Issue XXVII | June 10th, 2009 | About |
|
Welcome to the premiere issue of "Mario, non-Mario" this month it will be Navi Vs. F.L.U.D.D.
FLUDD
He's a invention of E. Gadd that you first meet in Delfino Airstrip and he helps you trough the game you'll be practically lost without him, he also gives you hints but if this isn't enough he also has the turbo and rocket nozzles though it's a vital help sometimes it's hover nozzle let you the game very easy
NAVI
she's a fairy that is sent by the Great Deku Tree to alert Link and as you advance in the game she will join you and be your partner she helps you to point something (yeah I know it sounds a little bit strange but in Zelda games point can help) also she gives hints like FLUDD but if you have played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time like me you will know that her hints do not help too much and sometimes her high pitched voice is disgusting also she makes a cameo in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii version) as the pointer of the Wii remote but she doesn’t do something of the story of the game
If you wanna know who wins this month click "show"
WINNER<showhide>__HIDER__<hide>FLUDD
Navi is a good partner but FLUDD is even better they both give advices but in my opinion FLUDD's are better and he also helps you more if I get the change to have a FLUDD or a Navi I'll select the FLUDD
Score
In all the issues I'll put a score card like this if a Mario character wins Mario will have a point and vice versa
Mario: 1
Non-Mario:0
Well for the premiere issue Mario is at head but there are still too many characters to compare so wait 'till next issue

Hello to all of you people reading the Classic Review! For the next 3 weeks I will be doing the Donkey Kong Country series. This is to compare each game to each other. This week I am doing the original Donkey Kong Country, which came out in 1994. In the game, King K. Rool has stolen every banana in Donkey Kong's Banana Hoard on Donkey Kong Island. Donkey Kong (and his friend Diddy Kong) must get his bananas back by chasing King K. Rule down to get to ship. There is also DKC (Donkey Kong Country) for the GBA (Game Boy Advance).
Story
I think that there could have been a better story line. I mean that there are a lot more important things in life than bananas. But then again, it is a Monkey we’re talking about.
Game play + Graphics
I think the graphics were completely at an average level. It was hard to get to a save point (for the SNES game) because, if you didn’t have it in a level already, you had to first find a “Funky Flights” and then fly to a save point in another level. If you didn’t have a “Funky Flights yet in the level, you would have to play without saving. Isn’t that great?
Characters, Enemies, and Worlds
I liked the idea of animal buddies helping you on the way. I also like the fact that you could visit all the Kongs on the map. Between the animals and Kongs, there was a fair amount of characters. There were a wide variety of Kremlings and non-Kremling enemies in DKC. From Gnaughty the beaver* to Klump and From Zinger the bee to Kritter, a wide variety. All of the Bosses were overgrown enemies. I liked that idea, but it could have been better.
There were 9 level themes. Jungle, Cave, Underwater, Mine, Temple, Forest, Tree Top, Snowy, and Factory (not what there really called). I think there could have been more. I liked how each level had bonus levels hidden well.
Music
This game had outstanding music. I loved bonus theme. One of my favorite parts for liking this game is the music.
Scoring
- Story=7/10
- Game Play=6/10
- Graphics=8/10
- Characters=9/10
- enemies=9/10
- Worlds=8/10
- Music=10/10
Overall=8.142857 So now we have our DKC score. Stay tuned next month for DKC2!
*Fun Fact: Gnaughty the Beaver appearded in the 9th level of "Banjo Kazooie", "Click Clock Woods", but he was an allie of you.
Two months ago, we took a look at MOTHER3 for GameBoy Advance. Well, this month, we’ll be reviewing the first game of the series -- EarthBound Zero, also known as MOTHER in Japan. I was running out of ideas and figured I should just submit it now. Enjoy!
Plot
EB Zero has arguably one of the best storylines on the NES. At the start of the game, you are told about a man and a woman by the names of George and Maria. One day, a dark shadow covered their house and the young couple suddenly vanished. Two years later, George returned. But, he began studying an odd topic -- PSI. 80 years have passed since then, and you now take control of a youth named Ninten as strange occurences happen within your house and your neighborhood. Much about the married couple, who turn out to be Ninten’s great-grandparents, are revealed throughout the course of the game. Your main objective: find the scattered Eight Melodies, eight tunes which will complete a very important song. While we don’t get to see the personalities of characters much (mostly just those within your party), there is still lots of emotion in the plot of the game.
