Another Name Idea
Nintendo's website's Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door page refers to him as "ornery mini-Yoshi". Could "mini-Yoshi" be his name? They sorta say it like it's an official name, but the fact that "mini" isn't capitalized gives me a few doubts... --YellowYoshi398 09:59, 6 January 2007 (EST)
Nope, not official. The game itself is more official-and the game never calls him any other name than the name you give him OR just Yoshi (or Gonzales Jr.). Excuse me, but I do not recall the yoshis in Paper Mario speaking in parenthesis. (The trivia states that unlike the other RPGs, this yoshi doesn't speak in parenthesis).--Topmonhit 15:39, 21 December 2009 (EST)
:They do in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and I believe in the Mario & Luigi series as well. Redstar 15:45, 21 December 2009 (EST)
::Yes. But if "other RPGs" are insiniuting "non-Paper Mario RPGs", why is it specifically stated with just this character when it's all yoshis in the Paper Mario series? Just seems pointless or weird or off to me. One of those. Not sure which.--Topmonhit 15:53, 21 December 2009 (EST)
:::Feel free to revise or remove the trivia point. Personally, I don't find it notable as a trivia. The "speaking in parentheses" is a mechanic to illustrate the character is speaking in another language, but is being translated for your convenience. The Yoshi Kid doesn't speak in parentheses because, quite obviously, he's speaking the same language as Mario. Redstar 16:24, 21 December 2009 (EST)
::::Yeah, I basically see it as "TRIVIA!!!! this yoshi... is like EVERY OTHER YOSHI in paper mari ogames! also, it doesn't swallow things and has hair!"--Topmonhit 16:35, 21 December 2009 (EST)
Article name
Can we settle this? The current name, with the game in parentheses, is atrociously long. Would anyone oppose moving it to simply "The Yoshi Kid"? While "Yoshi Kid" would be preferable, it's not necessarily a name but a title and it was brought up that there are "other" Yoshi "kids". Adding the the makes it obvious that this is a specific Yoshi kid. I just think it works better. Redstar 02:54, 24 December 2009 (EST)
:Yoshi Kid sounds good. There are two Yoshis in TTYD(one is found on the Excess Express after you beat world 6) but this article only mentions the Yoshi partner... That just gave me another idea: Why not Yoshi (partner)?
::I agree with Fawfulfury65. Another suggestion for the article name is the name he is given when you do not enter a name. Unless Yoshi is his default name.
I believe Yoshi is the default name - it's the closest thing to an "official name" for this character.  Although he is called the Great Gonzales Jr. as well... Culex 22:13, 7 April 2010 (EDT)
I put in the conjecture template, because Yoshi isn't the official name. "closest thing to and 'official name'" doesn't mean it is an official name. 17:11, 3 May 2010 (EDT)
:You are incorrect, KS3. "Yoshi" is the given name to this character if no name is given, thus making it official.
::Actually, it should not be moved. The latest appearance of the character was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where it appeared as a sticker. The name was "Yoshi (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)" and the latest reference always takes precedence, as per MarioWiki:Naming.

Yellow
A topic on GameFAQs says that somebody got a yellow Yoshi. Should we put it in?

:From the looks of the forum posts that follow it looks like spam (Captain Obvious to the rescue!), plus some random guy online is not the most reliable source, so no. IMO.
::A Yellow Yoshi's typical behavioral traits would conflict with the character's scripted personality anyway; that's probably why it wasn't an optional color. If he came out yellow, he probably would've walked off in the middle of the Armored Harriers fight to go sleep until meal time. --Dus T. 13:58, 22 April 2011 (EDT)
The base on the color timer
Is the timer that determines the Yoshi's color based on gameplay (meaning if you save and quit, the timer stops from save point to when you open your file), or does it refer to the GameCube/Wii clock like the Happy Lucky Lottery (meaning the timer keeps ticking no matter what)? --Dus T. 09:09, 22 April 2011 (EDT)

