The Wooden Snake is an item in the PC and SNES releases of Mario's Time Machine. It is a type of asp, which was historically used as a status symbol. In Mario's Time Machine, Mario receives it from one of Cleopatra's guards after traveling back in time to Alexandria. The guard wishes to woo one of Cleopatra's handmaidens by giving her a handcrafted symbol of his love, and gives the Wooden Snake to Mario so that he can deliver it to her. Mario does just that, giving her the Wooden Snake just as she is wondering if the same guard even knows that she exists. Once she sees the snake, she immediately realizes that it is a gift from the guard, and thanks Mario by further answering his questions about Julius Caesar and telling him that Caesar likes Grapes.
