- “So anyway, you should know that the fortune-hunter Wario has inspired many of my strange games! He's always one degree ahead of cool, and he's even let me tag along with on some of his money-grubbing adventures!”
- —Mona, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
Mona is a major human character in the WarioWare series. While still going to high school, she has worked part-time in many establishments in Diamond City, often owned by Joe. Since WarioWare: Twisted!, it seems that she has kept her place at Joe's pizzeria Mona Pizza, though she can still be seen doing other jobs. She first appeared in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! as one of Wario's friends who helped him produce microgames.
History
Background
As revealed by Mona's diary at the official Japanese website for WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, Mona is the daughter of an artist and a supermodel. The artist is Mona's father, while her mother is a busy supermodel who travels the world and doesn't see her daughter often.[1] In a comment by Mona in the blog of the Japanese website for WarioWare: Smooth Moves, it is written that she understands the feelings of Ashley a bit, because Ashley often feels lonely and thinks about her parents, while Mona herself rarely sees her busy mother.[2] The games have yet to make a mention of Mona's family.
WarioWare series
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
First of all, Mona could be seen in the intro of WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, where she was called by Wario to join his "company" WarioWare, Inc. and to produce microgames for his upcoming game. Like Wario's other friends in Diamond City, Mona agreed.
Her own story started with a look at the Gelateria, Mona's workplace in this game. The manager Joe, there known as Gelato Joe, went to his work and opened the roller shutter of the building. He inserted his staff card when it was 7:53 a.m. and Mona's working time had to begin at 8:00.
The scenery changed and Mona could be seen driving her red scooter through various landscapes of which isn't known if they belonged to Diamond City or were just areas close to the city. At one point of the street Mona had to stop because a large group of children passed the street. While she waited, Mona was shocked to realize that it was already 7:55. After the children passed the street, Mona continued to drive at a very high rate of speed. However, she drove past a car of the Diamond Police. The police noticed her speeding and chased her. To get rid of the police, Mona asked her animals for help. She pressed a button on the handlebar of her scooter and the hatchway on the back of the scooter opened up. Her tiny Elephant popped out and fired sludge at the police car so it had to stop. But already a new police car appeared behind Mona. Again, the hatchway opened and her Piggy popped out. It kicked a soccer ball at the car, so it had to stop as well. However, now a whole fleet of cars of the Diamond Police chased Mona. In the last resort, Mona asked her Monkey (then known as Chimp) for help. It popped out of the scooter and threw a banana peel at one car. When it passed over the peel, it turned upside down. To aim better at the police cars, the Chimp put its hi-tech goggles on.
A lot of thrown banana peels and knocked out police cars later, Mona could finally escape from the Diamond Police. She reached the Gelateria and ran into it to insert her staff card. When she did it, it was 7:59, and only about two seconds later it was 8'o clock. Her employer Joe was very happy that she eventually managed to come to work just in time. She put on her uniform and begun to sell gelato.
Mona also made an appearance in the ending story of the game, where Wario represented his employees in the WarioWare headquarters that they wouldn't get anything of the money he earned with the game he and his friends made. Mona called Wario a "greedy punk" and then he escaped. She was shocked and unlike the other employees, she chased after Wario, but she couldn't catch him. Wario could escape from the headquarters with a rocket attached to the building.
In an unlockable two-player minigame called VS Dong Dong in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, Mona is the character of the player who has to use the L button, while the other player's character is Dribble. The unlockable minigame Paper Plane features Mona as one of the characters looking through a window and telling the current flight time.
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!
In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!, Mona changed her place of employment. Now she worked as a waitress at the restaurant Sora Sora. She drove her scooter to her workplace and hit a soccer ball while driving. The ball flew directly into the headquarters of WarioWare, Inc. and hit Wario's television set. For some reason, now Mona's Elephant could be seen on the television screen.
An indefinite time later, Wario and the WarioWare employees dined at the restaurant and were introduced by Mona in her uniform.
Mona is one of the ten selectable characters in the multiplayer games in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!.
WarioWare: Twisted!
In the intro of WarioWare: Twisted!, Mona came along with 9-Volt to Dr. Crygor's lab. There, Dr. Crygor tried to fix Wario's broken Game Boy Advance with his invention, the Gravitator. But it had no buttons anymore after the repairing, instead of that the player had to move the system to move the character in the game. Mona and 9-Volt tried it out and enjoyed it. Wario got the idea to make a new WarioWare game involving this style of gameplay.
