"King Scoopa Koopa" is the sixth episode of the Super Mario World animated series. This episode could be seen as social commentary on fast food franchises and obesity in the United States, which became a serious issue by the turn of the 21st century. It can also be a commentary on addiction, such as Luigi and Yoshi stealing a treasure chest to feed their unhealthy habit. This episode is notable for being the only episode where a Roulette Block and a Super Mushroom appear. Chronologically, this is the last episode to use Yoshi's original design before being redesigned with a more anthropomorphic appearance that more closely resembles his official game artwork. Despite this, "The Night Before Cave Christmas" (episode 411), produced later than this episode (405), uses his original design.
Plot synopsis
As Princess Toadstool serves lunch to Mario and Luigi, which turns out to be vegetable-filled sandwiches, Mario starts complaining about eating "rabbit-food" again. Subsequently, Mario begins to wonder where Yoshi is, as he never misses lunch. Soon after, a large roar is heard. This roar sends Mario, Princess Toadstool, and Luigi scurrying out of the Dome Castle to investigate.
Outside, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Toadstool see a Rex dressed as a chef parading around a sign displaying the message "GRAND OPENING! SCOOPA KOOPA'S FAST FOOD, FREE SAMPLES." At the prospect of free food, Luigi runs up to the Rex chef and grabs an egg-burger, called an Egg Scoopa Koopa off the chef's plate, which he particularly enjoys because of the egg. However, Mario becomes disgusted due to his dislike of eggs. After Luigi gets his Egg Scoopa Koopa, Mario spots Yoshi in a line-up for food at a small concession stand, which is run by King Koopa himself.
Proceeding to order a large amount of food, Yoshi watches as his meal is assembled by several Rexes and Dino-Torches. As Yoshi's food is being made, Koopa begins to gloat about how he will make himself rich off causing the cave-people to become addicted to his food, and how he cannot wait to see the side-effects from eating too many Egg Scoopa Koopas. Getting his food, Yoshi realizes that he does not have any money. An annoyed Koopa (in his chef's outfit) proceeds to threaten Yoshi, until backing off by the appearance of Mario. Asking how much Yoshi owes, Mario proceeds to give him the apparently unfair sum of eighteen coins.
Leaving Koopa's concession stand, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and Princess Toadstool find a stone table to eat lunch at. Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi scarf down the food with Princess Toadstool refusing to eat anything, not wanting to even touch anything Koopa's had his claws on. After finishing their meals, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, despite being extremely bloated, decide to waddle back to Koopa's concession stand and order seconds.
Several days later, Princess Toadstool visits Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi, who have all gotten fat off King Koopa's food, with the latter two oddly acting somewhat like chickens. The Princess, alarmed at seeing her friends in this condition, forces the three of them to go a diet, by locking them in the Dome Castle, much to their dismay.
Moments after leaving, Princess Toadstool returns to check on her friends, but finds that while Mario is perfectly normal, since he did not eat any Egg Scoopa Koopas, Luigi and Yoshi have been mutated by them, having grown several bird-like features, including wings, which they used to escape (although Princess Toadstool does not believe Mario at first). Watching as his customers line up for food, Koopa begins to realize that once all his customers have mutated into Chickadactyls, he will lose his cash flow. At that point, however, Koopa realizes he can just cook the Chickadactyls and sell them to dinosaurs as "Flew the Koopa's Fried Chickendactyl Stand." After having this thought, Koopa begins to laugh maniacally, stating that he cannot be too rich, or too evil.
Princess Toadstool and Mario manage to track the infected Luigi and Yoshi down and try to knock some sense into them. Unfortunately, Luigi and Yoshi will not listen and resume chowing down. Suddenly, King Koopa appears, claiming there is no way to stop his plan of transforming everyone into Chickadactyls. He then states to several mutated cave-people that Mario and Princess Toadstool plan on taking away their food, leaving the enraged cave-people to attack the fleeing Mario and Princess Toadstool.
Finding a Fire Flower, Mario manages to turn into Fire Mario and defeat several of Koopa's dinosaur minions, though Mario is turned back to normal after being hit by a Rex. Mario and Princess Toadstool are forced to flee to the Star Path as they are being chased by dozens of Chickadactyl-cave-people.
Transported to the ocean, Mario and the Princess manage to evade a Rip Van Fish and enter a nearby Warp Tube. Exiting the Warp Pipe, Mario and Princess Toadstool find themselves in a cave where Koopa has been dumping the garbage from his concession stand. Hitting a nearby Roulette Block, Mario gains a feather and turns into Cape Mario. Climbing-up the Warp Tube garbage-disposal, Mario enters Koopa's kitchen and begins to beat up his henchmen. Using a Dino-Torch as a flamethrower against Mario, Koopa is hit by a coconut thrown by the Princess and manages to escape by jumping down a warp pipe. After Koopa and his minions escape, Princess Toadstool drops the Chickadactyls down the pipe as well. With Koopa gone, Mario destroys the concession stand and orders everyone to return home and eat some vegetables, "Dr. Mario's orders!".
