Mainz is the capital city of one of Germany's states, Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as the birthplace and home of Johann Gutenberg. In 1455, Gutenberg neared completion of his printing press when Bowser time travels to the city and steals one of the Metal Types used in Gutenberg's invention. After Bowser leaves the city to place the Metal Type in his museum, Mario takes back the Metal Type and travels back in time to Mainz himself so that it can be returned to Gutenberg. However, since Mario does not know that it belongs to Gutenberg, he must talk to various other people within Mainz about the Metal Type, including a metalworker, a leatherworker, a scribe, and a librarian. After all of them talk at length about Gutenberg, Mario is able to visit him, return the Metal Type, and take his leave, time traveling back to the present day.
