“Hiii!!”
Kirby, Super Smash Bros.

Kirby is a creature from the planet Pop Star. He lives in the country called Dream Land. However, his land is ruled by the corrupt King Dedede, who frequently causes trouble. But Kirby always manages to protect his land. His species is unknown but apparently a "Kirby" is a species of its own, as Meta Knight also resembles Kirby when his mask is off and many other different colored Kirbys appear in various other Kirby games. Kirby rarely appears in the Mario series, but his most notable appearance alongside Mario is the Super Smash Bros. series.

History

Club Nintendo

"Super Mario: Mario im Wunderland"

Kirby makes several appearances in the Club Nintendo comic series. In "Super Mario: Mario im Wunderland," he is unhappy with his pillow-like appearance and wishes to look like Mega Man. Crab the wizard, however, turns him into a toaster.

"Warios Weihnachtsmärchen"

Kirby in form of a "surprise bomb."

In the story "Warios Weihnachtsmärchen," he is caged for unknown reasons in Wario's Bomb Shop and expresses his anger by commanding Wario to free him. The shopkeeper, however, paints him black and sells him as a "surprise bomb." When the buyer, Kid Klown, finds out about Kirby being the "surprise", both are angry at Wario. At the end of the story, they forgive him, as he gives some cookies to them.

"Super Mario in Die Nacht des Grauens"

He makes one more appearance in the comic "Super Mario in Die Nacht des Grauens," featuring him as Mario's ally in the fight against Abigor. In this story, Kirby lives in a skyscraper together with several other Nintendo characters. In order to fight Abigor, who plans to take over the building, Kirby together with Mario and Link puts on some magic clothes and serums which turn them into aggressive ghostbusters. In this form, Kirby uses his Inhale and Fire Breath abilites to fight Abigor's allies.

Mario Kirby Masterpiece

Kirby appeared alongside Mario in the obscure educational video Mario Kirby Masterpiece; however, this video was merely a compilation of their non-intertwining adventures. In Kirby's Mario Kirby Masterpiece segment, he helps a little lost dog find its mother, who was kidnapped by King Dedede.

Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros.

File:Kirsmashone.PNG
Kirby as seen in Super Smash Bros.

Kirby appears in Super Smash Bros., whereas Kirby is eight inches high: his dimensions were obviously heightened for this game. Kirby was a light fighter, and most of his attacks were light-weight (except for his Stone attack, of course). However, Kirby had a unique ability, so far restricted to him. He is able to use suction abilities, and pull an opposing fighter inside his mouth. Once he spat that player out, Kirby would gain one of their powers. This attack was taken straight from the Kirby series. Each character gives him a differant attack, and he could easily get rid of the power by taunting. This ability made him a favorite among players.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Kirby as seen in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Kirby returned in the games sequel Super Smash Bros. Melee. He was still a default character, but was lighter, slower and generally weaker than before. His new attack, is the Hammer.

In Adventure Mode, Kirby appears in Stage 5: Green Greens. The player must battle 18 Kirby's, each with a different power. If the 18 Kirby's are defeated in less than 30 seconds, a giant Kirby will appear to battle the player.

Kirby's special moves from Melee are used in the game Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, through the use of the ability called Smash. The moves he gets are Neutral Air Hammer, Final Cutter, Stone, and Vulcan Jab. He gets the ability from Master Hand, who is a boss in the game.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Kirby returns in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, along with his rival Meta Knight and archenemy King Dedede. Kirby's Final Smash attack is called Cook Kirby. Stage 5 of Classic Mode always uses characters from the Kirby series, thus Kirby has a chance of appearing in it. Stage 15 of All-Star Mode is also Kirby based.

The Subspace Emissary
File:Subspace kirby.PNG
Kirby's snapshot in The Subspace Emissary.

In the beginning, a trophy of Mario and Kirby are thrown into an arena. The two come to life and fight. The player chooses the one to play with. After the battle between the two, the winner resurrects the loser with a touch. The Subspace Army attacks the stadium. Mario, Kirby, Peach, and Zelda oppose them. Mario is blown away and Kirby is ambushed by Petey Piranha, who has captured the princesses. Kirby then goes off against Petey. Whoever is freed, afterwards Kirby takes them for a ride off into the Sea of Clouds on his Warp Star before being hit onto the Halberd. Soon after, an Arwing gets shot down, blowing both the Princess and Kirby off the Halberd onto the ground below.

