Template:Species-infobox Purple Yoshis are a variety of Yoshi that first appeared in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.
History
Yoshi series
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the Purple Yoshi is playable on the fifth stage of each eight-stage world.
Yoshi's Story
Purple Yoshi, with Brown Yoshi, were originally intended to be in Yoshi's Story, but both were removed in the final version. A Purple Yoshi still appears in the intro of Yoshi's Story. Artwork for the Purple Yoshi was also released alongside the game leading people to believe that they were an unlockable character that could be unlocked by collecting every coin in the game and was covered by numerous websites but this rumor was eventually debunked.
Yoshi's Island DS
They reappear in Yoshi's Island DS, with an identical role to that of Yoshi's Island. At the end of the game, Purple Yoshi, along the other Yoshis, with Baby Wario on the back, help defeat Bowser.
Yoshi's New Island
In Yoshi's New Island, Purple Yoshis are again playable on the fifth level of each world. Also, if a Grim Leecher touches any Yoshi color, the Yoshi will turn purple, and the controls will be reversed.
Super Mario series
Super Mario Sunshine
Purple Yoshis appeared in Super Mario Sunshine. Yoshis can turn purple by eating a Durian or a Pepper. While purple, they can spit juice, turning enemies into Yoshi Platforms that move horizontally.
Super Mario Run
Purple Yoshi was made available as a playable character in Super Mario Run following the release of the version 2.0.0 update on March 22, 2017. It can be unlocked after purchasing Purple Yoshi's House from the Kingdom Builder shop, which only becomes available if the player has collected 150 Blue Toads, 150 Green Toads, and 100 Purple Toads.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U
Purple Yoshis make their Super Smash Bros. debut in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U as an alternate color for Yoshi. Like in Super Mario Sunshine, they wear orange shoes.
Paper Mario: Color Splash
A Purple Yoshi appears in Paper Mario: Color Splash in The Emerald Circus, where it is found in a cage along with other wild Yoshis. Once the Yoshis break out of their cage, the Purple Yoshi can attack Mario with its tongue, eating one of his Battle Cards if he doesn't block the attack.
Physical appearance
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Purple Yoshi has purple skin and wears shoes and a saddle that are both orange. These traits were carried over into Yoshi's Island DS and have been the most consistent aspects of its design ever since. However, Purple Yoshi has slight altered appearances for a few games; the Game Boy Advance port of Yoshi's Island and beta artwork of Yoshi's Story feature Purple Yoshi wearing pink shoes, Yoshi's New Island features it wearing red shoes, and Super Mario Run features it wearing light brown shoes.
