Why I got rid of the trivia in the article
"*Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will become the first game in the Mario Kart series to get released before a Mario platform game gets released on the same system. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will be launched in April 2017 and the Mario platformer, Super Mario Odyssey, will be launched in the holiday season of 2017."
This trivia takes advantage of a very specific scenario to make an "interesting" point, which is very easy to observe for any game if you think things through hard enough and had a convenient game series to compare to. I can say that Mario Party 4 and Mario Party 8 are the only Mario Party games to be released before a Mario Kart on a system and it would be just as valid. Would it as equally applicable to add to a trivia section? No.
Besides, this game is a port of an older released game. It's not a new entry on the Mario Kart series, unlike all other Mario Kart titles, and we don't know if we'll get a proper sequel in the system, which raises questions if it will count more or not.

This trivia is very silly. It states pretty much the obvious, something that can be easily included in the opening paragraph, and it had to include "without emulation" to make a point otherwise, you cannot count the Virtual Console games. Trivia works best when it has to make the fewest exceptions as possible cover up any flaws noted in it, and this one is perhaps the game that has the greatest exception of games to make a point. Potential new mode
I just wanted to point out this picture above. It shows them in a battle stage but we see Toadette holding a Boomerang and none of them have Balloons. It can't be Bob-omb Blast since you only get Bob-ombs and King Boo does have the leader crown on. In the treehouse stream at around the 2 hour and 45 minute mark, they did say the full release will contain some more surprises. Could this be showing a new mode? I'm guessing we'll go with what the colors actually are instead of what the game officially calls them, because in Splatoon the turquoiseish color seen in the picture is actually just called blue and so is the regular blue. - A new Mii costume (the Inkling one) has been confirmed, so the missing character is indeed Mii. Both Villager Types Active
Havn't seen this anywhere else, but i thought i'd bring this up. Both Villager variants are capable of being active at the same time in the original Mario Kart 8. I've seen it a few times in races. Not sure if anyone else has, but just noting it here that has happened. If no one else has experienced or seen it i wont push for the change on the article. - Cubeguy(talk)
- It must be cleared what "active" means. If a player chooses one of the Villagers, the software can choose and control the other Villager, of course. - This really doesn't confirm it, HOWEVER it does say over 40 characters and theres currently 42 in this version, so unless nintendo decided to sneak some more full metal characters in it (wouldn't be surprising at this point), probably is just a variant choice. Coin Runners - Closer to MKW's than MK7's
Perhaps it's worth mentioning in the article that Coin Runners will be much more similar to MKWii than MK7's; in MK7, you can only get a maximum of 10 coins, but in MKWii, you can continue past 10. Battle Mode Invincibility Frames
I'm suprised this hasn't been noticed/mentioned in the main article yet, but invincibility frames are back; like in previous Mario Kart games, players now get a short amount of invincibility frames upon being hit in battle mode (around 1.5 seconds to be exact). This was notably absent in the original MK8..

- Pretty much, yeah. Notice how he doesn't flash/blink upon being hit? That's no invincibility frames. It's quite possible to eliminate a player instantly in around 5 seconds in MK8 if somebody gets triple green shells (fire one, wait for the stun animation to wear off, snipe them with the second, wait again, snipe with the third). I've Watched A Few Videos Of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Gameplay, And I Believe It's Possible To Get Some Of The Stat Changes That Way.
Mario's New Base Stats Are:
Speed: MK8DX: 3.75 MK8: 3.75
Acceleration: MK8DX: 3.5 MK8: 2.5
Weight: MK8DX: 3.5 MK8: 3.75
Handling: MK8DX: 3.5 MK8: 3.25
Grip: MK8DX: 3.5 MK8: 3.75
While Mario's Speed Doesn't Change, His Acceleration Gets A Large Boost.

Battle Course maps

- Confirms no stamps on the main menu.
- Shows there is a "Random Battle" option.
- Shows new option to change character and kart combination without leaving an online lobby; pressing "Y" during the course selection portion of an online lobby allows you to change the combination.
- Records are more detailed; more records and pages.
- Mentions that during Renegade Runners, Pirahna Plant temporarily lose their bite attack upon being hit.
- Also mentions that the holder of the Shine in Shine Thief drives a little slower than the other drivers (likely to prevent people from running away with the Shine indefinitely).

Question about character and vehicle part stats + FIRE HOPPING GONE
Just a quick question; when the game releases, will we be putting the character and vehicle part stats in the article like how they are on the MK8 one, seeing as they are different?

