== Question about Meta Categories == | |||
How do we remove meta categories from a page? Specifically I've been shortening some audio files as per media guidelines, but I don't see a way to take the relevant pages out of "Articles with audio files over 30 seconds". I've never messed around with meta categories so I'm probably missing something obvious, how do I do this? [[User:Tmjjmt|Tmjjmt]] ([[User talk:Tmjjmt|talk]]) 17:22, December 8, 2022 (EST) | |||
:If you're referring to the articles you just edited, usually it takes a while for them to be delisted from the category (They're gone now). == Syntax highlighter == | |||
Just found this page, so I was hoping one of y'all could help me. Recently, the syntax highlighter changed - I actually thought it was ''removed'', but I guess the change knocked it out of my preferences so I had to re-enable it. Even when I did, though, it was different. The old one bolded, italicized, and colored the text based on format: turning bold and italicized text the proper colors, turning links blue, turning reference tags green and templates purple, et cetera; as opposed to this new one, which highlights the text in various colors. (I think the old one did that too, but only when you had a template inside a template, or similar situations.) In any case, while I am happy I've finally managed to turn on some kind of syntax highlighting, I think the old system worked better for me. I admit there was room for improvement with how it handles images, but I like how it distinguishes the start and end of references and templates from the rest of them, and how with potholes (I think we call them "piped links" 'round here?), it distinguishes the page it's linking to from the text of the link. Is there some way to get that syntax highlighter back? I wouldn't mind installing a Firefox plugin if that's what it takes. I was wondering if anyone here has downloaded the video [https://lostmediawiki.com/Super_Mario_64_big_star_secret_(partially_found_YouTube_screamer_video;_2007-2012) Super Mario 64 Big Star Secret] since it's now lost media and I thought this would be my best chance at finding it. If you have it, reuploading it somewhere would be super awesome. (Also sorry if this isn't the kind of question to be asked here; this is the best place I could find on here to ask it.) <code><nowiki>{{FASTAT}}</nowiki></code> at the very top of the article. Next, go to [[MarioWiki:Featured articles]] and go to the "How to nominate" section. At the bottom of the section you will see a box you can type into. Most of it is already filled in, so you only have to type the name of the article you wish to feature there (for example, if you want to nominate [[Mario]], the box should read MarioWiki:Featured articles/N/Mario). Then, you must fill in the article to get the correct information. The <code><nowiki>{{substPAGENAME}}</nowiki></code> template should be the name of the article you wish to nominate. In the template, |nominated should have the correct time that you nominate it (it should go Hour and minute, month, day, year. For example: 16:55 January 1, 2024). Under the "Support" section, input your username there in a template with a hashtag in front of it (for example, <code><nowiki>#{{User|(Username)}}</nowiki></code>). Give out your reasons as to why the article should be featured. Other users can support or oppose your nomination. | |||
Hope this helps! {{User:Sparks/sig}} 22:10, February 10, 2024 (EST) | |||
== Wordfilter problems for Peach Showtime, leading to Error Code Plessie == | |||
So, I reached autoconfirm status yesterday (5 March 2024), but when I was working on [[A Parade on Ice]], I noticed something strange. I simply could not add any mentions of the name of the Ribbo*er no matter what, because apparently the wordfilter thought I was writing "bo*er", leading to "Error code: Plessie" and instantly logs me out too. Meanwhile, it appears a fair few other users could mention his name without workarounds, e.g. https://www.mariowiki.com/index.php?title=A_Parade_on_Ice&type=revision&diff=4178890&oldid=4178880. | |||
So I think that particular Theet's name has to be whitelisted in the wordfilter as soon as feasibly possible; while at the same time I wonder if I must've missed out on some important information, if other autoconfirmed users seem able to mention his name, while I cannot. == Captcha == | |||
I've been hit with the captcha a few times. And I'm faced with the fact that I don't know enough about Mario (I've played maybe 10 of the games listed here in any depth, and mostly ones from last century), so some of the captchas are trivia I just don't know. And when I try to reload the captcha to get a question I can answer, I run into "you're doing that too frequently" error messages soon enough. This raises a few questions: | |||
* If I don't know enough to answer all the captchas, should I take that as an indicator that I'm not qualified to edit this wiki? | |||
* I've been to other websites where they did something like "To prove you're a human answer this question. The answer can be found *here*(link)" Does MarioWiki have something like that? | |||
* What kind of edits require captcha? Does it depend on what level of user I am? Is this already documented somewhere on MarioWiki? | |||