How are you supposed to hatch the egg to get a green one within six minutes?? That's, like, impossible!
Fawful117: The user arena! An awesome new thing!!! 13:34, 7 February 2012 (EST)
I did it. Also I believe if you are over the time for the last Yoshi color than it repeats the colors. SO that is actually possible to get a green Yoshi. Also this is more forums talk than discussion. 16:29, 7 February 2012 (EST)
Any way to get GREEN yoshi NOT having the 2nd cycle?
Yeah I would prefer traditional things so I would like a GREEN yoshi kid. I played the game on my emulator and tried to "speedrun" that section within 6 mins, and ... finally got a RED yoshi. My emulation was slow enough, and I played the game as quickly as I could (but not like pros). So I'm asking if there's any way to beat that part in 6 mins (I mean, 6min*60s*60fps=21600 frames, not real 6 minutes, otherwise the game would have given me a random yoshi which is not necessarily green or red)?? user:670839245 (local talk | leave personal message here | block locally)17:17, 5 April 2014 (EDT)
I had no idea you could get another color that's not green in that game.  It was a nice surprise for me when he hatched and it turned out he was red!  In my next time playing through I'll test those theories on how to get a green one.  - Mr.L
Mini-Yoshi
His smash trophy is called Mini-Yoshi. Should the name be changed to that since it's an official source? -- 19:10, 3 May 2015 (EDT)
In the Italian version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Yoshi is indeed a Baby Yoshi
I just noticed that the Italian version of Wonky's tale about the Yoshi's colors reveals much more than the English version. You can see the actual text here:<br />
PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 1.png, PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 2.png, PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 3.png, PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 4.png, PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 5.png, PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 6.png<br />
Here is a translation:
In the far far south, in a remote little island, the Yoshis live.<br />
As you surely know, MiniYoshis are Yoshis just hatched from the eggs.<br />
It seems that based on the conditions when hatching, the MiniYoshi's color changes.<br />
To know what his color will be, you have to wait until he hatches from the egg.<br />
By the way, the color of your party's MiniYoshi is beautiful indeed!<br />
For sure when he grows up he will be a magnificent Yoshi!
We can see two interesting aspects:
# MiniYoshis are clearly distinguished from Yoshis in that they are just hatched from the eggs,
# The Yoshi in Mario's party is clearly a MiniYoshi, not just a regular Yoshi,
Since MiniYoshi is a translation for Chibiyosshī, which is the same name for Baby Yoshis used in Super Mario World, it's clear that in the Italian version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Yoshi is a Baby Yoshi.
Now, it would be interesting to know, since the Italian version contains an explicit description of what a Baby Yoshi is, while the Japanese version even uses the same name from Super Mario World, if this different version of Wonky's tale stems directly from the Japanese version, or is just an addition made in the Italian version.<br />
What do you think? Can someone help in this?--Mister Wu (talk) 22:25, 8 August 2015 (EDT)

:Well, in the Italian localization of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, which is what I played, Miniyoshi has always been his name, and his Japanese name was always that of Baby Yoshis rather than adult Yoshis, so I'm not opposed to moving it.--Mister Wu (talk) 21:01, 20 November 2017 (EST)

