- “Hmm... What's this? Some kind of platform? Is that a picture of the sun?”
- —Olivia, Paper Mario: The Origami King
The Sun Altar is a location in Paper Mario: The Origami King. This monument can be found in the northeastern part of the Scorching Sandpaper Desert.
History
When Mario and Olivia enter the Scorching Sandpaper Desert, they happen upon the altar. It depicts an image of the sun in the center. At the back are a pair of torches with a bowl of sand in between them. An ancient text is inscribed on the altar, which translates as follows: "To open up a secret door, offer the sun a scent adored..."
When Mario acquires the Sun Incense from the front desk at the Snif City hotel, he places it onto the bowl of sand. Doing so ends up summoning the Mega Paper Macho Pokey, which pulls our heroes (and the Boot Car) into a sandstorm. Mario ends up defeating the Pokey, which explodes into confetti, releasing the renowned archaeologist Professor Toad, who had been swallowed by the creature. The professor looks at the altar, and he deduces that the ritual was performed correctly. Olivia is thrilled that she and Mario have found someone who can decipher the Ancient Ones' writing.