Should we change "North America" and "Australia" to "Americas" and "Oceania" respectively?
I'm asking this due to the reasons shown below:
North America: While Nintendo neglected Brazil, due to its massive import taxes, they still sell their products there (even though they release them in a more slower rate there). I've even found more Brazilian people than Greek people in online games and Miiverse. A lot more.
Australia: Excuse me, but where is New Zealand? New Zealand is NOT part of the Australia region. Plus, Oceania has about 14 countries, so yeah. Gold Luigi (talk) 07:48, 12 July 2017 (EDT)
- We've decided to keep the Americas separate for regional aspects, but we will go through pages and mark Australia + New Zealand "Oceania" when applicable, like when release dates between the two match up. We'll have to adjust some things like templates, but you are free to help with that in article context if you feel like it. Sorry for the wait :) 21:30, 14 July 2017 (EDT)
- Thanks. New Zealand ALWAYS gets the same Nintendo content and release dates as Australia; clicking on New Zealand on Nintendo Country Selector will even redirect you to the Australian site. Just pay close attention to the link after clicking New Zealand. So I think you'll need to replace "Australia" with "Oceania" everywhewre it says "Australia". Also, will North America still be called "North America"? I really did not understand the part where you said you'll keep the Americas seperate for regional aspects. Gold Luigi (talk) 04:01, 15 July 2017 (EDT)
- Yeah, we're leaving North America and South America as is. 11:14, 15 July 2017 (EDT)
- Sorry for late reply, but it just came to my head! Are you going to announce the change sometime? If so, will you tell them about the change in other wikis too? Gold Luigi (talk) 18:40, 28 July 2017 (EDT)
- I don't think we need to. And what other wikis are you talking about? 19:21, 28 July 2017 (EDT)
- Well, I'm talking about wikis like Nookipedia, Donkey Kong Wiki, Zelda Wiki, etc., maybe even Wikipedia. They don't know about the change. And I think you should announce it, since some people won't know why we did this change. Gold Luigi (talk) 05:28, 29 July 2017 (EDT)

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I decided to change "Oceania" back to "Australia", since I believe that something just doesn't feel right when I see/say "Oceania". However, I will keep "Oceania" in Australia's flag description, in order to reflect the release dates of Australia. (I also did a similar thing on North America, Europe, and Hong Kong. Check their flag description if you don't know what I mean.) Gold Luigi (talk) 08:45, 18 December 2017 (EST) NOTE: I still haven't finished the revert. However, I do plan to continue it. If you want to help me, go ahead.
- After you made a big deal about changing it? Why? 11:36, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Yeah. I honestly should be ashamed for myself for even starting such a pointless, and I mean, POINTLESS question. Don't worry though. I 'm still OK, and I can still handle the edit if you like. Gold Luigi (talk) 12:19, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Seems pointless now to switch it all back. Just leave it how it is. 12:23, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Nah, it's OK. Plus, most people just say "Australia/New Zealand" instead of "Oceania" or just "Australia" and other times they don't even mention Oceania at all, similar to South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Could you also check the latest question I made yesterday? I really can't stand seeing Chinese occupying the same spot all the time, as it makes it harder for some people, including me, to read the Chinese names. Gold Luigi (talk) 12:36, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Point is, the change from Australia to Oceania was discussed last time, as your point was "Australia" shouldn't be the term to cover all releases in the Oceania region, which we agreed to. Now you want to change it back just...because? If you have a good reason to do this, I'm not seeing it. 12:40, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Because most people say "Australia" rather than "Oceania". These people will understand the "Oceania" but will find its use kind of odd now that they say "Australia". Gold Luigi (talk) 15:05, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Could you please stop reverting these changes I did? I told you, the majority of the video gaming community says "Australia/New Zealand", "Australia", or they never mention it. Super Mario Wiki is a fanmade wiki that was made by gaming fans, so I want for it to be fulfill the conditions for the majority. Gold Luigi (talk) 17:43, 18 December 2017 (EST)