Remake name change
As confirmed by a recent survey that Nintendo has been sending out related to the remake, his official name seems to be "Yoshi Kid". I think his name should be changed to that once the remake releases. ReeceeYT 03:57, April 13, 2024 (EDT)
: He's also been referred to as simply "Yoshi" in other marketing material for the remake, so that seems to be the more commonly used name? It is bizarre though that "Yoshi Kid" was used in the survey. We'll have to see what happens by the time the remake releases, I guess. :::What's kinda funny is that this article was originally named "Yoshi Kid" from the start, up until Super Paper Mario called him "Yoshi" through the Catch Card. It was decided upon that "Yoshi Kid" was not the character's official name... but, now that it IS officially used in the game after all, it might be worth considering scouring through official sources if the "Yoshi Kid" name had been used before. After all, the Nintendo Switch release seems to have kept most character names in the English translation intact, even down to the whole "Chestnut King" thing from Luigi's story. 20:00, May 25, 2024 (EDT)
::::"Yoshi Kid" comes from his counterparts in the first Paper Mario that you have to play hide-and-seek with (and is presumably used in reference to this guy now for consistency with that).... which supports the idea that this page should just be merged with Baby Yoshi. :::::Absolutely not, this character is definitely notable enough to have his own article. 21:26, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
::::::Well, he's the only Baby Yoshi in the game, so it can be viewed as a character/species inconsistency like the one that is one of the main characters in Tetris Attack, or the important Lakitu in Minion Quest that never got its own page despite appearing alongside others, or how DK Jr or Koopa Kid appeared as a species when they needed to be. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:35, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
:::::::Only Yoshi kid in the game or not, he's a major character and it will be very bad organisation if we cram it all in the Baby Yoshi article rather than giving the major character his own article. If we can split Bob-omb (Paper Mario: The Origami King) or Ruddy Road Paint Guy (the latter I attempted to propose merging which failed), then there's no reason this Yoshi Kid can't stay split. 21:49, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
::::::::Inclined to agree with Nightwicked. This Yoshi is a separate character with a unique design (well, six unique designs) not shared with any character, plus he got his own personality.<br>Also, I REALLY doubt someone thought to name this article "Yoshi Kid" because of the Yoshi Kids from the first game back in 2005, when the most relevant article for them wasn't created until 2007. It's a biiit of a stretch. The way I see it, either someone made up the "Yoshi Kid" name on the spot when creating this article, or they got the name from some place that's inaccessible now (e.g. the official Paper Mario: The Thosand-Year Door website. "Oh hey, 'Chibi Yoshi' was translated as 'Yoshi Kid' in their only other appearance in this series." Maybe they didn't think to cross-reference Super Smash Bros. this time, and that's all there is to it. But as for a merge? I'm with Nightwicked, and keep in mind, even if you ignore the inconsistencies with Baby Yoshi translations, this character in particular still has a unique second name (Great Gonzales Jr.) and 'Yoshi' is just the default name. (For that matter, it looks like 'Mini-Yoshi' and 'Yoshi Kid' are still too long since they kept the 8-character limit.) Gonzales Jr.?[edit]

Should we change this article to The Great Gonzales Jr?. It's an official name. Paper Jorge ( Need to tell me something? Go to my talk page.·Contributions·) 19:03, 3 November 2006 (EST)

I think that would be a good idea. -- Sir Grodus

The closest thing to a real name is "Great Gonzales Jr." yoshi kid is what the wiki refers to him as.--Lord Crump 19:53, 3 November 2006 (EST)

Yes, Yoshi Kid is not official. Great Gonzales Jr. is probably the only "official" name he has. Paper Jorge ( Need to tell me something? Go to my talk page.·Contributions·) 23:18, 3 November 2006 (EST)

Should we change Mario to the Great Gonzales? =P Seriously though, what's the default name if you don't write anything? That's another possible option. Also, isn't the Japanese name Chibi Yoshi, or Yoshi Kid? -- Son of Suns

His default name is simply Yoshi. -- Sir Grodus

I have an idea! How about someone just transfers This main article to the Yoshi article, and simply state that the name you give him is optional?--PeteyPiranhaLover 22:24, 14 December 2006 (EST)

No. He is a distinct and seperate character. -- Son of Suns

Another Name Idea[edit]

Nintendo's website's Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door page[1] refers to him as "ornery mini-Yoshi".

A sprite of Mayor Penguin from Paper MarioPaper Jorge

The Japanese name for him is Chibi Yoshi (no joke!). Bentendo.png Talk - how ye like meh sig?

Crazy Name Idea[edit]

I got one...maybe the article every time it says Yoshi Kid it will be replaced with which contains the name you gave your Yoshi Kid.

Questionable information[edit]

Parenthesis[edit]

Excuse me, but I do not recall the yoshis in Paper Mario speaking in parenthesis. (The trivia states that unlike the other RPGs, this yoshi doesn't speak in parenthesis).--Topmonhit 15:39, 21 December 2009 (EST)

They do in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and I believe in the Mario & Luigi series as well. Redstar 15:45, 21 December 2009 (EST)
Yes.
Feel free to revise or remove the trivia point.
Yeah, I basically see it as "TRIVIA!!!! this yoshi... is like EVERY OTHER YOSHI in paper mari ogames! also, it doesn't swallow things and has hair!"--Topmonhit 16:35, 21 December 2009 (EST)

Article name[edit]