Official Character and Vehicle Part Stats starting to surface - may be useful to creating early/preliminary stats tables
I was doing some research, because I am thoroughly interested in finding out how the character and vehicle parts stats have been changed.

It initially started as a thread to find all images and video footage of new stats, but eventually evolved into a thread which ended up figuring out many of the new stat combinations.
There is lots more in that thread, such as the figuring out of individual parts, but just to provide some basic info, images have been found of all the different varying "weight" classes in the game, and trust me, there's a lot.
From what we can gather, there are still the three weight classes (Light, Medium and Heavy), but there is looking to be more variation in them this time; it looks like there are 4 different stat variations per weight class.
Here are some example images for you all to see (there could be used to start a preliminary stat table for example):

These are the base stats for these characters; they all use the standard vehicle parts that are confirmed to be basic with no boosts/losses.
What's more, character specific bonuses, a-la Mario Kart Wii, are definitely out of the picture, because we already know of three characters with identical stats within one group, being Peach, Daisy and Yoshi, so it's definitely that there is just more variation within weight classes now. For all we know, the characters we don't know about could vary even more. Characters like Koopa Troopa, Luigi and Rosalina could fit into different stat variations within their light, medium and heavy groups respectively. However, this seems very unlikely now given all the information dug up.
What is certain though, is we already know a fair few characters' base stats, so a table could well start to be made. We also now know some of the vehicle part stats too.
Thought this would be useful; would likely save time before the game is released.

- Thanks for the effort, just so you know, I'm already tracking all the stats of the characters with that spreadsheet made by a user I know well. There is no need for preliminary tables, as the parts tables are literally MK8 ones with different values and the added DLC parts, while the characters' groups need to be known before making the characters stats table. - I spotted something that seems quite disturbing. Not everyone is using the exact same stat total whenever they're using the default vehicle parts, which is a sign of improper balancing. When Mario uses the default parts, his stat total adds up to 17.75, so I would think that all the other characters would have that very same stat total as well. After all, in Mario Kart 8, excluding the hidden stats, everyone had the exact same stat total, which was 17. M&SG (talk) 12:37, 21 April 2017 (EDT)

Acceleration Tiers ARE GONE!
I was unsure whether it should be mentioned in the article; I was thinking of adding it anyway (seeing as Fire Hopping is mentioned), and it's easy enough to remove if it needs removing, but thought I would mention it here regardless.

Off topic, this is another change I am personally happy for the removal of. Fire Hopping was a tough one; it added something to the game on one hand but took away something (the sense of competition) for those who couldn't do it. Acceleration tiers just felt like a needless restriction.
Besides, IIRC, acceleration tiers were never present in 200cc mode in vanilla MK8, right?
Anyway, acceleration tiers are gone now.

- Nice find there. The only downside is knowing that the acceleration boosting gliders now weaken the ground speed stat; that basically means that even if your combo does accelerate faster, the ground speed difference will cause the slower acceleration combo to move faster than the higher acceleration combo when both combos hit top speed. - I'm sorry, but you were looking at the wrong side. Both in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 acceleration was never tiered in the way you think. Basically, there was always an increase in the stats, but the first stat, which is an acceleration limiter that always increased when increasing thte acceleration stat, was so high that it almost never limited acceleration with 0 coins on 150cc. If you just increased maximum speed, you could see that even in 150cc acceleration was working correctly, increasing when increasing the acceleration stat. 200cc increased maximum speed by 50% and thus absolute acceleration as well, revealing that the strong tiering was never there to begin with. - I think I understand you. However, explain this - if you lined up characters with 0 coins on 150cc on MK8 and increased the acceleration by 0.25 each time from say, 3 up until 3.75, they would all accelerate at the same pace. In the same circumstances in MK8Deluxe (as shown in that video I showcased; in fact, here is the 3 to 3.75 example https://youtu.be/8BvpoTUrKTU?t=251), each combo accelerates a tiny bit faster than the other. Regardless of speeds, etc, this indicates that something has indeed changed with the acceleration stat, or how it's calculated. I don't know what the best way to explain it would be. I changed the speed of Mario Kart 8 editing the stats file, making it 50% higher. I locally recorded the ghost - even though I deliberately obtained a bad time uploading a hacked time is still a bad thing so don't do it if you want to redo the test! - and did the same comparison. Actually, I even cared to compare pair of combinations that only differed in acceleration and not top speed, as increasing maximum speed increases acceleration determined by Drive_SpdKfFwd as well. When I did this, all hard acceleration tiers were gone, and acceleration increased every time the acceleration stat increased, just like in 200cc, where the speed is 50% higher. If you want, I can record the tests and upload them on Twitch if you need data to cite. Regarding Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the author didn't clearly mention whether 150cc Time Trials or 200cc Time Trials in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe were compared, so if anything we should know this first by asking him. If it turns out that he tested 150cc Time Trials, this might be due to two factors:
- Different maximum speed values
- Different acceleration values