- According to this policy, it is against the rules to convert a JPG file to a PNG file anyways. I'd suggest reading more about it on that page. LuigiMaster123 13:18, 25 November 2017 (EST)
- It's against the rules to directly convert an image from .jpg to .png. It's not against the rules to replace an old .jpg image with a new .png image. However, if you want to upload a file in a different format, it must be uploaded as an entirely separate file. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 13:20, 25 November 2017 (EST)

Can you separate Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese instead of putting them in the same place?
I believe that Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese being in the same place in the "Names in other languages" section makes it harder to read their names, especially if they're different from each other. Could you please make them separate in a similar way you separated the European and American variants of the French, Spanish, and Portuguese languages? Gold Luigi (talk) 18:53, 16 December 2017 (EST)
- I think that's a good idea. Are they even localized in the same areas, because sometimes, their simplified variants are different. Ray Trace(T|C) 15:27, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Yes. Example:
Names in other languages
Language | Name | Meaning | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Chinese | 新庫巴市 (Traditional) Xīn Kùbā Shì 新酷霸王市 (Simplified) Xīn Kùbàwáng Shì |
New Koopa City |
That's how we currently separate the Traditional and Simplified variants of the Chinese language. And Neo Bowser City's Simplified Chinese writing looks so different compared to the Traditional Chinese writing, despite sharing the same name. Gold Luigi (talk) 16:11, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Good catch; we already do this for Spanish/French/Portuguese regoinal differences, so why don't we do the same for Chinese dialect differences? (T|C) 16:19, 18 December 2017 (EST)
- Exactly. By the way, which Chinese dialect should be put first in the list? Traditional Chinese or Simplified Chinese? To be fair, I'm not really sure. Gold Luigi (talk) 16:37, 18 December 2017 (EST)

Sigh out
Dear people,
I'm very sorry, but I want to sigh out. I couldn't see any posibility to do that. How can I do that?
-Whomp King
- I'm assuming you mean "sign out". There is a "log out" link at the top-right of the desktop page, or in the side menu on mobile. 18:09, 31 January 2018 (EST)
No, I meant sigh out. Erase my account.
- I've...never heard of that phrase. Anyway, since you don't have a userpage and the only edits you've made are to this page, there's no reason to delete your account. Scramble your password if you want to. 18:17, 31 January 2018 (EST)
Yeah, again: I'm sorry. It's just... I don't do anything with my profile. So I can only change my password?
- Yep, input a random string of garble. Just be sure it's what you want to do. You may want to come back at a later date. You can just leave your profile alone for now and came back to the wiki whenever. 18:26, 31 January 2018 (EST)
Alright. Then I'll just forget about my account for now. Thanks anyway for your help. Perhaps, I'll come back again someday.
Can I get e-mail notifications when there are new nintendo/mario news?
Hi.
I would like to get e-mail notifications whenever there are updates to the Nintendo/Mario-news section on the front page. Is this possible?
— The preceding unsigned comment was added by CurvatureOfBetrayal (talk).
- Yes, actually. Provided you have your preferences set up to send you notifications, go to Template:News and click the "watch" tab at the top. Every time the template is changed, you will get an email notification. 12:49, 4 February 2018 (EST)
- To elaborate on what Alex said, here are some step-by-step instructions:
- Step 1: Go to your user preferences.
- Step 2: Click the "User profile" tab.
- Step 3: Make sure an email address is registered with your account.
- Step 4: Make sure "Email me when a page or a file on my watchlist is changed" is checked. Remember that this emails you when ANY watched page/file is changed.
- Step 5: Go to Template:News.
- Step 6: Click the "watch" button at the top of the page.
- Step 7: Set up your device to send you email notifications.
- Step 8: Wait for an email.