EarthBound Zero broke a lot of ground for most RPG’s at the time, similar to what StarTropics did. Instead of a bunch of generic RPG-style weapons, such as swords, daggers, etc. -- we get psychic powers and baseball bats. The unusual and quirky humor of the game has become a staple of the MOTHER series.
Gameplay
Flawed, but still close to perfection. While you travel about with your two friends (that’s right, only two can be in your party at a time) -- you will randomly encounter enemies. The battles are relatively plain and can most of the time be finished rather quickly. However, the simplicity is a good thing -- random encounter fights can become repetitive if areas are prone to lots of strong opponents. However, the difficulty can become almost ridiculous at times -- Itoi (game designer and director) himself stated that the last portion of the game didn’t have its difficulty tested, and many players gave up. A few select parts also suffer from repetition and almost unbeatably strong enemies. All-in-all however, EB Zero has clever gameplay, but the difficulty has turned some people away from playing it. Which is a shame.
Graphics
No doubt, the graphics of EB Zero are among the best on NES, along with Kirby’s Adventure (which came out four years later). The landscape feels more cartoony and less realistic like the old Final Fantasy backgrounds. Rivers and oceans look almost like soda with their sparkly, bubbliness. Characters graphics are simple, but they fit in just right with the games’ look. Enemy sprites are all well drawn and stand out from the rest, from the Starman to Wally -- everything just looks flat-out good, especially when you consider the games’ time. It just goes to show you simplicity and heavy details are two totally different styles that can both be enjoyed individually.
Sound
The sounds heard in EarthBound Zero are few, just like other NES games because of limited memory, but memorable and have left a remarkable impression on gamers everywhere. Many people know the tune of Pollyanna, or maybe Bein’ Friends and of course the Eight Melodies. All the tracks in the game are good and fit their atmosphere. Various tracks have been remixed years later and some even had words put to them! However, because the towns don’t have their own, unique themes (if you have a friend with you, all towns will play Bein’ Friends), the music can get a bit repetitive sometimes. But even that does not occur too often. Truly EB Zero’s music should live down as a legend.
Replay Value
EarthBound Zero is surprisingly long for an NES game. There are lots of places to see and lots of events that take place, but few boss battles. Because of the length and difficulty, this game is not amazingly fun to replay, but it still entertains. New strategies can be found out, new secrets uncovered, etc. -- the game boasts such an enormous world, you can get lost in exploration easily. It’s even possible to beat the games’ final boss without the help of friends. No matter what you decide to do when you replay EB Zero, you’ll still have fun with it.
Contribution
In a way, this game could be considered the most contributary to the entire series because it’s the first game. This game is contributary to RPG’s, if not gaming as a whole also. The story is a timeless masterpiece, along with the music. It may not be the best of the MOTHER series, but I can definitely tell you it’s the most overlooked. So look around for this game on the internet for download, if you want!
Final Words
- Plot - 10/10
- Gameplay - 9/10
- Graphics - 9.5/10
- Sound - 9.3/10
- Replay Value - 8.5/10
- Contribution - 9.7/10
- OVERALL - 9/10

- Yoshario You....you don't know?
- Yoshario Okay.
- Super__Macho__Man I originally had another account, but in 2007, I came back as King Boo, then changed my name to Master Lucario.
- Yoshario Interesting.
- Yoshario Next question:
- Yoshario Did ever you get a welcome and by whom?
- Super__Macho__Man Yes. I was welcomed by The Missing Link, known as Dry Bones at the time.

Match Game
The Match Game was a huge success! In the future, we will play the game live on #mw-shroom.
(Match Game theme plays)
Narrator: Get ready to match the stars!...Dick Barton!...Brett Summers!...Gary Bergoff!...Maryann Mobley! (crowd laughs)...Richard Dawson! And Patty Deutsch! As we play the star-studded, big-money Match Game 75! And here's your host, Gene Rayburn!
(The crowd applauds.)
St00by: No-ho, not those stars! You'll match the MarioWiki stars, with your host, Ralphfan, on the MarioWiki Match Game.
