Coin Edit is an exclusive mode for Coin Battle in New Super Mario Bros. U that allows the player to customize the coin placement in the Coin Courses for other players to play. By using the Wii U GamePad, the player can place coins onto the stage by moving the stylus across the screen, and can remove placed coins by tapping them. The player has a limit of 300 coins and 3 Star Coins, which can be swapped by tapping the icons on the top left of the screen. The player cannot place coins over areas with an "X" mark (generally at the start of a stage/level entrance, over an enemy/enemy generator, or in an inaccessible area) or over other objects in the level (minus the Checkpoint Flag).
Tapping the Options tab at the top of the screen brings down a drop-down menu that allows the player to reset the coins placed, save the edited stage, and leave Coin Edit. The player also has the option to change to another portion of a level by selecting "Change Areas."
