I don't speak Japanese either and I don't know anyone who has the skill or interest for a translation without being financially compensated for it. It’s comprehensive, especially with all the info regarding his one-off clothing and designs, and the text itself flows well enough. Some bitesized remarks: ”and a mouth resembling a cat's” i’m not super familiar with japanese cartoon iconography, but i don’t think an overbite-y upper lip, even a slightly wavy one, necessarily denotes a cat’s mouth. again, i could be dreadfully wrong on this though, as i have yet to do research on what japanese designers collectively understand as a “cat-like mouth” in a character. ”The gloves that he wears are inconsistent in design: they are depicted as boxing gloves, or as fingered gloves.” this may once again boil down to my misunderstanding of character design philosophy, but i think calling his handwear “boxing gloves” is conjecture. i don’t recall this character ever using his gloves as such. it may just be a case of stripping him down to the essentials, as he doesn’t really need fully rendered hands, and it’s also a recurrent design in nintendo characters (see: Miis) who aren’t known for boxing. simply saying “they have been depicted as either fingerless or fingered gloves” omits any unwelcome suppositions. -- KOOPA CON CARNE 06:00, April 29, 2023 (EDT) Ermm. It's been a while since I've played a WarioWare game in Japanese, but here are my notes on the translation: First page: This page looks fine, but I find it interesting that the artist has Yoshi address Luigi with "-san". I know that it's usually Toad characters that do that for Mario. Is that common for Yoshi's speech elsewhere? (More of a note to self here, but if you know the answer, do let me know.) Second page: Wario isn't saying "...Why is there something!!" It's more like, "...Not a CHANCE!!" He's rudely responding to Luigi and Yoshi's reaction from the previous page as if they're delusional. Third page: Typo. "It's name? WarioWare, Inc.!!" should be "Its name is WarioWare, Inc.!!" Wario is saying, "I went to the trouble of inviting you, so show a little more gratitude!!" In response, Luigi is exclaiming, "We should be GRATEFUL!?" (Because Luigi and Yoshi are both still visibly injured.) Fourth page: It's more like Wario is saying, "Just you watch!!" Wario's characteristic "ore-sama" doesn't have a terribly consistent official translation, if memory serves, but it's definitely much stronger than "I". Whenever you see Wario refer to himself in a grandiose/pompous manner, chances are, he originally said "ore-sama". I'd go with something like, "This is how the great Wario makes games!!" "First employee order!!" -> "First, (I) order the employees!!" "Just sleep and wait!!" -> "Then sleep and wait!!" "Well, here it is!!" -> "Well, something like that!!" or "Well, that's how it goes!!" "I didn't make it...!!" is more like "(You) didn't make ANYTHING!!" or "NOTHING was made!" "Oh! Did it!!" -> "Oh! It's done!!" Fifth page: "Well done, Wario!!" -> "All done, Wario!!" Dr. Crygor uses "washi" like a stereotypical old man. "Me too!" sounds a little out of his age range to me. I'd have gone with something more like, "I'm finished as well!" I don't know if "let these guys" sounds right for Wario in the next panel. I'd have gone with "make these guys" since he sounds more forceful. The word that Dr. Crygor uses to refer to himself isn't "mad scientist" - it's closer to "gifted scientist" or "genius scholar". Sixth page: Bottom-right is a little embellished. Just "IT STINKS!!" would be fine. Yoshi in bottom-left panel is more like, "Too stinky... I'm finished... No more..." Wario is giving his approval for the microgame, not saying that he's up next. I'd go with something like, "It passed!!", "Good to go!!", or even "Greenlit!!" He says this again to Mona on the next page. Seventh page: Mona should maybe sound a little less formal. I'd go with, "Next is me, the high-school girl!!" "How are you?" "Oh, I'm bad at it." is I think more like "What, you're serious?" "Such an inept kid." "And so the player is damaged!!" would be less redundant than "The player is suddenly damaged!!" "cursed" -> "badmouthed" Insults... Top: "BUMBLER!!" Top-left: "Green BURDEN!!" Bottom-left: "Nuisance to ALL!!" Bottom-right: This one is interesting because it alludes to Luigi's origin, ruiji. This is a little lost in direct translation. Maybe "LESSER LOOKALIKE", or if you wanted to 'localize' it a bit, "PHONY MARIO!!"? Luigi's "Nii-san" becomes "Big bro" in official translations. EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, I think he usually says "Aniki" instead, but it's roughly the same. Eighth page: "One thing's not enough to make money!!" is more "But one isn't enough to make a ton of money!!" Spitz (or Dribble, I forgot if they sound different) isn't necessarily praising Wario, but "Wario-tachi" - the plurality marker is a bit versatile and can be used to mean "Warios" (bzzt), "Wario's group" or "Wario and company" (that's more like it). I'd render it as, "Wario's need-for-speed team takes great pride in this next one!!" Ninth page: Something I just noticed, should "minigame" be translated as "microgame"? The microgame article lists a different Japanese name. If I recall correctly from the games, I think "minigames" are technically the more involved games that you tend to unlock and not the main microgames, but I could be wrong, would have to look into it a bit more. Otherwise, it looks fine. Tenth page: Wario shouldn't have the word "please" in his vocabulary. "If I, the president gets killed, you'll be sorry!!" is more "If I, the president, dies, you'll have bigger problems!!" or "There'll be trouble if the president dies!!" "Tests come at a cost!!" is more "Tests always come at a cost!!" or "Tests always come with sacrifice!!" Eleventh page: Acceptable, but Wario's "Let's go!!" is a little strange. He might be stuttering in a panic, but I take it what he's trying to do is tell Luigi to hit it more recklessly (kanji would be helpful). Twelfth page: It's fine. It's more obvious in Japanese that Yoshi is speaking to Luigi due to his "su" sentence ender and "Luigi-san" (which again, I think is unique here?), but that'd be a little lost in translation. Maybe one could localize it by adding a little Yoshi icon in the speech? Thirteenth page: "As expected of Wario!!" -> "As expected of the president!!" or "As expected of our president!!" "I'm doing the test to sacrifice myself!!" - Wario is not the speaker here. It looks like Spitz is talking due to the Kansai dialect (in other words, it looks like the left text bubble may be Spitz and Dribble, and the right text bubble Dr. Crygor and Mona, or maybe Mona is too stunned to speak because it looks more like Crygor's speech pattern). Something like, "You're makin' a sacrifice by doing the test yourself!!" Fourteenth page: "Help! I can't dodge!!" -> "We can't dodge THIS!!" (Also, Yoshi doesn't say "please" there.) "Good?!" -> "Ah, that's RIGHT!!" "Stop when I say this..." is more like "Do exactly as I say..." Fifteenth page: It's fine. Sixteenth page: "I can do it...!!" is more like "Th-That went well...!!" FYI, this last quote on the top-left is definitely Wario speaking, not Crygor, who's just posing with the other characters in the back. Notice the more aggressive speech patterns (casual "omaera" and telltale "ore-sama" as I mentioned earlier). I'd go with maybe, "If you guys got any bright ideas, be sure to let ME, WARIO, know about 'em!!" Why is Dr. Mario's accent in text but Luigi's isn't? And I believe that about covers it, more or less. Good luck with future scanlations! The problem is what i'm i gonna do with NCircleTV because i'll need document that somehow on the NCircle Entertainment article or not include it at all or i'm possibly allowed to include it still because it's connected to NCircle.