Ralphfan: Thanks, everyone for coming out to our premiere episode here at the Sam's Tailor Shop Auditorium; a great crowd on here tonight, we've even got fans standing in the aisle!
(The crowd cheers.)
Ralphfan: Let me explain how this game works. The participants are gonna get a sentence with a blank on it or a question. They will then have to answer the question or fill in the blank. Every time a contestant's answer is "matched" by a judge, they get a point. Whoever gets the most points wins the fabulous prize-
St00by: Prize is not that fabulous.
Ralphfan: So, let's meet our judges! We have me, Hyper Guy, Luigifreak, Tucayo, and St00by in our center square as we mix our game show metaphors.
(More applause.)
Ralphfan: I'm proud to announce that we have a lot of eccentric season ticket-holders, so let's meet our favorite charcters. He brings out the questions, it's Sparky the Pig!
Sparky: Snort snort snort.
Ralphfan: Sparky wants to make it clear that he doesn't have swine flu and that you can't get it from being near pigs. Next we have Sparky's backup, plus one of my favorite friends, his name is Larryhorse!
Larryhorse: LARRYHORSE!
Ralphfan: Thanks, Larry, and I must say, your grilling skills are terrific; I simply love your tri-tip. Next up, everyone's favorite demented redneck, it's Joe Nolan, come on out here, Joe!
Joe Nolan: HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Ralphfan: All right, Joe. Next, one of our most dedicated fans, he comes out to here in San Diego every week all the way from Montreal for this, it's Pierre!
Pierre: Ooh la la!
Ralphfan: All right, and it's America's favorite stuffed animal, Baby V!
Baby V: Squeak squeak squeak!
Ralphfan: Thanks, Baby, and if I'm not mistaken, the Woodrow Wilson Cheerleaders are here tonight, are you here, girls?
Cheerleaders: Yeah!
Ralphfan: Okay, then, let's get down to it. It's time to meet our contestants. Our first contestant is Yoshi Boo 118! How's it going?
(The crowd applauds.)
Yoshi Boo 118: Doing fine...I'm ready.
Ralphfan: Next, it's our alternate, who will win the fabulous prize-
St00by: Prize is not that fabulous.
Ralphfan: Actually, it is sort of fabulous. It's a lifetime supply of juice, and it was recommended by our alternate, who never agreed to play but he never disagreed either; he does still talk to me even though he retired; he'll win the prize in the event of a tie for doing absolutely nothing; it's DOM!
(The crowd goes insane, chanting "DOM! DOM! DOM! DOM! DOM!" and security has to prevent a riot.)
Dom: Hi. I've got Duckstealer McDucks here. He says he's innocent.
Ralphfan: All right then. Now here's our second contestant, it's Pink Boozooka!
(The crowd applauds.)
Pink Boozooka: I'm doing fine; I'll be even happier if I win!
Ralphfan: OK, here's our first question, Sparky, please?
(Sparky brings the question.)
Sparky: Snort snort.
Ralphfan: Thanks, Sparky, here goes:
Recently, some pirates have been active in the Indian Ocean. The U.S. Navy has responded by saying they are in the process of developing a gun that can shoot accurately from a mile away. Lots of pirates got scared when they heard this, but BLANK is quaking with fear.
(The Match Game theme plays.)
Ralphfan: Ding when you have your answers, judges.
Ralphfan: Ding!
Luigifreak: Ding!
Tucayo: Ding!
St00by: Ding!
Hyper Guy: Ding!
Ralphfan: Ok, Yoshi Boo 118, what's your answer?
Yoshi Boo 118: Cortez.
Ralphfan: Pink Boozooka, and you?
Pink Boozooka: Blackbeard.
Ralphfan: Well, I got Cortez!
Trumpet: Dun-dun!
Ralphfan: FYI, the dun-dun was for YB118. St00by, what say you?
St00by: I also said Cortez!
Trumpet: Dun-dun!
Ralphfan: That's two! How 'bout you, Tucayo?
Tucayo: I said Captain Hook.
Trumpet: Waa-waa!
Ralphfan: Luigifreak?
Luigifreak: I said Chuck Norris.
