Combo fairies are a special kind of fairy that appears only in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. They appear as bright round lights that come in multiple colors, with wings attached. Combo fairies bear a close resemblance to the fairies in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, having nearly the same physical appearance aside from being slightly smaller.
Whenever Donkey Kong performs a combo (a special kind of action, such as swinging from a vine or getting a Jungle Buddy), a combo fairy appears and circles around Donkey Kong until he lands on the ground. Upon him landing, all the collected combo fairies turn into beats. Donkey Kong can obtain more fairies by performing multiple combos with as few repeated actions as possible. There is no limit to how many fairies can circle around Donkey Kong in the game, though the current known maximum is eighteen. Upon him reaching ten combos, the fairies begin to sparkle, and the sound effect that plays when Donkey Kong obtains a combo stops playing.
Throughout the game, there are several ways to obtain a combo, including:
- Swinging from a vine.
- Helibirds.
- Flurl.
- Wall-jumping.
- Bubble Shrubs.
- Leaping off a pop-up flower.
- Jumping off an orange fairy bubble.
- Helper Monkeys.
- Leaping off a vine trampoline.
- Ground-pounding/diving.
- Edge hop.
- Leaping off a chain of Helper Monkeys.
- Entering and exiting a Dragon Pipe.
- Flinging off a Banandelion.
- Firing out of a plant similar to a Bubble Shrub.
- Backflipping.
- Sliding down and jumping off a rope.
