Hi
Why can't we ask for sysop powers? Also I have tagged some pages for deletion so will you please kindly delete it? Thx Kaptain K. Rool
- Because I'm sure a lot of people want to be a sysop, and the administration has better things to do than field all those requests. Being a good user gets you there; it's not something that you ask for and then receive. Also the images will be taken care of at some point; you don't need to notify me about them. --Steve (talk) 16:21, 28 February 2011 (EST)
- My apologies sir. I am just wondering why we can't ask. Even if I want to be one. I wont ask so I will work for it even if it will take like 2-3 years... Kaptain K. Rool
- Why don't we have many sysops on here even if users such as BabyLuigiOnFire are good-faith users? That doesn't make much sense to me >-<. When will my sysop privilige time come? Kaptain K. Rool
- You're looking at it backwards. We don't make all good users sysops. Instead, when we decide to add a sysop, we choose a good user. Becoming a sysop is not something you should be concerned about at all. Your time may never come because you're already thinking about it too much. --Steve (talk) 20:58, 4 March 2011 (EST)
- OK then I'll wait for the time.... Kaptain K. Rool

Sitenotice suggestion
You can put "Did you know?" facts, "Mario & Nintendo News", latest proposals, featured articles, etc. with random template. Also, to make it easier, link a template from MediaWiki:Sitenotice (like Sitenotice). SWFlash
- I hope the content will be more specific than main page stuff or random stuff. Can you explain how editing a template is easier than editing a MediaWiki page? I don't follow. --Steve (talk) 12:55, 8 March 2011 (EST)
- MediaWiki: Only sysops can edit it. Template: You can choose who can edit it. I've suggested the random stuff because there's barely anything to put in the sitenotice. SWFlash

Spam filter on Pikmin Fanon
Can you unblock all of the "blacklisted" words on Pikmin Fanon? It turns out some of them are on valid pages (such as your talk page) and they are inaccessible now. Also, we are trying a different method now, so it won't affect the spam that much. Volatile Dweevil

Why did you make this redirect? It seems useless because Nintendo didn't make any sequels in a while (since 2009, or 2007 for numberstream). They've released 3DS and they will more likely make a sequel for 3DS rather than Wii (and it will maybe then named Mario Party 3DS, rather than Mario Party 9). SWFlash
- I guess I made it so if one searches MP9 they see the list of games to confirm there is no MP9 rather than getting the search results for MP9 which is really just a mess. --Steve (talk) 16:39, 16 March 2011 (EDT)
Contribution Scores
Hi Steve; sorry to bug you with this. I recently just discovered the contribution scores page (yeah, it took me a while) and I realized that it's hard to find out what "position" you're in. If you're right in the middle of the table in, say, 25th, you have to count either down from 50 or up from 1 on the boxes to find out what specific "position" you're in. Is it at all possible that we could add numbers to the side to tell us that? Idk if that's possible or not; no biggie if it isn't. Thanks Steve! Bowser's luma
File:contributionscores.png|500px
I was trying to say that it's hard to determine what number you are out of the top 50 and this would be a good idea to add. Of course, less crude and aligned with the table correctly, unlike mine. Bowser's luma
- It's just to give you an idea of where you stand; we're not so competitive that we need to be comparing ranks. --Steve (talk) 17:16, 17 March 2011 (EDT)

Question
Can you allow autoconfirmed users to edit others' userpages? I am asking because there are some images needed to be replaced and red links needed to be fixed. Thanks sir. Kaptain K. Rool
- It's a shame you're not a sysop or you could fix them. --Steve (talk) 10:15, 18 March 2011 (EDT)
- I know, but why only sysops? Users can fix red links too. BTW I did NOT sneak in to try to gain sysop powers. I was wondering if autoconfirmed users can do it as well. Kaptain K. Rool
- You would need to do a proposal on this. --Steve (talk) 10:21, 18 March 2011 (EDT)

Main page MW:About link?
Hi, I was wondering if I could add a link to MarioWiki:About on the main page, in the "Welcome to the Mario Wiki" section after the "Help" link? Here's a mock-up. It was suggested on my proposal about removing spoiler templates by Bop1996 as a compromise for the folks who think that putting the replacement spoiler disclaimer on MW:About (as I proposed) is too out-of-the-way, and would rather have a warning directly on the main page. Regardless of the proposal, I think having a link to MW:About would be a good idea, but I wanted to check with you first. - Walkazo 22:01, 25 March 2011 (EDT)
- I definitely don't want a spoiler warning on the main page. The About page really needs an entire rewrite. --Steve (talk) 02:34, 26 March 2011 (EDT)
- It should go without saying that the wiki contains spoilers. We're an encyclopedia. Wikipedia has this, and we'll have the warning on the About page. You'll note that Wikipedia doesn't have a warning on its main page. --Steve (talk) 14:39, 26 March 2011 (EDT)

