Just to be clear, this is merging the move only, not the badge too, right? [[User:LinkTheLefty|LinkTheLefty]] ([[User talk:LinkTheLefty|talk]]) 09:34, July 13, 2024 (EDT)

: This is for merging both, because I thought merging the move only would be inconsistent with other move-unlocking badges. Wouldn't it? But then, this whole situation is inconsistent with other moves... I can add the option. I may disagree with it, but it would still beat the current arrangement. Merge to Super Hammer (move)[edit]

Settledproposal.svg This talk page proposal has already been settled. Please do not edit any of the sections in the proposal. If you wish to discuss the article, do so in a new header below the proposal.

merge move and badge 5-0-0
Because I didn't realize there was more to this in the previous proposal. I know this is a confusing mess, so please bear with me, we're going through this semi-chronologically.

  • In the original Japanese script of the original Paper Mario game, the moves unlocked by badges often had slightly different names than the respective badges. The Spin Smash badge was called Kaiten Nagūri ("Spin Striiike"), while the Spin Smash move was called Kaiten Hanmā ("Spin Hammer").
  • In the English translation of the game, these moves (aside from Charge and Super Charge) were given the same names as the respective badges. In Spin Smash's case, "Spin Smash", although the move is actually referred to as Spin Hammer in the tattle for Shy Stack.
  • In the Japanese version of TTYD, the badge moves were changed to have the same names as the respective badges. The Kaiten Hanmā ("Spin Hammer") move also returned, but without its associated badge, instead being unlocked when the Super Hammer is collected, and as such it kept its name. It can also now be used outside of battle.
  • In the English translation of TTYD, and only the English translation, the move was inexplicably translated as "Super Hammer".
  • However, in both games the move acts nearly identical. For 2 FP, Mario hits the enemy in front with his hammer with a spinning motion (which deals regular hammer damage), knocking it into the enemies behind it (dealing 1 damage to each). The only difference is the slightly altered action command, but many other returning moves had their action commands changed as well, such as Shell Toss and Bomb.

Now, I'm not very knowledgeable of the wiki's article naming policies, but I'm guessing the merged article should be named "Super Hammer (move)", being the latest name, but please let me know if that's not right. So, that's about it, please let me know if have any questions.

Comments[edit]

I personally think the translators for the first two Paper Mario games got mixed up by the Japanese names. PrincessPeachFan (talk) 07:43, July 13, 2024 (EDT)
