“Show me your moves!”
Captain Falcon, Super Smash Bros.

Template:SSB Infobox Captain Falcon (full name Captain Douglas Jay Falcon) is a character from the F-Zero series. He is an F-Zero racer and a secret bounty hunter, with a mysterious past. In the Super Smash Bros. series, he appears as a secret character in the original Super Smash Bros., then returns as a default one in Super Smash Bros. Melee. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he appears as an unlockable character once again. His signature "Falcon Punch" move in the Super Smash Bros. series has become a popular Internet meme.

History

Super Smash Bros. series

In Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, despite being a bit of a slow walker, Captain Falcon has the fastest running speed. His attacks, however, despite being powerful, are slow. The only exception is his attack when repeatedly pressing A Button. In Super Smash Bros., he is an unlockable character, unlocked by beating 1-P Mode in under 20 minutes with any character and then beating him. However, in Super Smash Bros. Melee, he was a default character. He also received the Dash-B Button attack and Raptor Boost in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Captain Falcon has a unique way of using weapons. For example, Captain Falcon sends the Sandbag flying vertically with the Home-Run Bat in Super Smash Bros. Melee's Home-Run Contest. According to the trophy information of the Star Rod, it has the most power when it is used with a Smash Attack of Captain Falcon or Sheik.

Captain Falcon is also unique in that he's had a total of six playable recolors in all the Super Smash Bros. installments, with two of the recolors being team battle exclusive in Super Smash Bros.. Starting with Super Smash Bros. Melee, he is able to use all six of his recolors in free-for-all matches.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Captain Falcon is one of the two default fighters that were unlockable in the previous game, along with Ness. Although, Captain Falcon appears in the Adventure Mode as an enemy as well as All-Star Mode. Captain Falcon appears in Event Matches 12, 17, 20, 33, 36, and 43, and he is one of the random characters in Trophy Tussle 1, 2, and 3.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Captain Falcon

Captain Falcon appears as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but is no longer the character with the fastest running speed; that status being taken by Sonic the Hedgehog. Captain Falcon's fighting techniques are shared with Ganondorf, who has similar abilities, but is slower and has more powerful attacks. Captain Falcon is voiced by Ryo Horikawa.

The Subspace Emissary
Captain Falcon's snapshot in The Subspace Emissary.

In the Subspace Emissary, Captain Falcon saves Captain Olimar from an enormous R.O.B.. Later, he and Olimar save Donkey Kong with the help of Diddy Kong and they join a team with them. After getting through the Subspace Bomb Factory, they meet up with Samus Aran and Pikachu but soon, Ganondorf appears and gets all R.O.B.s in the factory to burn the Ancient Minister and detonate Subspace Bombs to create a giant hole in space. The Minister turns out to be a R.O.B. himself, who joins Falcon's team, and then, after the Subspace Army is taken care of, the whole team decides to leave the area.

Captain Falcon calls his Falcon Flyer and after everyone gets on they all fly to The Canyon where they meet up with everyone else. Before that though, Meta Ridley attacks but he is taken care of. Everyone enters Subspace and find themselves being turned into trophies by Tabuu. King Dedede and his group then arrive and revive Captain Falcon and most of the others until everyone is revived and able to take on Tabuu.

Special Moves

Falcon Punch

The Falcon Punch in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Falcon Punch is an attack that Captain Falcon can use in all Super Smash Bros. games. It is performed by simply pressing B Button. If the player uses this move, Captain Falcon will hold his arm back, charge it up, and then push forward, devastating anyone he hits. However, if Captain Falcon is attacked during the charging process, he will lose focus and he will cancel the attack. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Captain Falcon can turn around during the charge up. If he turns around and succeeds, the Falcon Punch will have more power. The attack is best used when the player is getting up from a previous blow. When Captain Falcon succeeds in the attack, the fire that appears around his hand takes on the shape of a falcon. The player can also hear a falcon squawk when doing this. Ganondorf's Warlock Punch works the same way as Falcon Punch. Kirby will be able to use this move if he uses Swallow on Captain Falcon; Kirby will even say "Falcon Punch" in his high-pitched voice when using the attack.