Folding Box
Hey Steve, I've found and interesting feature from Bulbapedia and it's the feature to expand a box by passing the cursor over it. I should give the credit to the guy who made it, although I need a comment of yours if it's nice or not to implement in this wiki. I had to make within the MediaWiki:Common.css page because it's the only zone it works. ¢oincoll€ctor
- You could have added it to Monobook.css but where do you want to use it? --Steve (talk) 18:40, 2 April 2011 (EDT)
It could be used specially in the archives templates, like that of the proposals' archives. It may also serve to change the NIWA template of the main page and its extensive list of wikis. What do you think? ¢oincoll€ctor
Excellent. I'll try to take the code to the Monobook.css to see if it can work there. ¢oincoll€ctor
Wiki question
I have a question, if you wouldn't mind answering it...I was just wondering why wikis like this one or Wikipedia look so much different style-wise than like say The Banjo-Kazooie Wiki, or The Emperor's New Wiki, which seem to look distinctly different...
PHOENIX (talk • edits) 01:44, 3 April 2011 (EDT)
- Well, a wiki can be customized to look like anything. Not all blogs look the same, not all wikis look the same, etc. We use Monobook, Wikipedia uses Vector--both of these skins are part of the default MediaWiki package. Wikia uses its own custom skin to give their wikis that distinct look. --Steve (talk) 01:51, 3 April 2011 (EDT)
- Okay, that makes sense... :)
PHOENIX (talk • edits) 01:55, 3 April 2011 (EDT)

Cite
Could we get the latest version, please? I think some of its new features would be useful. - 2257(Talk) 11:11, 14 April 2011 (EDT)
- The ones I'm interested in are summarized under the "Grouped references" and "Separating references from text" headers. The former allows creation of multiple separated reference lists, which we could use to create footnotes (for example, on Badge). The latter allows the current kind of syntax, which looks like this:
- Mario is a character first appearing as the protagonist of the arcade game Donkey Kong released in 1981. Since Mario Bros., Mario has made numerous appearances as a main character in his own series of games, the Mario series, and has become the mascot of Nintendo.
- ==references==
- <references />
- ==references==
- to be replaced with this:
- Mario is a character first appearing as the protagonist of the arcade game Donkey Kong released in 1981. Since Mario Bros., Mario has made numerous appearances as a main character in his own series of games, the Mario series, and has become the mascot of Nintendo.
- ==references==
- <references>
-
- <references />
- ==references==
- I think that having the second style as an option would be useful. Often, I've noticed that newer users who don't understand precisely how references work will delete the main tag that contains the actual reference data, because they believe it or the fact it's attached to not to be relevant anymore. However, they leave one or more dependent tags on the page, which creates an ugly looking error message. I think the newer syntax will reduce the incidence of this.

Hey Porplemontage, it's Jake from Nookipedia. I've changed all pages that use the 'acwiki' interwiki link to reflect the new name 'nookipedia'. I just wanted to let you know that it's safe to drop the 'acwiki' row from the table if you'd like to. :) --staple720 14:07, 14 May 2011 (EDT)

Main Page
Hello Porplemontage
Plumber690 here. For some reason it won't let me edit the main page. How come you get to edit it? Explain why I cannot edit the main page. Some stuff could be said at E3 which will be very soon. --Plumber690 13:13, June 5, 2011 (UTC)
- Maybe because he's the creator and owner of the Wiki? Anyways, me being a jerk aside. The page is protected, so only Administrators can edit it. However, certain parts of the page can be edited here. But be careful, and read the rules before you do/write anything. And make sure your spell and grammar is correct. XzelionETC
Why
Why are they still ads when you are logged in.--New Super Yoshi 12:00, 5 June 2011 (EDT)
- They go away after you hit a certain number of edits (I'm not revealing the number, but it's not too high). This is to prevent people from just logging in and doing nothing. --Steve (talk) 13:53, 5 June 2011 (EDT)

New Layout
Now, I'm not trying to bash you, or the wiki, I love it. But I think it needs to be easier to navigate, not exactly getting to characters and items and different pages and stuff, I'm talking about making it easier for users to try and find out who are sysops or patroller are, in case they need to contact them immediately. I also think we should clean up the front page, maybe have less stuff on it or something, and also think about it from a new-comers point of view, the easiest way to navigate through this website. I don't know if i should put this in proposals or not, and I'm not trying to be mean to you or the wiki, im trying to make it easier for everyone who comes here, users or new-comers.
— The preceding unsigned comment was added by Blue Koop Star (talk).
- That's fine, but you need to make specific suggestions such as "I think MarioWiki:Administrators should be linked to from page X" or "Here is my proposed redesign for the main page." --Steve (talk) 22:08, 24 June 2011 (EDT)

