Birdo
The English name "Birdo" derives from "bird," a potential allusion to her association with eggs. However, it was not immediately conveyed that this was her name when the character was first introduced to the West. Unlike the original Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, the names for Birdo and the ostrich enemy Ostro are swapped in the staff rolls for Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario All-Stars[387][388] and this swap is reflected in the localized instruction booklets for these games as well across all languages. Subsequent media to feature these characters quickly rectified this misapplication, with this character referred to as "Birdo" in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and other pieces of promotional material from Super Mario Bros. 2. The Japanese name for Birdo is the feminine European name "Catherine"「キャサリン」(Kyasarin) and she is referred to by this name in localizations for Wario's Woods. In some of the paratext for Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, Super Mario USA, and Super Mario Advance, which features different iterations of Birdo with different colors and means of attack, she is referred to as the "Pink Birdo."[389][390][391]
In the English instruction booklet for Super Mario Bros. 2 and most other localizations, Birdo is asserted to prefer going by the name "birdetta." However, this name is archaic, as it does not appear outside of the instruction booklets for Super Mario Bros. 2 and her trophy description in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In most scenarios where the character speaks, she refers to herself as "Birdo." In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, she prefers going by the diminutive nickname "Birdie." In the Japanese release of Superstar Saga and the original instruction booklet for Super Mario USA, it specifies the nickname she enjoys being called is「キャシー」(Kyashī, "Cathy"), a diminutive derivation of "Catherine."

Birdo (Grey)
"Birdo (Grey)" refers to a specific Birdo that spits fireballs in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2. Due to palette limitations in the original games on the Famicom and NES, Birdo (Grey) appears green in some contexts and was initially recognized as a green variety of Birdo in the original Doki Doki Panic.[389] She is recognized as a gray variant in the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia and Mario Portal.[418] Unlike other gray-colored variants in these sources, the British "grey" is employed instead of the American "gray." She is not to be confused with the Birdo (Green) of subsequent games.
