Lanky Kong's shipwreck room, the carpet has the same logo of the Kremling Krew emblem. A book on the desk of this area says "Captain K. Rool's Log Book," ignoring the misspelling in the word "Kaptain."
- Although the bow and midsegment of the Gangplank Galleon are clearly visible, the stern, however, is nowhere to be found. It is possible that the floating and sunken pieces of the shipwreck were once the stern.
- The level's theme is a reworking of what was originally going to be Captain Blackeye's theme in Project Dream, the game that eventually became Banjo-Kazooie. An alternate version closely resembling the version heard in Donkey Kong 64 is titled "High Tides, Swift Sails."[2]
- This is the only level to have Tag Barrels underwater and the Tag Barrel's screen to be overlayed with blue and the music and sound stifled due to being underwater.
- While inside the floating ship in the lighthouse area, one of the themes from Jungle Japes plays, despite the ship being located in Gloomy Galleon.
- One of Chunky's Banana Balloons is glitched in this level. The Balloon is meant to appear above the shipwreck that only Tiny and Lanky can enter and be shot from the nearby #2 Bananaporter; however, a draw distance bug does not load the balloon into the game until Chunky swims to where the shipwreck is, then swims back.
- There are 3 Banana Coins for Chunky that were meant to be placed in an underwater treasure chest that can be broken by Enguarde, but they spawn below the floor of the level. These coins can be collected by performing the swim through vertical walls glitch to go out of bounds.[3]
- There is an invisible 101st banana for Tiny that can be found in the sunken ship. It can be obtained by performing the swim through vertical walls glitch to go out of bounds.[4] The game will not register the 101st banana in the totals unless Tiny has fed at least 1 banana to Scoff.