Mona changed her workplace once again. Now, she was employed at Mona Pizza, a pizzeria owned by Joe, there known as Pizza Joe. Mona Pizza became a serious rival company to Pizza Dinosaur, a huge restaurant chain. In Mona's story, a customer called Pizza Dinosaur only to tell them that he actually wanted to call Mona Pizza. The employees of Pizza Dinosaur, the Dinosaurs, got mad and used their dinosaur machines to attack Mona, who delivered pizzas at the time. While Mona's Elephant and Pig couldn't stop the machines, her Monkey threw a banana peel on the road again, so the dinosaur machine flipped and Mona could eventually deliver the pizzas.
WarioWare: Touched!
In WarioWare: Touched!, Mona became the bassist of a rock band called "Mona and The Hot Slices". "The Hot Slices" were actually Art and Deco, two very different looking musicians. While Mona played the bass guitar, the yellow, slightly bear-like Deco rapped and the small, dark-gray and slightly imp-like Art played a banjo.
In Ear Candy, a television show of the channel DBS, Ken the VJ announced that Mona and her sidekicks reached the top of the record charts and displaced the pop singer Vanessa from the first place, who performed with the Dinosaurs as the background guitarists. He also told that Mona will have a gig at the Hawt House. Vanessa watched the show and got hopping mad along with the Dinosaurs about it. They released a flying, bird-like vehicle to hinder Mona and her friends reaching the Hawt House.
At this time, Mona, Art and Deco were doing their last music probes at Mona Pizza before their gig. Also the in a garbage can living Garbage Boy protuted his head out of his garbage can when the band played music. When they were done, Mona drove her scooter towards the Hawt House, Art and Deco followed her in a van with Mona's logo on it. While they were on their way, suddenly Vanessa and the two employees of Pizza Dinosaur appeared on motorcycles and hampered the trio. Then Vanessa drove towards the Hawt House while the Dinosaurs hopped into the bird-like vehicle, which took off and flew directly over Mona, Art and Deco. A grabber came out of it and kidnapped Art. Mona called her animal friends for help, who came in small propeller aircrafts, but they were kicked away by the machine of the Dinosaurs. Even Pizza Joe arrived in a similar aircraft, but he was kicked away as well. The last helpers were 4.1 and 4.2, who flew in some sort of spherical flying vehicle, who was able to shoot soccer balls at the Dinosaur's machine, but also the last helpers failed. However, Deco got the idea to activate a kind of ejection seat of the van. After he turned over the lever to activate it, he was ejected at the Dinosaur's machine, made it releasing Art and falling down finally. Now the band had lost a lot of time and they had to hurry to their gig.
At the Hawt House, the fans were already waiting for the appearance of their stars. Then a speaker announced the gig of "Mona and The Hot Slices" and they came on the stage and rocked the house. Vanessa, who was also present at the Hawt House, got very angry. However, Mona realized that she has to deliver pizzas and so she left the Hawt House with her bass guitar and drove away on her scooter. While Art and Deco stopped to play and were embarrassed, Vanessa got an idea. Garbage Boy, who seemed to appear at every performance of the band, wanted to heat up the atmosphere and went to the microphone, but there he was kicked away by Vanessa, who got on the stage. She wore a wig on her head which looked like Mona's hairdo, plus a hat similar to Mona's. Vanessa described herself as Mona, but she couldn't trick the public. The people booed and threw various things at her.
WarioWare: Smooth Moves
In WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Mona worked as a cheerleader. She drove her scooter to the football stadium of Diamond City, but for unknown reason she was late again and so she drove directly into the stadium. There she served as the leader of the other, blond-haired cheerleaders called the Monettes for the Diamond City Roughs, who played against Team Dinosaur, a football team that, at the least, was inspired by Pizza Dinosaur. One of the players of the Diamond City Roughs had fallen in love with Mona and kept her in mind, but he gathered himself to focus on the football game instead. The game was announced by Ken the Reporter and, surprisingly, also by Joe.
When only a few seconds of the game were left, the player who loved Mona got the football and had to pass three members of Team Dinosaur. The thought of Mona gave the player the motivation to hit the Dinosaurs away and to make a touchdown. At the end, the Roughs had won the game.
After the game, the player wanted to confess Mona his love in her, but he stuttered, and when he was done with his confession, Mona did already drive away. Instead of Mona, he said it to one of the other cheerleaders who passed him. The cheerleader was shocked.
Mona did also appear in the story of Young Cricket and Master Mantis, where she served dumplings along with Joe. They got the help of Mona's animals and Art and Deco. Mona's Bear also made his first appearance, even though it was only a very brief one.
