In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi can collect Coins and items from floating blocks -- all throughout the Mushroom Kingdom, both present and past times. There are 4 distinctive types of blocks in the game:

  • ? Block: The basic yellow one, can be striken at any time by anyone.
  • M Block: Same function as the ? Block, but is red in color with white M, indicating that only Mario and Baby Mario can strike it.
  • L Block: Same function as the ? Block, but is green in color with white L, indicating that only Luigi and Baby Luigi can strike it.
  • 4-Bros. Random Block: Has same design as ? Blocks, but is high in the air and requires Piggyback Jump to be struck. When struck, the block will spawn two red and two green blocks, with the letters A, B, X, and Y on them. Each member of the quartet will stand under his appropriate block. The circle of light will go in a random block, and that brother must jump to produce 10-Coins. The circle will then move to another brother's block, and the process continues, eventually getting faster and faster until a brother fails to hit the block, either by taking too long to hit it or or the wrong brother strikes his own block. It is possible to strike the block up to fifty times for total of 500 Coins before it automatically stops.

There are a total of 608 blocks to be found. This page shows the locations of each one and how to get to them. The non-shroobified Peach's Castle in the past is the only location without any blocks.

Additionally, the Bros. have only one chance to collect coins and items from blocks in Koopa Cruiser and the Shroob Mother Ship, as these areas become inaccessible after leaving them.