Trumpet: Waa-waa!
Ralphfan: Interesting answer and Hyper Guy, you had?
Hyper Guy: I got Jonathan Jones.
Ralphfan: Good answer...
Trumpet: Waa-waa!
(The theme stops playing.)
Ralphfan: But not a match. So, Yoshi Boo 118 is up 2-0!
Ralphfan: I just wanted to mention that Tanokki and Paper Jorge said they would be able to participate, but they didn't. It absolutely broke our hearts, Larry was crying!
Larryhorse: LARRYHORSE!
Ralphfan: Ok, now to the second question, Sparky?
...
Ralphfan: Where's Sparky?
Tucayo: His taquitos just arrived.
Ralphfan: Come on, Sparky, you can eat later.
Sparky: Snort snort.
Ralphfan: Don't cop that attitude with me!
Tucayo: Larry's not eating, he can do it.
Ralphfan: Larry?
(Larryhorse brings the question.)
Larryhorse: LARRYHORSE!
The economy continues to fall. This isn't just on Earth, it's happening in the Marioverse, too. People are so cash-strapped, they can't even afford BLANK.
(The theme starts again.)
Tucayo: Ding!
St00by: Ding!
Ralphfan: Ding!
Hyper Guy: Ding!
Luigifreak: Ding!
Ralphfan: Okay, guys, what've you got?
Pink Boozooka: I said Paper.
Yoshi Boo 118: I was thinking a little out-of-the-box; I said Dried Shrooms.
Ralphfan: Well, I said Mushrooms.
Trumpet: Waa-waa!
Tucayo: I said a sig.
Trumpet: Waa-waa!
Ralphfan: Well, that's...an unusual answer. Hyper Guy?
Hyper Guy: I said Mushrooms.
Ralphfan: Well, that matches me! That deserves a dun-dun!
Trumpet: Dun-dun!
Ralphfan: So, Pink Boozooka is down 2-0 and he needs the next two to tie. We go to Luigifreak, who said people can't afford...
Luigifreak: Along the lines of health insurance, I said Life Shrooms.
Trumpet: Waa-waa!
Ralphfan: Great answer; however, it doesn't do Pink Boozooka any good; Yoshi Boo 118 will win, but the over-under was 2.5, so we need to know what St00by said:
St00by: I said Dried Shrooms!
Trumpet: Dun-dun!
(The theme stops playing.)
Ralphfan: Wow! St00by matches 118 both times! 118, you've won our fabulous prize, 3-0!
St00by: Prize is not that fabulous.
Yoshi Boo 118: Great!
Ralphfan: Well, you get to match me for the bonus round, but I have to warn you, the bonus prize really isn't fabulous. It's a lifetime supply of the parasols, you know, the little umbrellas you put in your juice. Just fill it in; Free BLANK.
(The theme begins again.)
Ralphfan: Ding!
Yoshi Boo 118: I said free food.
Ralphfan: We'll have to ask a higher power about this one; I said free juice. Larry, is it a match?
Larryhorse: LARRYHORSE!
Trumpet: Waa-waa!
(The theme stops playing.)
Ralphfan: Well, yes, I see your thinking, Larry, it shouldn't be; juice is a drink-Sparky, calm down!
Sparky: Snort snort!
Ralphfan: This is why Larry does these jobs.
Larryhorse: LARRYHORSE!
Ralphfan: Well, folks, that's all the time we have, so make your way out the west exit for free juice. Goodnight, everyone!
(The crowd applauds.)

Fake Games
- "Wario Ware: Fat Fighters!" Is a game which involves several microgames based
on being healthy. Wario was too fat to be a character, so he has been replaced by Sonic The Hedgehog. One minigame features Dr. Crygor inventing a machine that could eliminate all fatty products, but he gets stuck in it and turns into a skeleton Dr. Crygor, complete with a new gray helmet.
- "Yoshi Touch 'n' Die" is the sequel to Yoshi Touch 'n' Go, this time with
Yoshi dying if you touch him. How you are supposed to play it, nobody knows.

Interview
by Ralphfan (talk) Today's guest is Yoshi!
Ralphfan: Yoshi, how's it going?
Yoshi: Fine, thanks.