Something I've always wondered
Why does the Wiki have full coverage of the Donkey Kong series when there's already the DKWiki? RickTommy (talk) 03:05, 8 September 2018 (EDT)
- As far as I know, the DK Wiki was created after the Super Mario Wiki to cover all of the DK content which was being covered on the Super Mario Wiki at the time. I think Yoshi and Wario Wikis were also made, however they have since been deleted as much of the content was copied directly from the Super Mario Wiki, which still had the best coverage of the series. DK Wiki is fairly similar, but it's lasted longer as it has more original content. Either way, it's currently being merged back here for the same reason - too many directly copied pages and generally better coverage here. I'm not 100% sure on all of those facts, but I hope that answers your question. :) BBQ Turtle (talk) 03:33, 8 September 2018 (EDT)

Will MarioWiki ever get a visual editor?
I have been on this wiki since 2017, but I’m still not the best with MediaWiki syntax. Over at Wikipedia, I mainly use the visual editor. Mobile games and new content
What's the policy on how we handle "unused content" with mobile games that will likely get these characters later on? For example, Dr. Mario World has four unimplemented player characters and eleven unimplemented assistants at the time of posting, but more are supposed to be added. In addition, all the characters so far that have been added were originally in the "pre-release and unused content" section. Mario Kart Tour is another example of this. It just doesn't seem like it should say "pre-release" or "unused". JoeRunner (talk and stuff) 21:23, September 29, 2019 (EDT)

I have been working on a fanfiction based on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and I was wondering if it might be published on the wiki, possibly in the ‘Shroom. I'm pretty sure there was a writer who didn't have a wiki account one time. Doomhiker (talk) 19:52, January 30, 2020 (EST)

Bestiary like tables
Hi.
I'm not sure if I'm comunicating here corectly, but I have a question. I really like how on almost bottom of most pages, creatures and charcters have their stats and profiles throughout different games listed in a very great and easy to navigate in tables. I noticed thou, that Goombas, despite being, well, goombas, don't have one. I assumed that nobody just wanted to take up such a long to do task, seeing how they/ some variant of them, appears in almost every single game. I thought "why not" and tried to do so. Throgh the prosess thou, i found out that nowhere on the wiki, are stats of enemies and allies from bowser's minions series listed. I did some experiments and found out how goombas leveling works. I wanted to make a table, simmiullar to one of those in bestiaries, but I can't figure out how they work and where to look for them. They certainly aren't constructed on bestiary pages, nor are the same thing that is explained on "tables" page in help pages. I also thought, that using game icons for stats, instead of just text, saying "pow" or "HP" would make them even easier to read, but I got a warning, regarding uploading images and not using them anywhere. So here I am asking for help, can a normal member do that, or is it only for higher saff, and if so, how?
— The preceding unsigned comment was added by MichaelTheTiger (talk).
- Hi again, you don't need to worry about that, it's not a proper warning and you're not in any trouble, I was just letting you know as sometimes people just upload images without a purpose for them, but you've got a good idea and use for them. If it's the raw code for the bestiary templates you're looking for, try clicking the "edit" tab on Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions bestiary and it should come up, you could try to copy and adapt that. You should be able to do it as a regular member, though if you want to make a new page for it, you'll need to be autoconfirmed, which means you need to make at least ten edits and be a member for a week. I don't know exactly how the game works, so I can't give you exact help, but I hope that at least gives you somewhere to get started from. :) BBQ Turtle (talk) 16:27, February 2, 2020 (EST)
Mii Maker Mayhem
I was appalled to find out that there was no Mii Maker subsection for the Nintendo Switch and I want to change that. Upon further inspection I found there was only subsections for the eShop, Parental Controls, and home menu. I want to either add more subsections(for example, but no limited to; News, Album, and system setting uses like Airplane mode, Users and TV settings), or make a whole new page for the home menu with more subsections in it, or should I make completely new articles for each page? -PrinceFluff (talk) 12:40, February 5, 2020 (EST)
- "appalled" seems excessive, but I get what you mean. Sub-sections for Mii Maker, News, Album, and System Settings would work. There is already a Mii Maker redirect that leads to Nintendo 3DS#Mii Maker, so maybe the redirect can be turned into a disambiguation or a full article? 13:31, February 5, 2020 (EST)
- Sounds good. (I just typed "appalled" because I spent hours playing with the miis as a kid) PrinceFluff (talk) 14:15, February 5, 2020 (EST)

- Mii Maker is the only one that I think could qualify for an article, but it might be best to bring that up on Mii Maker's talk page. The other ones aren't as big to warrant full articles. 17:08, February 5, 2020 (EST)

