Mario must have collected 8 or less coins to access this variation. Mario will start on a platform at the bottom of the screen. This area consists entirely of short sloped platforms with a bottomless pit stretching across the entire area. Mario will also find may red Koopa Paratroopas throughout the level. At the end of the area, there is a flat platform at the side of the mountain and a Warp Pipe leading into the next area.
This area will have some Dino Rhinos and Dino-Torches. Depending on how many Coins the player has collected, or how fast they clear the first area, the next area will be different. If the player is going to take the coin-collecting route, then they must collect all the coins found on this stage, including all the coins from the Multiple Coin Block and the Dragon Coins, in under 250 seconds and enter the pipe. They will then be taken to an area in which they will have to collect some, but not all of the coins from flying around here, and the Dragon Coin here is mandatory to collect, which will lead the player to the place with the Key. If the player collects all the coins from the first route, and the timer is under 250, then they will be taken to a place with many Rexes and a few Piranha Plants over here. After this, the player will go on too the normal route, leading to a place with many Mushrooms and Cheep-Cheeps trapped in Bubbles. In the next area, a huge platform with many Rexes will be seen, along with the Giant Gate, which will lead a normal exit to Chocolate Island 3. For the time route, the player must exit through the first area quickly. In the next area, Koopa-Paratroopas can be seen flying around. The player will have to jump from cliff to cliff, avoiding these enemies, and exit through the pipe in under 250 seconds. If done so correctly, the player will now be in the room with the Key and Keyhole. A couple of Chargin' Chucks can be found here, and will throw baseballs at the player. Red, Green, and Blue ! Blocks can also be found here. Once the player uses the Key inside the Keyhole, they will now have access to Chocolate Secret.

;Variation C
Mario must have collected 9-20 coins to access this variation. Mario will start the area on a flat platform. There is a Question Block containing a coin in front of the Warp Pipe. Mario must run up the gentle slope, avoiding the Rex. He will find a stack of three platforms with Rexes on each of them, which he must avoid. Then, Mario must jump across several bottomless pits, using narrow platforms and springboards to cross over them. Then, Mario will find another stack of three platforms. Mario must get to the top of this stack of platforms and jump across two Warp Pipes, avoiding Jumping Piranha Plants. After traversing the next platform, Mario will find yet another stack of three platforms. This time, there will be a stack of three Question Blocks next to these platforms, the block on the top containing a power-up. The Warp Pipe leading to the next area can be found right after the stack of platforms.

Area 3
This area is affected by the amount of time on the timer that the player has left.

;Variation A (Secret Exit)
Mario must have 250 seconds or more left on the timer to access this area. This area consists mostly of a long, flat platform. There are several Chargin' Chucks found throughout the area. There will also be piles of blocks on the ground and two yellow Warp Pipes. Exclamation Mark Blocks of all four colors can be found above the ground. After Mario gets past all of these obstacles, he will find a staircase-like platform with a key and keyhole.

;Variation B
Mario must have 234-249 seconds left on the timer to access this area. Mario starts out on a jagged platform with several Dino Rhinos and Dino-Torches walking toward him. A Dragon Coin can be found floating above the ground. After Mario traverses this Dragon Coin, he will find a Warp
Pipe leading to the next area.

;Variation C
Mario must have 234 or less seconds left on the timer to access this area. The entire area consists of narrow platforms with water filling in the pits between them. There are no enemies here; instead, there are swarms of Super Mushrooms found in bubbles. A Dragon Coin can be found floating above the water. At the end of the level, there is a Warp Pipe leading to the next area.

Area 4
This area is affected by the amount of Dragon Coins that Mario has collected throughout the level.

;Variation A
Mario must have 3 or less Dragon Coins collected throughout the level to access this level. This area has grassy platforms with many bottomless pits. Mario starts out on a flat platform in front of the Warp Pipe. First, Mario must use the springboard to jump across a wide bottomless pit. Then, on the next platform, Mario will find a stack of five platforms with Rexes on each of them. After Mario gets past these hazards, he will find the Giant Gate.

;Variation B
Mario must have at least 4 Dragon Coins collected throughout the level to access this area. Mario will start out on a grassy platform with two Rotating Blocks. There will be rows of coins suspended above a wide bottomless pit. Mario must hit the P-Switch at the end of the grassy platform to turn these coins into Used Blocks, which Mario must quickly traverse to cross the pit. Alternatively, if Mario has activated all four colors of Exclamation Mark Blocks, he can simply use the long row of blocks below the coins to cross the gap. At the end of the path, there is a Dragon Coin and a Giant Gate.