Ralphfan: I know you are with Birdo, but I hear Petey has a thing for her.
Yoshi: Hang on.
Yoshi steps outside; gunfire is heard; Petey Piranha screams in pain.
Yoshi: You were saying?
Ralphfan: SECURITY!
Security takes Yoshi away.
Weather
Hello gobbly goobers! I'm Koopster 64! Although this is unofficial, I'll write this for that idiot Flicky! Anyway, this is the weather.
Monday: It's going to be sunny! It'll be like Isle Delfino out here!
Tuesday: It's going to be slightly cloudy. Hey, has anyone noticed the clouds are watching us?
Wednsday: It's even more cloudy. And the clouds are STILL watching us. I'm starting to think this is a conspiracy.
Thursday: It's majorly cloudy, don't go outside, as the ever so watching clouds is capable of mind control.... and stuff.
Friday: It'll be snowy. The snow will unusually be going up. Those are really the souls of the lives the clouds has taken over.
Saturday: The clouds will begin getting tired of their mind control regime and start a heavy rain! Stay inside, and avoid flash floods!
Sunday: The clouds will become the overlords of the planet and they'll award us with a bright sunshine!
Injuries and Arrests
FLICKY HAS NOT GIVEN US HIS SECTION FOR THIS MONTH. ONE MORE TIME AND HE WILL BE FIRED!
Some interesting elements:
1. Originally, an almost compltely different version of the game was to be produced. The game was to be titled Dragon King: The Fighting Game, and had no Nintendo characters.
3. It has been suggested that Princess Peach, Bowser, Mewtwo, Meowth, Pit, and King Dedede were supposed to be playable.
4. Final Smashes, and potentially Smash Balls, were supposed to appear. Sakurai even has recordings of the character's voices during these.
I liked these interesting elements. Now, let's take a closer look:
1. You know, that would've just ruined the series. Completely ruined it. Luckily, the game was changed to the current version, as the other would not set the right 'atmosphere,' as Sakurai put it, for a Nintendo console.
2. That stage certainly looks wacky. But being a Kirby fan myself, I couldn't say no to two more stages. As for why I think they were cut out, well, I think it would upset the 'balance' between the series included throughout the game. You know, 3 Kirby stages, and 1 or 2 for the others.
3. Well, let's face it. There is no way the N64 could hold all that data. But expanding the roster would've helped the game, but I guess you could say the small selection it actually had was acceptable. Let's not forget, most of those characters were playable in the later games!
4. Once again, having the bright display of final smashes may very well have just overloaded the N64 system. The fact that the idea existed back then kind of shocks me, but it was a worth while wait to see the smashes when Super Smash Bros Brawl was released.
Another issue, delivered to you on-time. I think this one is my personal favorite because of those pretty awesome beta elements of such a classic game. Well, keep writing that feedback, and I'll see you in the next issue!

Koopa Bros. vs. Axem Rangers
I'm back with my third Character Comparison! This comparison is triggering a face-off between two RPG Classic teams, The Koopa Bros. and the Axem Rangers! Both are villainous teams, work for someone and are parodies of TV show heroes! OK, now let's get started!
Physical Appearence
Koopa Bros.
The Koopa Bros. are koopas wearing ninja masks similar to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They wear green gloves, green shoes and colored shells.
Axem Rangers
The Axem Rangers are rangers wielding sharp axes. Their colors look similar to the Power Rangers.
Parodies
Koopa Bros.
The Koopa Bros. are based off the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Both are teenagers, are turtles, have masks and know karate!
Axem Rangers
The Axem Rangers are based off the Power Rangers. Both are rangers and have similar colors.
Personality
Koopa Bros.
The Koopa Bros. call themselves the coolest of cool. They usually show-off their moves and talk cool.
Axem Rangers
The Axem Rangers are teenagers as well. They like sticking together, helping eachother and have strong likes for pleasing their boss.
Wrapup
I know, this comparison is a little short but don't worry, more are on the way! So, click "Show" to see our winner!