Back home, Luigi and Yoshi, returned to normal, begin eating a healthy meal of vegetables and fruit. Luigi asks Mario to pass the veggies. Mario accidentally tosses the bowl, causing it to shatter. Mario, to his amusement, states that he "just invented the tossed salad".

Animation and continuity errors
- In the original, when Mario says, "We need a plan, quick!" his mouth does not move when he says "quick." This also occurs when he says "...gym socks!" Both occur in the Greek dub, with the former also occurring in the Castilian Spanish dub, and the latter also occurring in the Polish dub and Latin American Spanish dubs.
- When panning over to the restaurant, a cave girl's eyes are mostly closed, and after another cave person throws his money over the counter, it teleports onto it.
- Throughout the episode, the color of King Koopa's Rex minions continually switch every few shots, and in a few shots, one has the head and spine plates of a Dino-Torch.
- The forehead of the Rex that places an egg for an Egg Scoopa Koopa is briefly colored white before turning purple like the rest of its body.
- When King Koopa directs a Rex to take Yoshi's order, the spikes on his tail are colored orange instead of white. This also occurs when Mario and Princess Toadstool run away from King Koopa's Rexes and the transformed Cave People.
- As the camera pans to King Koopa as he gloats how he will become wealthy by making the Cave People become addicted to his food, a Rex is layered over the oven.
- When King Koopa justifies the high price of his food, his face flickers between two very different shapes.
- During the scene in which Princess Toadstool rejects King Koopa's processed food, the amount of fingers each person has on each hand switches between four and five multiple times.
- When Luigi asks Mario if they could get more fast food, the "L" on his cap is missing.
- When Luigi and Yoshi say that they are hungry, Yoshi has four spikes on his back instead of three.
- When Princess Toadstool asks Mario how Luigi and Yoshi were able to escape the castle, her hair switches between being in front of and behind the door.
- When King Koopa watches Luigi and Yoshi exchange their treasure chest for Egg Scoopa Koopas, part of King Koopa's underbelly is the same color as his body.
- When King Koopa imagines his plan to open "Flew the Koopa's Fried Chickendactyl Stand," he can be seen thinking about it within the imagination when one of the dinosaurs eats a drumstick.
- Yoshi's normally yellow wings are green when he and Luigi put down food on a table and before Mario orders to closure of the restaurant.
- In the same scene, he and Luigi speak without moving their mouths after Luigi says he is excited to eat.
- When Princess Toadstool scolds Luigi and Yoshi for trading their chest, Yoshi's eyes are mostly closed.
- When Mario and Princess Toadstool run away from Luigi and Yoshi, Luigi and Yoshi freeze.
- When King Koopa says that his customers and employees might not agree with Mario and Princess Toadstool, his eyes are white instead of yellow.
- When King Koopa says that Mario's friends will be cooked, Mario has four fingers on each hand instead of five.
- When Mario and Princess Toadstool hide behind a building, the emblem on his cap is black instead of red.
- When Mario wipes himself off, his sideburns disappear.
- When the Roulette Block is shown changing between items, there are two yellow blocks in the background, but when Mario jumps up to claim the Cape Feather, the blocks are brown.
- In the same scene, when the Roulette Block shows a Fire Flower, only it is shown, but in the next shot, it is on top of a ? Block. In the shot afterwards, the ? Block disappears.
- When Mario jumps as an attempt to hit the Roulette Block, the item in the block switches, but it stays as a Cape Feather.
- The background falls with Mario after he obtains the Cape Feather even though it does not raise when he jumps to collect it.
- When King Koopa jumps into the Warp Pipe, the bottom of his feet are yellow instead of green.
- When Mario orders the closure of the restaurant, Yoshi appears as his normal self.
- The stack of sandwiches Yoshi eats at the end of the episode reappears in the next shot.
Profiles
- Koopa Kronicles DVD: King Koopa opens a fast food stand, serving Egg Scoopa Koopa sandwiches which are highly addictive and turn his consumers into Chickadactyls!
- Koopa's Stone Age Quests DVD: King Koopa opens a fast food stand, serving egg Scoopa Koopa sandwiches which are highly addictive and turn his consumers into Chickadactyls! Luckily Mario hates eggs. It's up to him and Princess Toadstool to save Luigi, Yoshi and the cave people.
Dub edits
- In foreign dubs, Mario's comment of King Koopa's high price for his food being "highway robbery" is changed to simply "robbery."
- Similarly, Mario's comment of about "gym socks" is changed to simply "socks." This does not occur in the Latin American Spanish dub.
- In the French dub, Mario refers to the vegetables Princess Toadstool gives him at the beginning of the episode as "dog food" instead of "rabbit food."
- In the Latin American Spanish dub, he refers to the vegetables directly.
- In the Castilian Spanish re-dub, he speculates that Princess Toadstool giving him vegetables is a sign she will make him run, without referring to the vegetables.
