Rename

@Bro3256 Perhaps this template can be renamed to "Famicom" since most of the releases originated from there before making its way to the NES. Super Mario RPG (talk) 15:19, June 1, 2024 (EDT)

The discussion above is short enough that I wouldn't like to just repeat it, but we have three options:

• Move to {{FC}}, since the Famicom predates the NES by two years. It's worth noting that the console's full name is Family Computer, hence the abbreviation I chose.
• Move to {{FC/NES}}, since it better reflects the actual name at the header of the template. If, for whatever reason, the use of the slash is not allowed in a template, then {{FCNES}} would be used instead.
• Keep it as {{NES}}. No further change.

7. Bro3256 (talk) Here's the thing, the Famicom and NES run on the same hardware but are configured differently between the two. I'd consider both to be under the same general 8-bit Nintendo platform but I wouldn't call one or the other to be indicative of the platform as a whole. For the purposes of this wiki, I think keeping them in the same template is the better option and renaming it to FC/NES would be more clear.

Keep it as {{NES}}

4. Arend (talk) Current name for nav template is fine, since this is an English Wiki, and {{FC}} could work just fine as a redirect. I'm also not really fond of the {{FC/NES}} or {{FCNES}} option, since that would mean we might have to treat other nav templates the same way, such as moving {{SMB2}} to {{SMB2/SMUSA}} / {{SMB2SMUSA}}, or {{SMB}} to {{SMB/SMB2/SMBTLL}} / {{SMBSMB2SMBTLL}}, or even {{SM3DW}} to {{SMB3DW/SM3DW+BF}} / {{SMB3DWSM3DWBF}}. It gets too convoluted and confusing.
5. Shadow2 (talk) This is superfluous, as most readers wouldn't even see the change. What does it matter what the template is called so long as it gets the basic idea across to editors?

10. Jdtendo (talk) Navbox names should be very simple, easily guessable abbreviations. Editors should not have to wonder "Wait, is this {{NES/FC}} or {{FC/NES}} again?".

Comments (Renaming the template)

The template header has since been changed to include the Famicom Disk System. Which means that option 2 (rename to {{FC/NES}} is no longer accurate. I don't know what to do now. I could update option 2 to include the Disk System (probably as {{FC/FCDS/NES}}, but I think I would prefer to simply not include the Disk System in the header or name. The change is just unneeded and it just looks too cluttered for it to be considered helpful. And this is an English wiki, so we should default to the English name. Starluxe 05:50, December 24, 2024 (EDT)