Well, here is another mediocre…. Erm…. Wonderful? Issue of the shrooms very own…. REVIEW SECTION! Sorry if this is a little late, but this month I got sent to the hospital, had to present a speech, got promoted from my school, and many other things. Back on topic, it was really hard for me to pick this month’s game. So please please put suggestions on my talk. Anyway, I decided to pick Super Mario Galaxy for this month’s review. On any review site, you will see reviews that say something like “This game is the best work Nintendo has done since Super Mario 64,” ones that say “not worth the hype” and others that say “The worst game in the super Mario series.” But which one do you trust? Read the review to find out all that….. and more!!!!!!
Story
Well the story…. You are trying to save the princess, again…. And Bowser tries to take princess peaches castle. (think Paper Mario) You fall of and find yourself on a distant world. After finding a princess called Rosalina, you go off and find a giant star. The star is used to power Rosalina’s observatory. You can now go to some other galaxies. The only other thing that happens story wise happens at the end of the game, and of course I’m not giving that away!
Gameplay
Ze gameplay: outstanding. If you have played super Mario 64 or super Mario sunshine, controls and moves are similar. Your new weapon/ attack this time is a star spin. You quickly spin around and knock an enemy silly. You then proceed to kick them off the planet you’re on. Speaking of planets, obviously this game is set in space. You may think “Planets? What’s the deal about stupid planets?” How wrong you are. Super Mario galaxy introduces the concept of gravity. That’s right, you can try to jump over a pit and use the planets spherical shape to vault over the gap. In addition, if you can’t find a way to get off the planet you’re on, if you find a planet with a larger gravity, you can jump and get caught by that planets gravity. In some puzzles, you can change the gravity, so it defiantly makes the game interesting. As for the battle system: Well, I told you about star spinning. You can also jump on enemies, or shoot star bits. Star bits are collectables that are the currency of Super Mario Galaxy. You can shoot them or buy stuff with them. Not much to say.
Diversity of enemies
The enemies are plentiful; you will pretty much find a new enemy per world or sometimes per level. I can’t really say that I was bored by them. It’s a nice surprise to actually see enemies different from area to area. You will not be bored because of the enemies, and the battle system is smooth, simple, and fun.
Diversity of Levels
As for the levels: Here’s how it breaks down. Each world is called a dome; each dome has about 5 worlds/ galaxies. 2-3 of the galaxies have 3 levels, 1-2 of them have one, and one has a boss level, where you fight Bowser or one of Bowser Jr.’s minions. Overall, I would personally have just one world with 8 missions, but several with three is okay too. You won’t be disappointed, with 6 domes and 20+ galaxies, the levels aren’t boring.
Replayability
I will skip the diversity of characters, as there is only one person you can play as. (Or is there?) Onto the replayability. After you beat the game, you can collect 120(!) stars. After you collect 120 stars, you can play the game again with some….. minor changes. So, in other words, you will be occupied for days. If you hope to collect all 240 stars, be prepared to have no life for a couple of months.
Pros
- Great and smooth gameplay.
- Good diversity of enemies and levels.
- Hours of Replayability.
Cons
- Story could have been built upon just a bit more.
- Can get a little too challenging when you have to collect all the stars.
Summary
- Story: 8/10
- Gameplay: 10/10
- Diversity of enemies: 8/10
- Diversity of levels: 9/10
- Replayability: 9/10
- Challenge: 7/10
- Total: 8.5 B+
- Total without story: 8.6 B+
- Total without challenge: 8.8 B+
Let me quickly explain the addition to the summary. Diffuculty means how hard or easy it was. If it is too easy, I will give it a low rating, if is too hard, I will also give it a lower rating. I will also present the total without the difficulty because some of you enjoy the challenge, or like an easy game. That being said, The two main things that brought this game down is the difficulty and diversity of enemies. The game was really hard at the end, as some of the levels made me want to smash the controller. The reason I gave it a 7, was, the game was really easy at the beginning, so it kind of balanced out. I gave the diversity of enemies an 8 because even though there were technically a lot of enemies, you didn’t really notice because a lot of them you saw once. It wasn’t bad either, as each enemy is different. The final verdict? This is way better than the previous two installments. The innovation in the gameplay was huge, the puzzles were amazing, but be prepared for some serious challenges. Buy it if you are looking for something different or if you are a fan of Sunshine, Super Mario 64, or any other 3d platformers. A new gamer can easily enjoy this game, too. So BUY IT!