- The video does show the stat differences between the three combos that were being tested. However, the tests were not done on Toad Harbor, and since the acceleration boosting gliders also weaken the ground speed stat now, there's always the chance that a margin of error exists during the tests. Again, even if one combo accelerates faster, if the speed stats are different, then the faster combo will eventually outspeed the slower combo as they get closer to reaching their top speed. New Time Trials Ghosts
Along with 200cc TTs having their own staff ghosts, it seems 150cc staff ghosts have obtained minor improvements

- Again, it would be intriguing to know if the times are better just because the staff was better, if they are better because the maximum speed in-game stats were tweaked, giving a speed increase that might also be responsible for the disappearance of the hard tiering in the acceleration, or if this is just the effect of the Ultra Mini-Turbo. Coins Required to unlock Kart Parts
After having played MK8D for a few hours, I've noticed that parts are unlocked in increments of 30, as I've noticed that I've gotten unlock popups at 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 coins. No other increment seems apparent at the moment. Has this been noted already, or is this new information? (talk) 20:37, 28 April 2017 (EST)
- Yeah, I've noticed that too. I got unlock popups at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 coins. I'm not sure if it's always like that, we just have to play the game and take notes to find out. Shy Guy on Wheels(T|C|S) 11:50, 1 May 2017 (EDT) - Actually it was 1500 Coins that it changes to 100 per unlock, because the following unlock came at 1600, with the final RNG Kart Piece being awarded at 3100 total Coins (Still being awarded an unlock each 100). I farmed a little further beyond that and didn't get an unlock for 3200 or 3350. I mentioned exactly when the numbers changed in a chat I always have access to, so I can definitely say the Coin tiers swapped at 450 -> 500 and 1500 -> 1600. Those stats are not really out of 6, the PRIMA guide just uses the proper format - the in-game format. - So the guide considers Peach and Daisy to be lightweight characters? That heavily contradicts with how this article categorizes the weight classes. Miis face expression

More Rivals
I think they added a few things to the rival system compared to Mario Kart 8. In the original Mario Kart 8, only the original 12 characters shown off at the game's reveal at E3 had rivals in the game. However, I've noticed a few consistent characters in Deluxe that appear when you use specific characters. I did a few tests with Ludwig, Roy and Metal Mario; I started 3 grand prix with each character and when I did, Iggy was in all three when I played as Ludwig, Morton was in all three when I played as Roy and Pink Gold Peach was present when I used Metal Mario. Adding to that, they all started at the first place position when the race started so I think that every character now has at least one rival in the game, whether they were unlockable or not. I can continue figuring out who has who as a rival if it helps. Tails777 Talk to me!

- Ok needs to be said again, There is no rival system in mario kart 8 or deluxe. This discussion happened back when mario kart 8 came out and it was decided that there was none. The ai characters that hang around 1st, 2nd and 3rd are completely random. I've never seen the same ai when doing cups in either game. - Cubeguy(talk)

- I think the rival system pretty much exists and it's very noticeable. I use Bowser, and in the Wii U during Grand Prix, Mario and Luigi always start in 1st and 2nd place. This is the same in the Switch version. I also sometimes play with my aunt (yes, she has the game and plays lmao) who uses DK, and when we play Grand Prix, it's always Bowser and Wario who start at the front. I tested this too in the Switch, and it is indeed those two. I also know Waluihi still has Luigi and Toadette. From what I can tell too, it appears Metal Mario (unsurprisingly) has Pink Gold Peach as one of the rivals in Grand Prix; I never took note of who the other one was strangely, but I was particularly looking out to see if Pink Gold Peach was a rival, and indeed she was (Metal Mario is also one of Pink Gold Peach's rivals).

- One thing that can make the rival system seem inconsistent though is how the CPU characters race in comparison to where they sit in the rankings of a Grand Prix. For example, when I play a Grand Prix as Bowser, Mario and Luigi will always start in the top 2 places, and almost always be behind me if I am in 1st place. However, if (for the sake of argument) Luigi gets hit at the last moment and drops to say, 9th place and finishes there, you will likely never see Luigi again during the Grand Prix unless he somehow makes it back into the top 5 spots (say, gets a Bullet Bill last minute and gets a high placing to boost him back up).
- Essentially, the game always makes sure the characters that are doing well in the total rankings are the ones that are behind you; the game just gives the rival characters priority as of race one; if they start to drop, the game doesn't support them by race two (the rivals).

