The Rat Trap is an item in the SNES and PC releases of Mario's Time Machine. Rat traps are tools commonly used for capturing rodents, with certain methods killing them in the process. The in-game rat trap resembles a common spring-loaded bar (even though such traps were only created in the nineteenth century). Mario receives one from the boatswain of Ferdinand Magellan's flagship, the Trinidad, after traveling back in time to 1521. The boatswain asks him to deliver it to the cook, who is constantly complaining about a family of rats in the kitchen. Once the cook receives the rat trap, he profusely thanks Mario, saying that he can use a decently sized rat as food now that the ship's rations have deplenished. This leads Mario to ask the cook how the food supply had gotten so low, and the cook explains that the ship has not had fresh food for months.
