In August 2018, Nintendo of Europe organized a series of game competitions as part of the Insomnia63 gaming festival at the National Exhibition Centre near Birmingham, United Kingdom. On August 26, 2018, the third day of the festival, two such competitions were held in Mario Tennis Aces. The first, an open tournament dubbed the Mario Tennis Aces Insomnia63 Open, served as a qualifier for the second competition, the Mario Tennis Aces Tournament Finals.[1]

Both of these competitions were single-elimination tournaments consisting of singles matches with Extended Play duration and KO Loss enabled. The game's standard tennis rules applied, allowing Trick Shots, Zone Shots, Zone Speed, and Special Shots to be performed.[1] According to Nintendo of Europe, matches in the Open tournament were set exclusively on variations of Marina Stadium.[1] The Tournament Finals also largely took place at Marina Stadium, with the exception of one set in the second semifinal, which featured the Bask Ruins court instead.[2]:6:14:35

In order to qualify for the Tournament Finals, a player had to place among the top 8 in the Open tournament.

Tournament Finals

The Tournament Finals were streamed live by Nintendo UK on YouTube and Twitch.[1] This live stream featured presenters Bowie Alexander and Alysia Judge as commentators.[2]:5:23:25note a
