1-Up Mushrooms are green mushrooms that give whoever eats one an extra life.
In the sidescrolling games, they move exactly like normal Mushrooms, but look and act different.
In Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS they are the most common mushroom. Though, they are not the only way to gain a life, as collecting fifty coins also grants a life. These mushrooms were the only type of mushroom available in Super Mario Sunshine. These mushrooms are also much smaller.
The Paper Mario series featured a similarly looking mushroom called a Ultra Shroom appeared. Although it looked like a 1-Up Mushroom, they had a different effect as they were the best HP replenishing mushroom. The Life Shroom has a more similar effect and revive a character as soon as they get knocked out. This mushroom looks nothing like the 1-Up Shroom yet has a similar effect.
In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the 1-Up Mushroom revives Mario or Luigi with half of their HP if they run out. There is also a stronger variant called a 1-Up Super, which revives with all HP.
1-Up Mushrooms are said to be one of the rarest mushrooms and are usually very well hidden.
