The Beast Is Back Tour was a promotional event organized by Nintendo to promote Donkey Kong 64. The tour involved a large truck containing twelve Nintendo 64 systems (each featuring a copy of Donkey Kong 64), a person in a Donkey Kong costume, and presumably Donkey Kong 64-related merchandise. Visitors also apparently had the opportunity to "practice their ape calls".

Locations

The tour stopped in the following cities:

Website description

Without a doubt, Donkey Kong has to be the hardest working gorilla in show business. He just wrapped up work on his cross-country Beast Is Back tour, and now he's busy fighting King K. Rool in his recently released 3D adventure Donkey Kong 64. Doesn't this dude sleep?

The official Beast Is Back truck was stocked with 12 Nintendo 64 systems featuring brand-spankin' new copies of Donkey Kong 64. The truck stopped at various hot spots across the country, giving gamers a chance to preview DK's latest game, practice their ape calls and grab cool DK loot.

We've compiled some funky photos from DK's adventures, from the windy streets of Chicago to the slippery sidewalks of Seattle. Click on the cities listed below to view snapshots from each metropolitan invasion.

Chicago image descriptions

  • Donkey Kong gives away some free T-shirts in the windy city.
  • Is DK dancing, or taking a sobriety test?
  • Even in a big city like Chicago, Donkey Kong stands out in a crowd.
  • Lucky contestants don gorilla suits and compete to see who has the best ape call. At least they're staying warm!
  • Donkey Kong poses with a group of admiring fans.

Oklahoma City image descriptions

  • At the Bricktown Haunted Warehouse, a monstrous gorilla fits in quite nicely.
  • After fighting the bosses in DK 64, haunted houses are child's play.
  • At Oklahoma City University, students had the opportunity to relax with some DK 64 between classes.
  • That's it, skip chemistry class and blow the afternoon trying to unlock Chunky Kong.

Albuquerque image descriptions

  • The Beast Is Back trailer arrives at the Boys and Girls Club of Albuquerque.
  • Nothing beats free T-shirts, especially when they're emblazoned with the DK 64 logo.
  • "We have Donkey Kong 64 T-shirts and you don't!"
  • At the University of New Mexico, students would much rather preview DK 64 than endure another lecture.
  • If you look closely, you can spot a student crawling into a gorilla suit, preparing to give his all in the ape call contest.

Los Angeles image descriptions

  • At the Northridge Kmart, customers could save money and take DK 64 for a test drive all at one convenient location. It likes this youngster doesn't appreciate his sister's attempts to take his controller[sic].
  • No blue light specials, but free DK gear was flyin'.
  • The Beast Is Back Tour stops at the Malibu Castle Golf and Arcade.
  • It looks like somebody was testing the breaking point of the arcade security guards.
  • If you were a 300-pound gorilla in Los Angeles, where would you go? The Los Angeles Zoo, of course!
  • Another ape caller goes for the gold.

Seattle image descriptions

  • DK gets cheesy at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.
  • A panel of judges rate the performance of a talented ape caller.
  • Let it out, buddy. It's all gonna be ok.
  • With his new-found fame, Donkey Kong has already begun preparing for the talk show circuit. You go, DK.
