Template talk:Fandom
One thing
Can we keep this template? Woodchuck (talk) 10:49, 16 May 2017 (EDT)
Assuming this template isn't also lifted from another wiki, I think it can stay: . I feel that linking to wikia should be acceptable for non-videogame subject matter as well as third-party games not associated with Nintendo. Infact, we already have a wikia pipe markup that works like the old stuff methods and it's used on quite a few pages.
However the examples on the page should be changed to non-NIWA examples, and it should be stressed that we will prioritize linking to NIWA wikis as well as any other indie wiki on any other subject matters. If we pipe a link to "Optimus Prime", it should link to tfwiki dot net instead of the wikia, for example. --Glowsquid (talk) 11:08, 16 May 2017 (EDT)
Broken
None of the links seem to be working. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 21:05, 26 October 2018 (EDT)
- That's because most of the community links now go to fandom.com now instead of wikia.com. Not every single community has been moved to the fandom domain name, but around 600 English wikis have moved there. – Owencrazyboy9 (talk) 21:52, 26 October 2018 (EDT)

Move "Wikia" to "Fandom"
Template:SettledTPP Template:ProposalOutcome Fandom launched in 2016 and Wikia was fully phasing out from 2018 to 2021. I was wondering if we could move the template "Wikia" to "Fandom".

Support
- GuntherBB (talk) Per proposal
- Arend (talk) I mean, the name "Wikia" has fallen out of use ever since it was renamed to FANDOM, so it makes sense. If there's an opposition to keep the template name, at least make Template:Fandom a redirect?
- RealStuffMister (talk) per proposal.
- Camwoodstock (talk) In the perfect world, the Wikia template would not need to exist as everyone would be able to easily bail on FANDOM's terrible management to have independent wikis. ...Until that day arrives, though, we can probably bear to update the template's name to be more reflective of the site's name post-rebranding. The most tedious part would simply be setting up a wiki bot to convert the templates, no joke.
Oppose
- PnnyCrygr (talk) Wikia is the more known name for such fan wikis, so we will retain the Wikia name. Besides, wouldn't moving the template create countless red links? My opposition.
- SeanWheeler (talk) I never really agreed with the rebranding. They changed a name as unique as "Wikia" to a generic name FANDOM? Fandom is a synonym for fanbase. You can argue that we're a Mario fandom despite not being a part of that site. Bulbapedia had a Project FANDOM long before Wikia rebranded themselves. Meanwhile, Wikia while not being use so much anymore is still a term exclusive to them, and has the word "wiki" in it to explain that it's a wiki farm.
#LinkTheLefty (talk) I don't really see the point with changing wiki-code over this; the
current name is more concise/specific and, in my experience, Fandom wikis are still colloquially known as wikias.
Comments
@PnnyCrygr: Moving a page will result in the old name automatically becoming a redirect to the new name, so by default, moving a page does not create countless of red links. While it is possible for certain user groups (e.g. patrollers and administrators) to choose to not create a redirect from the old name when moving a page, regular users don't have that choice, so when they move a page, it'll never cause lots of red links.
Also, Fandom hasn't called any of the Wikis they host "Wikias" in a long time anymore, and yo be honest, I haven't seen the name "Wikia" for a while either. I won't say that no one uses that name anymore, but it's a bit of an artifact in the current day. rend (talk) (edits) 13:09, May 6, 2023 (EDT)
- Also, there's a bot on the wiki that can automatically replace a given string of characters. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 13:27, May 6, 2023 (EDT)
Decide whether to add the language parameter and/or change back to the interwiki link template

I just saw that the <page/text>
interwiki link has been fixed. That way, editors of the Super Mario Wiki who are also Fandom users will no longer be taken to the "Not a valid community" message, instead going to a page within a Fandom community. This time, you might be wondering whether or not how the template can be changed back to the interwiki template. There are four of the following options to choose from:
# | Description | Skeleton | Example | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Code | Link | |||
1 | Change back to the interwiki link AND add the language parameter. | }}}|{l}.}}|{}:{}|{{{3|{}}}}
|
spongebob
|
Bikini Bottom |
spongebob
|
SpongeBob | |||

|
Stephen Hillenburg | |||
2 | ONLY change back to interwiki link. | }}}|{l}.}}|{}:{}|{{{3|{}}}}
|
spongebob
|
Bikini Bottom |
spongebob
|
SpongeBob | |||
3 | ONLY add the language parameter. | <span class="plainlinks">{{{3|{}}}}</span>
|

|
Stephen Hillenburg |
4 | Do NOTHING. | <span class="plainlinks">{{{3|{}}}}</span>
|
spongebob
|
Bikini Bottom |
spongebob
|
SpongeBob |

Option #1
Option #2
Option #3
Option #4

Just saying, but the skeleton for Option #2 appears to be exactly the same as that of Option #1. I don't think that's supposed to be the case.
Also, Options #1 and #3 appear to show completely different Spanish SpongeBob wikis for the Stephen Hillenburg page, for some reason...? rend (talk) (edits) 15:16, March 9, 2024 (EST)
I added the language param (that doesn't need a proposal, you can just ask for that). Regarding switching back to interwiki: FANDOM broke their redirect system in the past, and we have no way of knowing if and when it will break again in the future, so I think using the URL is the more stable solution. --Steve (talk) 15:38, March 9, 2024 (EST)
- I made a request to merge from Bob Esponja Wiki to Wiki Bob Esponja. By the way, if you know how to fix the FANDOM interwiki link, then maybe you should fix the URL for the interwiki link to wikia:c:<l>.<wiki> to https://<wiki>.fandom.com/<l>; for example, you should change the URL for the wikia:c:es.spongebob:Stephen Hillenburg to https://spongebob.fandom.com/es/wiki/Stephen_Hillenburg. Thanks! --GuntherBayBeee 16:57, March 9, 2024 (EST)
- The URL that the interwiki link generates is this:
https://community.fandom.com/wiki/c:es.spongebob:Stephen_Hillenburg
. It's totally up to FANDOM which wiki that URL redirects to. Constructing the URL manually allows us to actually choose between bobesponja vs. spongebob/es. --Steve (talk) 17:48, March 9, 2024 (EST) - Wait, Gunther, are you saying that you requested for Bob Esponja to be merged TO SpongeBob/es?! But the former wiki is clearly much larger, more developed, and nicer looking than the latter! Shouldn't SpongeBob/es be the wiki that's to be merged to Bob Esponja instead?
Also I cannot access the URL of your request to Fandom; when I try to visit it, it instead says that the page doesn't exist.rend (talk) (edits) 19:42, March 9, 2024 (EST)