Question about Meta Categories
How do we remove meta categories from a page? Specifically I've been shortening some audio files as per media guidelines, but I don't see a way to take the relevant pages out of "Articles with audio files over 30 seconds". I've never messed around with meta categories so I'm probably missing something obvious, how do I do this? Tmjjmt (talk) 17:22, December 8, 2022 (EST)
- If you're referring to the articles you just edited, usually it takes a while for them to be delisted from the category (They're gone now). If an article still has the category, making a dummy edit (an edit without making any changes) to the article should get rid of it. Mario JC 00:00, December 9, 2022 (EST)

Ahemtoday (talk) 14:42, March 6, 2023 (EST)
Super Mario 64 Big Star Secret
I was wondering if anyone here has downloaded the video Super Mario 64 Big Star Secret since it's now lost media and I thought this would be my best chance at finding it. If you have it, reuploading it somewhere would be super awesome. (Also sorry if this isn't the kind of question to be asked here; this is the best place I could find on here to ask it.) (sorry for posting this so much. It wasn't getting answered so I decided to post it again to get a reply) 74.64.68.192 13:06, April 9, 2023 (EDT)
Hopefully this doesn't come off as rude, but...
Why isn't anyone answering my question above? 74.64.68.192 13:55, April 9, 2023 (EDT)
Found a swearing userpage
Will an admin please fix this page? https://www.mariowiki.com/User:Kelton2

- Swearing is allowed as long as it isn't excessive, and this is their own userpage, so there's no problem here. Mario JC 23:30, September 28, 2023 (EDT)
I don’t understand how to nominate a featured article.
Can someone please explain what I need to write? Thanks!

- To nominate a featured article, go to the article you wish to nominate and input the Featured Article template
{{FASTAT}}
at the very top of the article. Next, go to MarioWiki:Featured articles and go to the "How to nominate" section. At the bottom of the section you will see a box you can type into. Most of it is already filled in, so you only have to type the name of the article you wish to feature there (for example, if you want to nominate Mario, the box should read MarioWiki:Featured articles/N/Mario). Then, you must fill in the article to get the correct information. The {{substPAGENAME}}
template should be the name of the article you wish to nominate. In the template, |nominated should have the correct time that you nominate it (it should go Hour and minute, month, day, year. For example: 16:55 January 1, 2024). Under the "Support" section, input your username there in a template with a hashtag in front of it (for example, #{{User|(Username)}}
). Give out your reasons as to why the article should be featured. Other users can support or oppose your nomination.
Hope this helps! Sparks (talk) 22:10, February 10, 2024 (EST)
Wordfilter problems for Peach Showtime, leading to Error Code Plessie
So, I reached autoconfirm status yesterday (5 March 2024), but when I was working on A Parade on Ice, I noticed something strange.
- As far as https://www.mariowiki.com/index.php?title=User%3ADandelionSprout&type=revision&diff=4181505&oldid=4181503 goes, it seems to have been fixed by now, for which I'm thankful regardless of how it got fixed. DandelionSprout (talk) 15:06, April 9, 2024 (EDT)

Captcha
I've been hit with the captcha a few times. And I'm faced with the fact that I don't know enough about Mario (I've played maybe 10 of the games listed here in any depth, and mostly ones from last century), so some of the captchas are trivia I just don't know. And when I try to reload the captcha to get a question I can answer, I run into "you're doing that too frequently" error messages soon enough. This raises a few questions:
- If I don't know enough to answer all the captchas, should I take that as an indicator that I'm not qualified to edit this wiki?
- I've been to other websites where they did something like "To prove you're a human answer this question. The answer can be found *here*(link)" Does MarioWiki have something like that?
- What kind of edits require captcha? Does it depend on what level of user I am? Is this already documented somewhere on MarioWiki?

Leaked and spoiler info
Is adding stuff based on leaks or datamining a game before it comes out even allowed? I've seen some updates on the TTYD remake and related subject pages that seemed to added base on those. Metalmario991 (talk) 11:40, 21 May 2024 (EST)
- I think there should be a penalty for anyone adding datamined content before the day of release. It puts the wiki at risk of getting takedown notices as well. Super Mario RPG (talk) 23:43, May 21, 2024 (EDT)
- See MarioWiki:Spoilers - information with reliable sources is allowed, but not files until the game is released. Mario JC 23:51, May 21, 2024 (EDT)