After they land in some grassy area, Kirby starts walking away leaving the princess behind. The princess turns around and sees Bowser with a Dark Cannon who immediately shoots the princess and turns her into a trophy. Kirby then hops on King Dedede's Cargo (originally belonged to Wario) and waits there. After King Dedede collects the Mario and Pit trophies (depending on which princess was saved, it could have been also Link and Yoshi), Kirby hops out. King Dedede then gasps and with his Cutter Sword, Kirby destroys the large object that is holding the two trophies. Kirby quickly revives the two and they all jump off the car. King Dedede turns around and leaves.

Kirby and Mario, Pit, Link and Yoshi all become a team and go off to save the other trophies (the princess, Ness and Luigi). They reach King Dedede's Castle but are still unable to rescue the trophies as Bowser escapes with the princess trophy in his Koopa Clown Car, while the other trophies are buried under a large pile of stones. While Bowser steals the princess, the badge that Dedede had put on the princess falls off. Kirby goes off to inspect it and swallows it. The team then leaves because soon, Dedede's Castle is destroyed by another Subspace Bomb. After leaving, they reach a desert below the castle where they follow the Ancient Minister. However the Ancient Minister sends R.O.Bs out to stop them and he sets another bomb. It explodes however Mario hops on Yoshi and rides off. Meanwhile, Pit and Link hop on Kirby's Warp Star and fly off. They escape before the explosion can reach them.

Template:Spoiler Later, Kirby and the others find the Ice Climbers, Marth, Lucas, the Pokémon Trainer and Ike fighting the Subspace Army and subsequently join the fight. All of the other heroes join up with them afterwards. Near the end, when the heroes are all fighting Ganondorf and Bowser in their large Subspace Gunship, Kirby ends up destroying the gunship. He comes in riding Dragoon and flies right into the villain's large cannon, destroying not only the cannon but the whole ship itself. Ganondorf and Bowser escape by going in the large black hole in the sky. All the heroes follow them inside. They are all in Subspace itself. Kirby and all the other attempt to fight Tabuu; however, they are all defeated with his Off Waves. The badge that Kirby swallowed turns out to have the power to turn a trophy back to life. Kirby is brought back and goes off to revive Link, Yoshi, Peach, Zelda, the Ice Climbers, Meta Knight, Lucario, R.O.B., Solid Snake, and even Wario, who also had been working with the Subspace Army and ended up in Subspace earlier on. Soon Kirby comes across Ganondorf in his trophy form, but before he could do anything, Bowser suddenly appears and starts attacking Ganondorf, having been betrayed by him earlier. Dedede (who revived Luigi and Ness with the badges) then reunites with Kirby. Kirby, as well as everyone else, fights Tabuu a second time and are able to defeat him. Template:Endspoiler

Mario & Luigi series

Kirby made a cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga in the Yoshi Theater poster. There was a poster in the theater advertising a movie known as Kirby Story, whose artwork featured Kirby riding a Warpstar through the air.

Special Moves

Inhale

Inhale
Kirby, swallowing Mario.

Kirby's Inhale (Swallow in Melee and Brawl) attack, which appeared in all three games from the Super Smash Bros. series, is his standard special move. When Kirby swallows an opponent, three things may happen. If the player presses the special or down button, Kirby will in almost all cases copy his opponent's standard special attack in the place of Inhale, as well as receiving one of the several Kirby Hats corresponding with whichever opponent he swallowed. This does not work on the following only:

If the player presses the A or Z button, Kirby will spit out the character, doing damage to them. Kirby does not absorb their abilities by doing this. Also, the opponent can break free from Kirby if they rapidly mash buttons.

In the original Super Smash Bros., if Kirby holds an opponent in his mouth, he would be unable to walk or jump until he spits or swallows the enemy. All he is limited to in movement is to turn around. This was fixed in Super Smash Bros. Melee. If Kirby uses his Taunt, he will let go of the power that he gained.

Hammer

File:BrawlHammerMove.jpg
Kirby's hammer.

