The Luigi Awards
You've heard of the Mario Awards? Welcome to the Luigi Awards! A collection of my favorite games and favorite gimmicks. It is entirely opinionated, ultimately useless, and you have absolutely no say in the matter! Hooray!
The Waluigi Awards
Welcome to the Waluigi Awards! A collection of my least favorite games and gimmicks. Even more pointless.
Worst Storyline - Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam - I have this expression. Sometimes I like to say something was given over to the fans. This feels like it was put into most of the game. The entire premise seems based on the idea of establishing the Marios are in fact different, which itself was pretty controversial. There is no real storyline here, pointless backtracking, very little feeling of progression, other than one of those run around and do and collect a bunch of random **** setups.
Worst Soundtrack - Yoshi's Crafted World - As you may have experienced or known for a while now, the Yoshi games have a bit of a reputation for poorly designed music. In actuality, it makes sense as a game for younger gamers. In fact, it never really bothered me or was that noticeable until after Yoshi's Woolly World. There is a very noticeable change in the quality of the soundtrack, and a sense of most of the effort being put into the level design.
Worst Characters - Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam - Yep. Maybe I'm just biased against this game, but there was a noticeable lack of characters in this game as compared to the previous ones, other than, of course, Toads, and the occasional Yoshi. What happened to the Beanish and Hooskis and Shelltops from the last game? Of course, when you decide to make the setting for a game the Mushroom Kingdom once again, you're bound to have some unoriginal characters.
Worst Tone - Mario & Luigi: Dream Team - I must say, there's not much I actually remember about this game, other than it being very long with tedious moments such as Dreamy Mount Pajama and occasionally fun concepts such as battling the Hooraws. Otherwise, there is unfortunately not much the game has to offer. There are not a lot of memorable moments or characters, sadly.
Worst Ending - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - I was not expecting this. The ending of this game turned out to be predictable and, at the same time, disappointing and depressing. As it turns out, everything the bosses tell you along the way, which I figured would end up relating to the game somehow, ends up being exactly what happens. This may also be the lamest and least subtle foreshadowing I have seen in a game. Not to mention, it ends with the island vanishing, making all of your progress feel meaningless.
Worst Level Design - Super Paper Mario - Don't get me wrong - this is still a great game. The main issue is the level design, which I feel is a reason I feel I quit two walkthroughs after the second world. Particularly, Lineland feels weird having the desert world first, Merlee's Mansion was interesting but had some repetitive elements, Breaking the Bank is very questionable, and certain areas, not excluding the Bitlands, feel blank and unfinished.