Can we settle this? The current name, with the game in parentheses, is atrociously long. Would anyone oppose moving it to simply "The Yoshi Kid"? While "Yoshi Kid" would be preferable, it's not necessarily a name but a title and it was brought up that there are "other" Yoshi "kids". Adding the the makes it obvious that this is a specific Yoshi kid. I just think it works better. Redstar 02:54, 24 December 2009 (EST)

Yoshi Kid sounds good. There are two Yoshis in TTYD(one is found on the Excess Express after you beat world 6) but this article only mentions the Yoshi partner... That just gave me another idea: Why not Yoshi (partner)? Fawfulfury65
I agree with Fawfulfury65. Another suggestion for the article name is the name he is given when you do not enter a name. Unless Yoshi is his default name. Toad's sprite in Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle wow it's Kiryu (TC)

KS3 (talk · contribute) 17:11, 3 May 2010 (EDT)

You are incorrect, KS3. "Yoshi" is the given name to this character if no name is given, thus making it official. Hello, I'm Time Turner.
Actually, it should not be moved. The latest appearance of the character was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, where it appeared as a sticker. The name was "Yoshi (Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door)" and the latest reference always takes precedence, as per MarioWiki:Naming.

Yellow[edit]

A topic on GameFAQs says that somebody got a yellow Yoshi. Should we put it in?

R.O.B.Remembered Old BuddyROBSSB4EN.png

From the looks of the forum posts that follow it looks like spam (Captain Obvious to the rescue!), plus some random guy online is not the most reliable source, so no. IMO. Mario riding YoshiXzelionETC
A Yellow Yoshi's typical behavioral traits would conflict with the character's scripted personality anyway; that's probably why it wasn't an optional color. If he came out yellow, he probably would've walked off in the middle of the Armored Harriers fight to go sleep until meal time. --Dus T. 13:58, 22 April 2011 (EDT)

The base on the color timer[edit]

Is the timer that determines the Yoshi's color based on gameplay (meaning if you save and quit, the timer stops from save point to when you open your file), or does it refer to the GameCube/Wii clock like the Happy Lucky Lottery (meaning the timer keeps ticking no matter what)? --Dus T. 09:09, 22 April 2011 (EDT)

Any way to get GREEN yoshi NOT having the 2nd cycle?[edit]

Yeah I would prefer traditional things so I would like a GREEN yoshi kid. I played the game on my emulator and tried to "speedrun" that section within 6 mins, and ... finally got a RED yoshi. My emulation was slow enough, and I played the game as quickly as I could (but not like pros). So I'm asking if there's any way to beat that part in 6 mins (I mean, 6min*60s*60fps=21600 frames, not real 6 minutes, otherwise the game would have given me a random yoshi which is not necessarily green or red)?? user:670839245 (local talk | leave personal message here | block locally)17:17, 5 April 2014 (EDT) I had no idea you could get another color that's not green in that game. It was a nice surprise for me when he hatched and it turned out he was red! In my next time playing through I'll test those theories on how to get a green one. - Mr.L

Mini-Yoshi[edit]

His smash trophy is called Mini-Yoshi. Should the name be changed to that since it's an official source? --Fawfulthegreat64Logo.png 19:10, 3 May 2015 (EDT)

In the Italian version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Yoshi is indeed a Baby Yoshi[edit]

I just noticed that the Italian version of Wonky's tale about the Yoshi's colors reveals much more than the English version. You can see the actual text here:
Part 1Media:PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 1.png, Part 2Media:PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 2.png, Part 3Media:PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 3.png, Part 4Media:PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 4.png, Part 5Media:PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 5.png, Part 6Media:PMTTYD Italian Yoshi Explanation 6.png
Here is a translation:

In the far far south, in a remote little island, the Yoshis live.
As you surely know, MiniYoshis are Yoshis just hatched from the eggs.
It seems that based on the conditions when hatching, the MiniYoshi's color changes.
To know what his color will be, you have to wait until he hatches from the egg.
By the way, the color of your party's MiniYoshi is beautiful indeed!
For sure when he grows up he will be a magnificent Yoshi!

