Japan (Japanese: 日本; Rōmaji: Nihon or Nippon; Ainu: ニホン; Engrish: ジャパン) is an island country in Asia on Earth. It (specifically, Kyoto) is where Nintendo of Japan is located and where many games of the Super Mario franchise are developed. Japan also makes an appearance in NES Open Tournament Golf as one of the playable countries along with the United States of America and the United Kingdom. It also appears in Mario is Missing!, in which Luigi goes to Tokyo. The nation also appears in both Mario Kart Tour and the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe via the Tokyo Blur course.

Trivia
- In Super Mario Bros. 3 in Water Land, on the island where the castle is, the island is shaped like Japan. Also, the castle is located right where the Nintendo of Japan Headquarters in Kyoto would be if the island were really Japan.
- In the Japanese version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Question 3 in the 66th Annual Quirk Quiz has the choices "4本" (4 feet), "6本" (6 feet), "8本" (8 feet), and "日本," where "日本" looks similar to the previous choices that make sense but means Japan. Its English version is "4 feet, 6 feet, 8 feet, Defeat."
