These guys aren't so much carnivorous as Mario...nivorous. Ahem. There are lots of varieties, like Frost, Wild Ptooie, Ghost, Prickly, Dino, Bone, Elasto-Piranhas, Stalking, Naval... A helpful mnemonic is "Fireballs with Ground Pounds defeat baddies, even super nasties." | These carnivorous plants are hungry for one thing - Mario! There are all sorts of them, including the Naval Piranha, Fire Piranha Plant, Inky Piranha Plant, Piranha Creeper, Bone Piranha Plant, Stalking Piranha Plant... But all you need to know is "plants with teeth want to eat Mario". |
Blue indicates exclusive to the Wii U version.

Palutena's Guidance
(Note: Unlike other characters who were released as downloadable content, Piranha Plant has a unique conversation rather than having a generic conversation; this may be due to Piranha Plant being developed simultaneously with the base game.)
- Pit: Is that a...Piranha Plant?!
- Palutena: Not so loud. She'll hear you!
- Viridi: Did someone say Piranha Plant?
- Pit: Oh no.
- Viridi: I wrote my thesis on Piranha Plants! There are just so many species! You've got your basic Piranha Plants, your Fire Piranha Plants, [speech speeds up as she speaks] Ptooies, Nipper Plants, Nipper Spores, Munchers, Jumping Piranhas, Wild Ptooie Piranhas, Propeller Piranhas, Naval Piranhas, Chewies, Megasmilax, Piranha Pests, Piranha Sprouts, Frost Piranhas, Putrid Piranhas, Proto Piranhas, Piranhabons, Piranha Beans, Mom Piranhas, Small Piranhas, Elasto-Piranhas, Piranha Planets, Bungee Piranhas, Big Bungee Piranhas, Ghosts, Nipper Dandelions, Spiny Piranhas, Dino Piranhas, Fire Stalking Piranhas, Piranha Plorps, River Piranhas, Big Piranhas, Stalking Piranhas, Big Fire Piranhas, Prickly Piranhas, Peewee Piranhas, Inky Piranhas, Gold Piranhas, Bone Piranhas, Big Bone Piranhas, Piranha Pods, Piranha Creepers, Nipper Spore Patches, Paper Fire Piranhas, Poison Piranhas, Big Poison Piranhas, Upside-Down Piranhas, Petey Piranha, Paper Petey Piranha, Petea Piranha—
- Pit: Whoa!
- Viridi: I haven't even started on all the minor variations!
- Palutena: Enough, Viridi! I never want to hear the word "piranha" ever again.
- Pit: I guess that means I'm not getting any fighting tips. Thanks, Viridi.
Nintendo eShop description
- Piranha Plant joins the battle as a stand-alone fighter in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game! With its powerful bite, Poison Breath, and ability to call in Petey Piranha for a larger-than-life Final Smash, this fighter's ferocity is as sharp as it teeth. Ready your pipes and flowerpots; your opponent won't see you coming! (Then again, Piranha Plant doesn't really "see" either. It doesn't have eyes.)

Piranha Plant A plant monster with ferocious teeth. |
"Touching these plants will hurt you more than them. Perhaps attacking them foot-first is not the best idea." |
Dr. Mario World
- Stage mode: "Grants 5%/10%/15%/20%/25% chance viruses (2) will be eliminated on stage start."
- Versus mode: "If an object has reached the 3rd row from the bottom line, grants 20%/40%/60%/80%/100% chance all capsules will be eliminated. (Once only.)"
- Dr. Mario World Twitter: Yellow: "I was wondering if it wasn't getting enough water, but turns out it's sick. Huh? It's got nothing to do with water? The Help Piranha Plant! event lasts till Feb. 2, 9:59 PM PT. Go help the poor thing get better!"[1]
amiibo
- These vicious, plantlike baddies are from the Super Mario™ series and typically hide in pipes. They emerge with mouths open, awaiting victims. A poorly timed jump means a chomping—hence the "piranha" name. While there have been exceptions, they generally don't appear if Mario waits on top of or just next to a pipe. They hate fireballs.
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Nintendo Switch)
- Figure bio: "It's a Piranha Plant figure. What do they water these things with?"
