They only appear in volcanic areas such as Grim Volcano and Ancient Foundry, and emerge from magma and ceilings. They attack by firing out Black Fairies that form into an attack flying toward Donkey Kong. If it hits him, he loses beats (a heart in the New Play Control! version). Its attack can be repelled by using the Sound Wave Attack to damage the Tar Man; repeating this three to five times in a row will defeat it. Once a Tar Man is defeated, eight bananas will be received.