Raptor Boost

Raptor Boost is a special attack that Captain Falcon is able to use in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The player must tilt Control Stick to the side and then press the special move button. Captain Falcon will proceed to do a very swift punch and hit anyone who gets in the way. He will then send them flying straight up, which can leave them open to use Captain Falcon's Falcon Dive. However, he will stumble and fall forward if he misses his target. If Captain Falcon falls off an edge while using this move, he'll become helpless and will not be able to recover.

If Captain Falcon executes this move in the air, the move will send his opponent downwards, which would make the move act as a Meteor Smash. However, using this move while airborne does leave him helpless afterwords. There is a very similar attack of Ganondorf's, called Gerudo Dragon. However, this attack sends the opponent flying diagonally upwards, regardless of whether or not the move is used in the air or not. Captain Falcon will be put into a helpless state if the move ends in mid-air.

This move isn't exactly a reliable recovery move, since Captain Falcon can't grab hold of any ledges while using it.

Falcon Dive

Falcon Dive is a special move that Captain Falcon can use in all three Super Smash Bros. series. It is executed by tilting Control Stick up, and pushing the special move button. Captain Falcon will then proceed to punch upwards, acting as a third jump. As an added bonus, if he hits an opponent on the way up, he will grab them and cause an explosion, sending the two separate ways and sending the other player flying far. This can even act as fourth jump, if the user succeeds in hitting someone. Captain Falcon will be able to use this attack over and over again in one jump, but only if he manages to hit someone each time. Ganondorf's attack, Dark Dive, is exactly the same as Falcon Dive, but with some differences.

Falcon Kick

Falcon Kick is a special attack performed by Captain Falcon in the Super Smash Bros. series. To execute, the player has to press B Button while tilting Control Stick down. Captain Falcon will then kick across the ground, hurting anyone who is in the way. It can be used on the ground or in mid-air. If performed in the air, Captain Falcon will kick the ground diagonally, depending on which way he's facing, hurting anyone he hits. This can be dangerous if done near an edge. If done on the ground, he will slide across the ground, kicking anyone he comes in contact with. A similar move is Ganondorf's Wizard's Foot.

Blue Falcon

Main article: Blue Falcon

The Blue Falcon is Captain Falcon's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Here, Captain Falcon calls the vehicle once he obtains the Smash Ball, and it drives past at high speed and hits anybody next to the captain. The victims land on a track, where Captain Falcon speeds towards them and runs them over. When returning to the stage, the victims are automatically sent flying. The Blue Falcon is the only Final Smash to feature a cinematic cut-scene. Because it is a Final Smash, the Blue Falcon has its own trophy instead of sharing one with Captain Falcon. It also has a Sticker in the game.

Falcon's style is a balanced combination of raw power and speed. His attacks are slow, but when combined with Falcon's high mobility, he's a formidable combat force. The Falcon Punch packs the highest degree of destructive power, while the explosive Raptor Boost can be used to smash airborne foes into the depths.

Up & B Button: Falcon Dive
Down & B: Falcon Kick
The Knee Smash, used in midair on foes in front of you, is slow and has a short reach, but if it connects, it'll send foes flying a long way on a low trajectory. Falcon uses his Falcon Dive to grab an enemy in midair and fling them away with an explosive blast. He can do this technique repeatedly without landing, so it can also be used as a recovery move.

This is one technique that's an utter mystery.

Trivia

  • One of Captain Falcon's alternate costumes is that of his evil clone, Blood Falcon. He wears his red clothing, and even has a patch on his uniform saying "25 - Blood Hawk", which corresponds to the number and name of Blood Falcon's own F-Zero Racer (which is called "Hell Hawk" in Japan). His All-Star trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee depicts him with this costume. The only difference from this alternate costume and Blood Falcon's design, actually, is the emblem on the helmet, which is still the falcon emblem (Blood Falcon has a skull emblazoned on his helmet, however the skull appears on the back of Captain Falcon's uniform in the same trophy).
  • The Male Wire Frame and Red Alloy were modeled after Captain Falcon, having some of the exact same attacks and similar idle poses.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee, when Captain Falcon uses the Home-Run Bat, he will first thrust forward and then strike upwards, unlike the traditional swing that other characters use. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, however, he swings the bat like the other characters do.
  • Captain Falcon's moves in Super Smash Bros. were loosely based on those of Kamen Rider, a Japanese tokusatsu hero.
  • Captain Falcon, along with several F-Zero and Star Fox characters, was designed by Takaya Imamura. Both series were handled largely by him, as well.
