The Onion is an item in the PC and SNES releases of Mario's Time Machine. During the Age of Discovery, onions were commonly eaten on ships to ward off scurvy, a disease that plagued many sailors. On Ferdinand Magellan's flagship, the Trinidad, Mario (after traveling back in time) was given an Onion by the cook while being told that it was the last fresh food on the ship. Mario then gives it to Juan Sebastian Del Cano, who was previously suffering due to his scurvy. Once he has eaten the Onion, he thanks Mario for making him feel better and goes on to talk about Ferdinand and the ship, including how the ship is severely lacking in fresh food.