We can see two interesting aspects:

 1. MiniYoshis are clearly distinguished from Yoshis in that they are just hatched from the eggs,
 2. The Yoshi in Mario's party is clearly a MiniYoshi, not just a regular Yoshi,

Since MiniYoshi is a translation for Chibiyosshī, which is the same name for Baby Yoshis used in Super Mario World, it's clear that in the Italian version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Yoshi is a Baby Yoshi. Now, it would be interesting to know, since the Italian version contains an explicit description of what a Baby Yoshi is, while the Japanese version even uses the same name from Super Mario World, if this different version of Wonky's tale stems directly from the Japanese version, or is just an addition made in the Italian version.
What do you think? Can someone help in this?--Mister Wu (talk) 22:25, 8 August 2015 (EDT)

Move to Mini-Yoshi?[edit]

That's his trophy name in SSB4. With this game being three years old, is there a reason we haven't moved it? -YFJ (talk · edits) 19:35, 20 November 2017 (EST)

Well, in the Italian localization of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, which is what I played, Miniyoshi has always been his name, and his Japanese name was always that of Baby Yoshis rather than adult Yoshis, so I'm not opposed to moving it.--Mister Wu (talk) 21:01, 20 November 2017 (EST)

I think this time there is a bit more juice to the claim made by SSB4, since the German and Italian localizations and the Japanese name indicate that Mini-Yoshi is not likely to be a typo.--Mister Wu (talk) 21:17, 20 November 2017 (EST)

Thanks, good to know what was the source for the name of the trophy, although at the time the guide wouldn't have had priority over the in-game name. With a more recent game using the Mini-Yoshi term renaming the page required less discussions, as it was simply a matter of applying the policy instead of making an exception to it.--Mister Wu (talk) 20:04, July 9, 2021 (EDT)

Remake name change[edit]

As confirmed by a recent survey that Nintendo has been sending out related to the remake, his official name seems to be "Yoshi Kid". I think his name should be changed to that once the remake releases. ReeceeYT (talk) 03:57, April 13, 2024 (EDT)

He's also been referred to as simply "Yoshi" in other marketing material for the remake, so that seems to be the more commonly used name? It is bizarre though that "Yoshi Kid" was used in the survey. We'll have to see what happens by the time the remake releases, I guess. Meeper12346 (talk) 23:14, April 21, 2024 (EDT)
In-game that name is used for his music track so yeah. That is the newest official name to refer to him, so it makes sense to move to it. -Kirbeat (talk) 19:11, May 25, 2024 (EDT)
What's kinda funny is that this article was originally named "Yoshi Kid" from the start, up until Super Paper Mario called him "Yoshi" through the Catch Card. ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 20:00, May 25, 2024 (EDT)
"Yoshi Kid" comes from his counterparts in the first Paper Mario that you have to play hide-and-seek with (and is presumably used in reference to this guy now for consistency with that).... which supports the idea that this page should just be merged with Baby Yoshi. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:05, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
Absolutely not, this character is definitely notable enough to have his own article. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 21:26, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
Well, he's the only Baby Yoshi in the game, so it can be viewed as a character/species inconsistency like the one that is one of the main characters in Tetris Attack, or the important Lakitu in Minion Quest that never got its own page despite appearing alongside others, or how DK Jr or Koopa Kid appeared as a species when they needed to be. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:35, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
Only Yoshi kid in the game or not, he's a major character and it will be very bad organisation if we cram it all in the Baby Yoshi article rather than giving the major character his own article. If we can split Bob-omb (Paper Mario: The Origami King) or Ruddy Road Paint Guy (the latter I attempted to propose merging which failed), then there's no reason this Yoshi Kid can't stay split. Mario jumping Nightwicked Bowser Bowser emblem from Mario Kart 8 21:49, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
Inclined to agree with Nightwicked. This Yoshi is a separate character with a unique design (well, six unique designs) not shared with any character, plus he got his own personality.
Also, I REALLY doubt someone thought to name this article "Yoshi Kid" because of the Yoshi Kids from the first game back in 2005, when the most relevant article for them wasn't created until 2007. It's a biiit of a stretch. The way I see it, either someone made up the "Yoshi Kid" name on the spot when creating this article, or they got the name from some place that's inaccessible now (e.g. the official Paper Mario: The Thosand-Year Door website. Not sure if that ever called it "Yoshi Kid", but it wouldn't surprise me). ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 22:11, May 26, 2024 (EDT)
