The Glossary is a list of terms and subjects from all topics covered by the Super Mario Wiki. This includes characters, items, locations, concepts, abbreviations, and Wiki terms. If an in-depth article exists for the topic, it will be linked. If something does not appear here, one should search for it and consider adding it to the glossary.

A wiki (Hawaiian for "fast") is software that allows users to create, edit, and link web pages easily. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. They are being installed by businesses to provide affordable and effective Intranets and for Knowledge Management.

The unoffical name for Invincibility Barrels, which are emblazoned with a "!" symbol.

Blocks that appear in place of Dotted Line Blocks of the same color after a ! Switch of the same color has been pressed. They usually contain an item or make up a new path for Mario to traverse.

Beta
a pre-release form of a video game. Beta versions of games are partially playable, but often do not utilize the final enemy placement, textures, or interface.

concepts that appeared in the beta version of a video game, but were cut for the final release.
Big Eight
a conjectural term that groups the major characters of the Mario universe: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Wario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi and Toad. The phrase was coined by the editors of this Wiki but is now considered obsolete.
Brick Blocks
the most basic Block in Mario's, these can be shattered using Koopa Shells or Attacks. Certain Brick Blocks turn into solid metal when struck and release coins or items.

Extended Marioverse
items that are one branch from the Marioverse. Includes series such as Donkey Kong and WarioWare.
Extra Life
Sometimes in the form of a green mushroom or other special object, Extra Lives add back one life to the user's total, negating the loss of a life.

F

Filler Character
a conjectural term used for characters that were created to fill a void. I.e. Waluigi is the opposite to Luigi as Mario is to Wario.
Flower
common plant seen in many Mario games, often as an item.
Flower Point
FP for short, Flower Points are used in the Paper Mario games to do other kinds of attacks.
Fire Flower
a somewhat rare item often used as an attack.
Fourth Wall
when a video game character happens to notice that he or she is in a video game.

Game Over
what happens when all lives are lost.

Heart Points (HP)
a unit of health that varies from game to game. When a character runs out of Heart Points, he or she will pass out. If the character is the last member of his or her battling party, a Game Over occurs. See also: Recovery.
Hexes
An item that is similar to an Orb that changes a space seen only in Mario Party DS.

Life
In platformer games, there are a certain amount of lives that the player has. He or she can lose them by being hit by enemies too much or even gain them by finding extra lives. If the player loses all of his or her lives, a Game Over ensues.

Mushroom
common food in the Mushroom Kingdom, often a basic item.
Mushroom Kingdom
The area where most Mario games take place.

NPC
Abbreviation for "non-playable character." Refers to any character in a video game that cannot be used by the player. Some examples are Bowser and Princess Toadstool in Super Mario Bros.

Player
the person who is playing a game and using the controller.

"Rare" Collectable Figurine
A figurine of Count Cannoli. 65,535 of them exist.
Recovery
The act of restoring one's health, usually through restorative items, such as Coins Mushrooms. Alternate methods include visiting Toad Houses or Inns. In Super Smash Bros. games, the term refers either to reducing one's damage percentage or returning to the stage after being attacked or falling.
RPG
Short for Role Playing Game. Some examples are Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Paper Mario.

Self-Destruct
the act of knocking oneself out in a Super Smash Bros. game. A common example is missing a jump from one platform to the next and falling into the bottomless pit.
Shroobify
in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, anything altered or changed by the Shroobs is Shroobified.
Shroom Kritter (Conjectural Term)
A name for a Kritter who has disguised itself as a Mushroom.
Star
powerful object in the Mario series, often as an item used for invincibility. some Stars are even Artifacts.

"That's My Merlee!" Show
A quiz show hosted by The InterNed that tasks Mario with finding out who is the real Merlee and who is the imposter.
Transformation
the assumption of another form by a character, usually through magical powers or the use of an item, such as a Super Mushroom. Transformations range from a change in size to the assumption of an entirely new identity (see Giga Bowser Transformation).

U

Unlockable
is a character, gameplay mode, item, or other element that can only accessed after completeing a certain task in a video game.

V

Vaporware
a term for games that did start development but never were published.

W

Warp Pipe
the form of transportation in the Mushroom Kingdom. Simply entering the pipe at one end takes the user to the other end.
World -1
A comical term for The Underwhere that is derived from the "World -1" label on the glitched Minus World from Super Mario Bros.
