This article is about Luigi's move in Super Mario 64 DS. For the spider-like enemy, see Scuttlebug. For Yoshi's move also known as "Scuttle" in the Super Mario 64 DS instruction manual, see Flutter Jump.

Luigi's Scuttle in Super Mario 64 DS

The Scuttle is a move mainly used by Luigi in several games in the Super Mario series. It is similar to Yoshi's Flutter Jump, except that it does not propel Luigi up. Instead, Scuttle will slow Luigi's descent after jumping. This will allow Luigi to reach greater horizontal distances and allows the player to easily control the landing. The animation for the technique is Luigi kicking his feet in the air, which is also similar to Mario or Luigi's fall under the influence of a Mini Mushroom.

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros. 2

In Super Mario Bros. 2 and its remakes, Luigi jumps this way, unlike Mario, Toad, and Peach.

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2

In Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, Luigi jumps like he did in Super Mario Bros. 2, instead of retaining his jump properties from the original version.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

While Luigi always kicks his legs when he jumps (unless he's holding an item) in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, the gameplay effects of this move are only available when the Yellow Switch is active; it is always on in World-e.

Super Mario 64 DS

In Super Mario 64 DS, this move is used with the same controls as Yoshi's Flutter Jump (hold B Button in midair), and can be used to reach the castle roof before all 150 Power Stars are collected.

New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

In New Super Luigi U, the Scuttle technique reappears, letting Luigi move horizontally at a higher altitude. In this game, Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, Nabbit, and Miis can also use this move. In the New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe version of this campaign, Toadette can also use this move.

Super Mario 3D World

In Super Mario 3D World, Luigi kicks his legs during the entire jump, as opposed to kicking them as he descends (reminiscent of its appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2); this reduces his speed both upwards and downwards, making both halves of his jump easier to control.

Super Mario Maker

In Super Mario Maker, Weird Mario has a move similar to Luigi's Scuttle, extending his air time a little longer, however it is only used briefly after jumping and not while falling.

Super Mario Run

Only Luigi himself can scuttle to slow down in Super Mario Run.

Super Smash Bros. series

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Luigi's jumps use a Scuttling animation, as opposed to his jumps in previous games in the Super Smash Bros. series, where they were similar to Mario's.