Not to be confused with Mario and Luigi's Hammer, Hammer is a special move that Kirby can use in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is Kirby's side+B move, and the attack differs in the air. On the ground, Kirby will pull out a very large hammer, hold it back, and then swipe across, hurting anyone who gets hit. It is a good long distance move, but it takes a while to use. In the air, Kirby will pull out the Hammer, and he will spin forward with the hammer out. This is also a good long range attack. The attack itself is one of the Kirby's many weapons in the Kirby series. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, however, when done in mid-air, rather than going vertical, it now spins twice horizontally.

Final Cutter

File:BrawlFinalCutter.jpg
Kirby, using Final Cutter.

Final Cutter is an attack that Kirby can use in all three Super Smash Bros. games. To execute it, up+B must be pressed. Kirby will fly up with a Scimitar and crush down on the ground, damaging any opponents. Also, the move doesn't stop there. When Kirby hits the ground with the sword, a blue wave will be sent across the ground, damaging any opponents that hit it. The attack hits the opponent on the way up, hits them on the way down, and hits them from afar. It also acts as a third jump. The move is notable for being one of Kirby's Sword Kirby forms many abilities in several of the Kirby series games. (It is also worth noting that the name "Final Cutter" may have been derived from "Cutter Kirby", another of Kirby's forms.) Final Cutter is not to be confused with Cutter, a character from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

Stone

The different forms that Kirby uses when he utilizes his Stone ability.

Stone is an attack used by Kirby in all three Super Smash Bros. games. Kirby will use this attack only if the B Button is pressed while holding the Control Stick down. Once this is done, Kirby will transform into a random heavy object. He cannot move in this state, but he can't be hurt. However, nothing stands in the way of a grab attack. The attack is best used in the air, so that Kirby can drop down on the opponent. In the original Super Smash Bros., Kirby only turned into a rock. However, in the sequel and Brawl, Kirby could change into different things: a Garbage Block from Panel de Pon, a pink rock (the original Stone from Kirby's Adventure) , a 100T weight, a spiked ball (bearing a similar look to a Gordo), and even a Thwomp.

Cook

Cook Kirby
Kirby, preparing to cook many things including items and characters.

Cook Kirby is the name of Kirby's Final Smash move in the new game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When he breaks open the Smash Ball during a fight, he pulls out a giant pot, and wears a chef's hat. He then continues to use his spatula to draw players, and even items into the pot, and starts to simmer the boiling water around. As he does this, he damages the players caught in the pot massively. He then takes out all of the players, who then get sent flying across the stage, with items coming out.

Solid Snake Codec Conversation

  • Otacon: Snake! Watch out!
  • Snake: For what? That pink marshmallow?
  • Otacon: That's Kirby, also known as "Kirby from Dream Land." He's from another planet--in other words, an extraterrestrial. He's got a powerful stomach that lets him swallow and digest anything. And he also has a "Copy Ability" that allows him to mimic opponents, steal their moves, and use those moves against them. On top of that, he has the power to fly around the stage, so once he's got you in his sights, there's no place to run.
  • Snake: ...Huh? Yeah, got it. I'll... keep an eye out.

Profile Information from Super Smash Bros.

The 8-inch high Kirby hails from a distant, peaceful star. Like his simplistic appearance, he is an easily-understood character. True to his instincts, Kirby eats when he gets hungry and sleeps as soon as he grows tired. Nevertheless, Kirby remains a formidable opponent. In addition to his distinct flying and swallowing skills, he also has the ability to copy enemy attacks for ever-changing action.

A denizen of the far-off, peaceful planet Pop Star, Kirby became a citizen of Dream Land after defeating King Dedede. (Adventure)
B: Swallow
Smash B: Hammer
Kirby's small size lets him dodge many attacks, but his light weight makes him fly far when struck. Using his ability to inflate, he can jump five times. His Swallow attack creates wild combos; not only can he copy foes' moves, but he'll also put on special hats and mimic their voices. His Hammer is unwieldy but powerful.
18 Kirby [Smash]
(All-Star)
Up & B: Final Cutter
Down & B: Stone
Because of his light weight, Kirby is always in danger of being sent flying, but his ability to puff up and fly allows him to come back from amazing distances. Brawl

