The Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary was an event taking place from September 2020 to March 2021, celebrating 35 years since the start of the mainline Super Mario series with the release of Super Mario Bros. in 1985. The celebration was originally announced on September 3, 2020, with the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct,[1] and was commemorated with in-game events, tie-ins, merchandise, My Nintendo rewards, and the announcement of several new titles in the Super Mario franchise.
The official celebration was concluded on March 31, 2021.

- The 18th Maximus Cup in Tetris 99 used Super Mario All-Stars as the primary theme[6]
- A Super Mario-themed Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online tournament called Super Star Showdown, only allowing the use of Super Mario-franchise characters, stages, and items
- The Super Mario-themed Super Mushroom vs. Super Star Splatfest for Splatoon 2 taking place on January 16, 2021,[7] in which players could choose between the Super Mushroom or Super Star as their favorite power-up
- Super Mario-themed furniture and clothings added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in version 1.8.0 on February 25, 2021, the items available starting March 1, 2021
- Visiting the official Nintendo Island ("Ninten") in the same game between March 9th and March 24th, 2021
- Mario's hat cushion added as a gift furniture in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp between March 2 and March 24, 2021; in addition, reissues for both Super Mario event items occurred during the same time period, with related My Nintendo Super Mario 35th Anniversary missions to be issued at a later date
- The 20th Maximus Cup in Tetris 99 used Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury as the primary theme[8]
Merchandise[edit]
- The Super Mario 64-themed PUMA RS-Dreamer Basketball Shoes. They are only available in one color: Flame Scarlet-Electric Blue. They released on November 27, 2020. [9]
- A Super Mario-themed clothing line from BlackMilk[10]
- Splatoon 2 Super Mushroom vs. Super Star Splatfest-themed shirts and keychains[11]
- 35th Anniversary line of products from Nintendo TOKYO. Some of these products include shirts, keychains, and stickers. These products are also coming to the Nintendo Official UK Store.[12][13]
- A collaboration with the ice cream parlor franchise Cold Stone Creamery called Super Mario Birthday Cake Batter Bash, with products including a Mario Kart-themed Ice Cream Cake called "Rainbow Rally", a shake called Mario's Super Star Shake, and a Cake/Ice Cream confectionary called Mario's Super Birthday Bash. In addition, ordering these products will supply a special My Nintendo point code that can be used on My Nintendo to gain 100 Platinum Points.[14] Late into the promotion, three colored spoons were also issued that featured Mario-related materials, with the red spoon utilizing Mario with a Super Mushroom, the blue spoon utilizing Mario with a winged cap, and the yellow spoon featuring Cat Mario.[15]
- A downloadable ID card for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit that can be created via player input. Creating the card is required as one of the missions.
- A new edition of Super Mario Compact Disco featuring remastered tracks and five bonus tracks.[16]
- A collaboration with the sportswear clothing brand Champion, featuring a clothing line themed to the Super Mario Bros. game.[17][18]
- A collaboration with the convenience store franchise 7-Eleven, featuring foods and merchandise themed after the Super Mario games, exclusive to Japan.[19]
- A special 35th Anniversary section was made available on the Nintendo Online Store, which included T-shirts/caps based on various Mario games that came with a plackard modeled after the game packaging; Penny Arcade series of pins specifically focusing on Mario and related games in the franchise; a tote bag, two T-shirts modeled after the Mushroom vs. Star event from Splatoon 2, and other apparel.[20] Clicking on a prompt at the top of the page before April 1 was also required for one of the My Nintendo missions relating to the anniversary.

- Gen Hoshino, a well-known Japanese singer and songwriter, starred in a Japanese commercial to promote the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary.[26] In the commercial, he also unveiled and performed his then-new song, "Souzou / Create".[27]
- Nintendo launched websites for Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.[28]
- The Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo Switch had been redesigned for the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary. A running Mario animation from Super Mario Bros or Super Mario 64 replaced the standard loading animation, and the eShop sidebar had a red background. Upon purchasing a game, either running animations is sped up and positioned at the top of the screen. From January 13, 2021, a running Cat Mario animation was added.
- Distribution of Super Mario Maker 2, Splatoon 2, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate medals to players who complete certain in-game challenges.[29][30][31][32]
- The Super Mario Maker 2 medal is awarded to top players (100 in Europe and Japan, 35 in North America, 10 in Australia and New Zealand) in the Ninji Speedrun level 35th Anniversary Auto-Mario.
- The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate medal is awarded to top players (100 in Europe and Japan, 35 in North America, 10 in Australia and New Zealand) in the Super Star Showdown Online Challenge tournament.
- The Splatoon 2 medal is awarded to top players from both teams (100 in Europe and Japan, 35 in North America, 10 in Australia and New Zealand) in the Super Mushroom vs. Super Star Splatfest.
- New Super Mario-related user icons for the Nintendo Switch were added on November 30, 2020.
- Amazon randomly delivered products in Super Mario-themed boxes even if the product had nothing to do with the series.[33] They also launched a Super Mario-themed page to celebrate the anniversary.
- During the Game Awards 2020, the London Philharmonic Orchestra performed a medley of Super Mario themes at the Abbey Road Studios in celebration of the anniversary, conducted by Lorne Balfe. The medley consisted of the Ground Theme from Super Mario Bros., "Inside the Castle Walls" from Super Mario 64, "Gusty Garden Galaxy" and the main theme from Super Mario Galaxy, and Fossil Falls' theme and "Jump Up, Super Star!" from Super Mario Odyssey.[34]
Quiz[edit]
One of the web-based My Nintendo missions featured on the official Mario portal as part of this anniversary was completing a quiz about Super Mario games.[35] To start the quiz, the user has to select a difficulty (Easy or Hard), each with different questions. After answering all questions on one difficulty, the user is shown how many answers they got right and can choose to take the quiz again on the same difficulty or try the other difficulty.