Edits
Hey Steve. I have a possible glitch find. When I look at my Editcount on my preferences, it is about 200 more edits than what it says on Editcount. Is this a glitch or something? Supremo
- No, that's normal. My guess would be that the preferences one doesn't decrement when an edit is deleted. --Steve (talk) 19:49, 2 July 2011 (EDT)
New Idea
Hey again Steve! I have a new idea that I feel I don't want to propose without your approval. Wikipedia has the thing called Request for administration (RfA). This would be a much easier way of getting nominated to a sysop, or even such a patroller. The whole "community" could vote instead of the few administrators that talk about nominating or demoting a user. If approved by you, I think there should be 5 'crats, 15 sysops, and 8 patrollers. Oh, and by the way, this is not me asking to be nominated. It's an idea. Supremo 21:14, 6 July 2011 (EDT)
- It's got to be something all the admins want to do; I'm not going to force something like that on them. Since they haven't looked into creating a system like that as of yet, I'm guessing that they aren't too interested. --Steve (talk) 21:20, 6 July 2011 (EDT)

If you don't mind...
Porplemontage, with the 6th Anniversary coming closer day by day, and being just barely over a month away from now, there is a lot of things going on that you are probably busy with. All I can to ask was - as the Awards Mafia is be promoted on Template:Announcement - if you could add [2] <-- this to it. Barely anyone has signed up for it, and I really would like to have this tournament to actually be done this year since we have never had a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament before for the Wiki. If it is not too much trouble, could you help promote this tournament by putting it in that template? Baby Mario Bloops
- Well, first thing is that I don't want there to be more than three lines on that template. Your thing could be merged-in, but I don't know if it's important enough to be added in the first place. So you have to talk to Awards-Sysop people. --Steve (talk) 19:24, 11 July 2011 (EDT)
Lindsay151
I don't know if it's against the rules to do this, but I think you should think about promoting Lindsay151 (talk). She is very active, makes very good edits, reverts vandalism and all of that stuff. She's also made above 20,000 edits. I think she deserves to be a sysop, but I will respect your opinion on whatever you have to say. Supremo 17:59, 12 July 2011 (EDT)

<gallery> tags
Hello Steve (Porplemontage) of MarioWiki,
Can you manually change the way <gallery> tags function by making having a row with 5 images instead of 4. It would be beneficial to all galleries without resorting to manually adding some code that makes the system do that. Plus with the ads at the right removed, you can properly see the page properly under the minimum screen resolution of 1024x768. I was asking 2257 if he can do it, but he said it's up to you to decide. Please respond. --RAP... 00:23, 24 July 2011 (EDT)
- That was good of you to check the resolution, but the site needs to be optimized to 1024x768 for logged-out users who see the ads. So we really need to avoid using 5 for now; we can't have the ads blocking content for those users. --Steve (talk) 00:35, 24 July 2011 (EDT)
- Seriously? Hmmm...logging out and checking...and logging back in...alrighty, fair enough. Unfortunately, that means one of you guys have to check all the galleries and kill the "5 images in a row" code...unless... got an idea to workaround that! If you log in, the gallery will display 5 images in a row, when log out - it will revert back to 4 images in a row (because of the ads at the right). How 'bout that dude? XD --RAP... 00:49, 24 July 2011 (EDT)

Bot
Hello Steve. I was testing a bot on my local server using Pywikipediabot, and I was wondering if I could try it out here. See the admin board for more details. --Yoshario (Talk) 20:12, 29 July 2011 (EDT)
- Well, I guess you can use it for broken and double redirects. We already welcome new users and mass replace text sounds a little risky right now. --Steve (talk) 23:14, 29 July 2011 (EDT)
- A Python script is ran from the terminal to go through broken redirects, and the bot places a delete tag on it. I might have to modify the source to make it place the MarioWiki delete tag, because the bot was written for Wikimedia. I could also try having it delete broken redirects if the bot could be granted sysop tools. On another note, could you provide me with the $wgScriptPath value on your LocalSettings.php? I'm messing around with the config file to try to get it to work and I think that could be of use to me. --Yoshario (Talk) 00:03, 30 July 2011 (EDT)
- $wgScriptPath is an empty string: "" --Steve (talk) 00:05, 30 July 2011 (EDT)
- I suspect the reason pywikipedia will not log me in is due to something before the <?php on your LocalSettings.php or any other file you edit. This may be visible, or may not be. If it is visible, you should erase it (unless you have some reason for having it there). If it isn't visible, it is probably a byte order mark. This suggests to take a text editor and to save LocalSettings.php over itself with "Unicode (UTF-8 Without signature) - Codepage 65001". If this is too much trouble, I understand. --Yoshario (Talk) 00:30, 30 July 2011 (EDT)
- $wgScriptPath is an empty string: "" --Steve (talk) 00:05, 30 July 2011 (EDT)
Yeah, I don't think it's worth the trouble to get into this. Thanks for the thought, anyway. --Steve (talk) 00:32, 30 July 2011 (EDT)

Gallery Pages
- I was kind of wondering about the gallery pages, and why you reduced them to displaying only four images per row. I can understand if a gallery section only has 16 images or less, but if we're talking about 16+ images, I would think that displaying 5 images per row would be fine. I'm probably guessing that you're doing this because not all computer users have widescreen monitors.
Anyway, if you have the time, be sure to give me the story. M&SG (talk) 08:25, 1 August 2011 (EDT)