# Name Image Appearance(s) Description
11 Kirby GB Kirby's Dream Land
SNES Kirby Super Star
A round, pink ball of cuteness from a distant, peaceful star. He can swallow anything with his gigantic mouth, then spit it out as ammo. He has the handy ability to copy powers and use them as his own. His hovering ability lets him fly through the air with ease. He's so round, he's sometimes treated like a ball.
12 Cook Kirby WII Super Smash Bros. Brawl Kirby in chef's garb. When Kirby throws on his chef's hat, a giant pot appears in the center of the screen. All characters, items, and even long-distance weapons are sucked into the pot. Once they've simmered a bit, food items equal to the number of things in the pot appear. Characters in the mix get blasted straight up out of the pot.
392 Beam Kirby Kirby's Adventure
1993
Kirby in a jester cap...and a supercute Kirby at that. Beam Kirby features a Beam ability, acquired by inhaling Waddle Doo, that allows him to shoot a whiplike beam at his enemies. With a wide attack range, this ability is extremely easy to use, especially for taking out enemies in bunches. In Kirby Super Star, this beam can also be charged and fired.
393 Needle Kirby Kirby's Adventure
1993
A Kirby ability made when Kirby inhales a spiked enemy. When attacking, the needles on Needle Kirby's body extend, giving him a porcupine-like look. This ability provides both offensive and defensive measures against nearby enemies. Plus, needles which extend on Kirby's underside when jumping eliminate any threats on landing.
394 Sword Kirby Kirby's Adventure
1993
A Kirby ability made when Kirby inhales a sword-wielding foe or a sword itself. Doing so provides Kirby with a rapid sword slash, a jumping sword spin, or even the energy-beam blast of the Final Sword. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that this is the #1 Copy Ability in terms of accessibility.
395 Sleep Kirby Kirby's Adventure
1993
Kirby after he copies the ability to sleep peacefully. Kirby takes on this form when he inhales Noddy or other such enemies. Kirby cannot move at all while sleeping, so extra care should be taken not to use this ability when enemies are near. Kirby, in his slumber, tends to drool, and in his panicked awakening, isn't it cute how he forgets to wipe off the drool?
396 Wing Kirby Kirby Super Star
1996
Kirby when he inhales a winged enemy and copies its flying ability. This ability can be used to proceed through strong winds that would otherwise be too tough to overcome. Wing Kirby can also perform a plethora of attack moves, such as the Bomber Head, where Kirby dive-bombs onto enemy heads.
397 Fighter Kirby Kirby's Adventure
1993
Kirby when he is skilled in martial arts, especially close-quarters combat. Inhaling brawny challengers like Knuckle Joe will transform Kirby, allowing him to use a bunch of fight moves like Rising Break, the heroic uppercut. His Mega Power Shot in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, which used charged energy to take out faraway enemies, is another Fighter Kirby highlight.
398 Fire Kirby Kirby's Adventure
1993
Kirby when he inhales an enemy who uses fire. Shooting fire from his mouth, Fire Kirby can cook enemies from afar. This ability also allows Kirby to light explosive blocks, fuses, and so on. In Kirby Super Star and Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Fire Kirby can roll his burning body into enemies as an attack move.
399 Ice Kirby Kirby's Adventure
1993
Kirby when he copies an enemy with chilly abilities. Ice Kirby can blow an icy wind from his mouth and freeze enemies solid. These frozen enemies can then be knocked into other enemies as an additional means of attack. These blocks are not only effective against enemies but can also be used on terrain such as magma or water.
400 Plasma Kirby Kirby Super Star
1996
Kirby when he inhales Plasma Wisps, which glow with a neon green flame. Plasma Kirby can charge the plasma strength up to a maximum level of 5. In Kirby Super Star, your attack--be it a Plasma Laser or a Plasma Wave Cannon--varies with the length of time you charge it.
401 Tornado Kirby Kirby's Adventure
1993
Kirby when he inhales enemies that fly around like twisters through the sky. When in tornado form, Kirby can spin freely through the air for short amounts of time, clearing out groups of enemies. Tornado Kirby will continue spinning and bouncing violently off of obstacles until he comes to a stop. One drawback of Tornado Kirby is the control difficulty.