She worked as an editor of Wario's one-shot news paper "The Weekly Wario" as well. She described herself as a Form Baton expert.
WarioWare: Snapped!
In WarioWare: Snapped!, Mona ran the newly opened Wario Park along with Wario, Jimmy T., and Kat and Ana.
WarioWare: D.I.Y.
In WarioWare: D.I.Y., Mona and Joe, the latter one acting as a cameraman, explored an ancient building in Indiana Jones style, which they found after a trip through the jungle. Mona, holding the microphone, reported on their adventure on the show Mona Tankentai (lit. "Mona Exploration Team").
Mona, along with Jimmy T., 9-Volt, Orbulon and Ashley apparently left WarioWare Inc. to work for Diamond Software in this game. Though the reason they switched companies is unknown, various residents of Diamond city consider possibilities in the DIY Forums feature of the game.
Game & Wario
In Game & Wario, Mona works at the Diamond City Times as a photojournalist, taking pictures of criminals at the scene of a crime. She hosts the minigame "Shutter" which involves taking images of the hidden criminals from the buildings and streets.
Mona, along with most other characters in the game, also appears in the Bowling minigame, as a bowling pin.
Mona is featured as the subject of several Cluck-A-Pop capsules, collectively named Mona Superscoop. These capsules feature Mona sharing various information about life in Diamond City and its residents. She is also featured in the "Beauty Magazine" capsule. In it, Mona takes a photo of the player's face, which then has various silly filters applied over it.
Mona's Animals
As seen in all games of the WarioWare series, Mona owns some different animals. They often help her against her pursuers. All animals are small in size and each one wears a shirt with a number on it. Because it isn't clearly known where Mona lives, it is unknown how she keeps her animals as well. Her animals are the following:
- Mona's Elephant (No.1): An upright walking blue elephant which is very tiny for its species. It is able to shoot sludge and soccer balls from its trunk.
- Mona's Pig (No.2): An upright walking pig. It can kick soccer balls.
- Mona's Monkey (No.3): A brown monkey wearing hi-tech goggles. Mona's Monkey throws banana peals and its goggles allow it to aim better at its target.
- 4.1 and 4.2: Their species isn't definitely identifiable, but they are brown and have pointed ears and whiskers. They differ from the other animals, because they look a bit more humaniod and are able to speak as well. 4.1 and 4.2 are capable of controlling a spherical vehicle shooting soccer balls.
- Mona's Bear (No.5): This small gray bear only made a brief appearance in WarioWare: Smooth Moves so far. Nothing more is known about it.
Microgames
Mona comes with an own set of microgames in all games of the WarioWare series.
For WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, Mona created microgames of the Strange genre. All games involve mostly everday things in a strange way, like brushing the teeth or plugging a finger into a nose. WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$! does also feature Mona's strange microgames, plus a multiplayer game made by her, Listen to the Doctor, which is very strange as well.
Mona's microgames in WarioWare: Twisted! involve a particular style of gameplay rather than a specific visual theme, which was also continued for the next games in the series until WarioWare: D.I.Y.. In this game, her set of microgames is called Mini Spin and requires small spins and perfect precision.
In WarioWare: Touched!, the name of Mona's set of microgames is Cute Cuts and involves slicing things with the Stylus.
In WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Mona's set of microgames involves the forms The Remote Control, The Handlebar and The Umbrella.
In Mona's five microgames in WarioWare: Snapped!, the player has to line up with objects on the screen. She adds stylish decorations to the photos taken of the player after the end of her stage.
In WarioWare: D.I.Y., Mona returns to her original role and hosts a new set of Strange microgames again.

Trivia
- Mona was the first WarioWare developer to appear in 3D, after Wario himself, of course. In the movie "Shiner Diner" in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!, Mona can be seen driving her scooter partly in 3D.
- In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! one of Mona's outfits depicts her wearing Wario's plumber attire during the intermission between her microgames.
- Additionally in WarioWare: Touched! she can be seen again, wearing Wario's Biker outfit, except with a few minor alterations, such as her pink skirt replacing Wario's pink pants, and lack of a helmet.
- In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!, Mona's theme melody is based on the music that can be heard while visiting Princess Shokora's item shop in Wario Land 4. The music can also be heard in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! in a less modified form when the Gelateria is seen from inside during Mona's story.
- In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mona is a Sticker that raises resistance by four. Also, one of the names that can be gotten from pressing the "RANDOM NAME" button is "MONA".