- If rivals are in it, they shouldn't be titled rivals, they were called rivals in mario kart 7 because they actually were made to fight for 1st position. If anything by the way the ai acts its more of a re-appearing racer or a challenger. The above post describes it best as the game doesn't push for the ai starting in first pole to perform overly well. However since the race ends once the player finish's its hard to actually determine it's behavior. As stated in mario kart 7 they were made to always appear up there regardless of position that the player was in upon finishing. - Cubeguy(talk)

- To be clear, since Mario Kart: Double Dash!! the rivals and other opponents controlled by CPU can change their target place, as stated in a patent on rubber-banding filed by Nintendo. - The use of the word "rivals" can be misleading, but I think that, since this system is basically a tweaked version of MK7's rival system (that is, they are no longer confirmed to do well), and with lack of a better word, we should still use "rivals", as well as continue to mention that they are different from MK7 in the regard that they don't always do well. Item Distribution

Grouping Kart Parts
I think it would reduce some of the clutter on the page if similar kart parts were grouped together. This would not only make the part list consistent with the character stat chart, but would help anyone looking at the chart figure out which parts are clones of each other. In its current form, the chart is very large, and requires a lot of scrolling. It is easily the biggest element in the article, and i do not feel this is necessary and frankly annoying at times. I am aware that the stats shown could be incorrect, so it might be best to consider this change once everyone is confident that the info collected is correct.

- Of course, grouping parts together saves space, the matter is not losing any information - those tables are the ones that introduce all vehicle parts, they are not introduced before. It must be important not to lose any information shown in the current table when doing that, as not only stats are introduced, but also the names and the additional properties, such as those related to color or drift type. In Mario Kart 8, this might make more sense since there are less groups and since inside drifting bikes, which have a different gameplay and thus should be highligthed, are grouped together with different stats with respect to outside drifting vehicles; this was likely done at the time because their turning capability while drifting is way lower. Regarding Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, we sadly have inconsistent Water Speed for the Streetle and Landship pair, so I would wait to have the in-game stats so we can reliably write the stats of the groups.--Mister Wu (talk) 19:07, 11 May 2017 (EDT)

Rivals Changed?
I believe it's a possibility that the latest update has changed some characters' rivals, at least for King Boo. If you look on YouTube, all videos of GP using King Boo (at least the most popular ones) show that he doesn't have a consistent rival. However, based on one of our users' experience with the game (which is more recent than some of those videos - namely after the update), King Boo has a rival in Dry Bones. So, I believe it's possible that King Boo gained a rival after the update - it's possible this may have occurred to other characters. - I can confirm that, not only was Dry Bones not in first place at the beginning of the race when I played as King Boo, but Dry Bones did not appear at all. Weight Class Categories

- I think the issue is with Mario Kart 7 rather than this game: all of the information on this article is accurate to the Prima guide, whereas the Prima guide for Mario Kart 7 doesn't even group the characters into weight classes (and the game doesn't seem to do so either). Stats discrepancy in table vs. dedicated page
A lot of the kart parts have one set of stats in the overall table and then completely different stats when you go their page. For example, the Comet shows 0 Traction in the table but in its page it has -1.25. The Plane Glider and the Paper Glider both have stats in the table, even though their pages say they don't affect anything. Every time I come back to this page I just keep finding more of these.
I'd make the changes myself but I don't know which article to trust, so just leaving this note here.

- I recommend reading what is written before the table of the stats in the dedicated page. The game never worked with stats differences, but rather with Points: each point is a 0.25 increase on the bar, and each part, as well as the driver, contributes their own points to each stat. Essentially, the table in the main page uses the wrong format, as hidden stats are only in points, but since there is a direct correspondence between bar values and points, for convenience we decided to still report the stats in bar values - the ones shown by the vehicle customization menu. The in-game data page on the other hand must reflect the game's data in the way it is stored and used and thus reports the stats in points.--Mister Wu (talk) 21:39, 3 October 2017 (EDT)

What's with the drastic change to the statistics tables for characters and kart parts?

- That's the stats actually used by the game, which allow to properly rate the characters and the various parts, avoiding misleading conclusions. Since people typically see the values of the vehicle customization screen,we added instructions to use the stats of parts and characters and relate them to the values shown in the vehicle customization screen, which shows the stats of the combination as a whole. The color is just used to better distinguish the highest and lowest values you can have with characters or parts' classes.
