Wing Mario Over the Rainbow (retitled Over the Rainbows in Super Mario 64 DS) is a secret level in Super Mario 64. It is entered from a light-emitting hole on the ledge left of Tick Tock Clock, also having one of Wario's rabbits.

There are a few large cloud platforms, which are traveled between using either the Wing Cap or one of the two cannons, both opened by speaking to the Bob-omb Buddy on a pink platform next to the lower cannon. Two of the clouds are transparent, meaning that they can be flown through but not stood on; one of the clouds has a Red Coin in the original version only and the other a 1-UP Mushroom. There are also green poles hanging from a cloud, where the Red Coin is relocated to. The remake features two trees and a Black Brick as well. Should the player character fall into the abyss, they land into the lake in front of the Mushroom Castle, or just outside the level in the original Super Mario 64 if they lose all health.

Missions[edit]

Cloud Hopping for Coins[1][edit]

Mario flies around the level to collect the eight Red Coins, then a Power Star appears at the Star Marker on the first cloud. The remake adds a Bob-omb Buddy next to the upper cannon who shows where the Red Coins are.

Black Brick (DS only)[edit]

A Black Brick is on one of the clouds, breakable by Wario only after either long-jumping or using a cannon to go over and destroy it for a Power Star.

Notes[edit]

  • This is the only secret course that utilizes cannons. It is also one of the few areas in the game to have more than one cannon, along with the Bob-omb Battlefield and Cool, Cool Mountain.
  • In Super Mario 64, Wing Mario Over the Rainbow is counted as a cold course, as Mario does not fall asleep while in it; instead, he shivers as he would if he were on Cool, Cool Mountain and in Snowman's Land. One possible reason for this might be to acknowledge the lower temperature due to high altitude. However, since neither Rainbow Ride nor Tower of the Wing Cap, both of which are also sky-themed, is counted as a cold course (as Mario falls asleep and does not shiver while in them), one likely explanation is that the theme is simply meant to attribute the same soft-stepping sound effect and embedment from falling attributed to snow surfaces to the clouds found here.
    • In Super Mario 64 DS, Over the Rainbows is no longer counted as a cold course, as Mario and others fall asleep in it like usual. The game does introduce a new cold course, Chief Chilly Challenge.
  • Due to data loaded to the course that is unimplemented in the final, it would seem originally the course was to be quite different, as Blarggs are assigned to this location.
