Bogmire is a shadowy Portrait Ghost that is found in Luigi's Mansion and its 3DS remake. He appears as a purple ghost with a large mouth, yellow eyes, and thin, constantly outstretched arms. Bogmire lives under a tombstone in the mansion's Graveyard, and acts as the boss of Area Two. According to his Game Boy Horror entry, Bogmire is the manifestation of the mansion's fear and despair; he does not speak, and the Game Boy Horror cannot scan his heart for text. His name is derived from the words "bog" and "quagmire", which refer to different kinds of swampland.

At one point, Bogmire was captured by Professor Elvin Gadd and turned into a portrait; like the other ghosts in the gallery, he was released when King Boo broke in. Bogmire's portrait number in Professor E. Gadd's gallery is 19; in the GameCube version, he is the only Portrait Ghost to display another enemy in the portrait, with his gold frame picture depicting a Black Bogmire.
Bogmire is the boss of Area Two. He is encountered in the Graveyard where Luigi can fight him after catching every Mr. Bones, resulting in the large headstone glowing. As Luigi approaches the headstone, lightning strikes as Bogmire emerges from the ground. After jumping back in horror, Luigi is sent to an unknown arena, where a large Black Bogmire comes out and approaches him, while several others also appear in the field. Bogmire teleports around the arena, with his shadow and lightning strikes relaying his presence. Bogmire does not attack, though the Black Bogmires do. Some time after the Black Bogmires spawn, Bogmire and his shadow vanish, and Bogmire spawns elsewhere. Bogmire can only be fought once Luigi gains access to the Graveyard by vacuuming up Spooky; afterward, a vortex can be accessed via his doghouse, taking Luigi to the Graveyard. Upon clearing the area of the Mr. Bones found there, the large headstone begins to glow. When Luigi approaches it, lightning strikes near the tombstone as Bogmire springs out, and Luigi jumps back in horror. He is then transported into a mysterious arena, where a large Black Bogmire comes out and approaches him, while several others also appear in the field.

Bogmire will teleport around the arena, with his presence announced by lightning strikes and the appearance of his shadow; his only means of offense is spawning shadowy translucent dopplegangers called Black Bogmires from the ground (and often from his actual shadow). Bogmire vanishes some time after the Black Bogmires spawn, signaled by his shadow vanishing, and he will reappear elsewhere and repeat the pattern. The size of his shadow upon appearing determines the size of the specific Black Bogmire that spawns from it.

To vacuum Bogmire, Luigi must suck up any of the Black Bogmires with his Poltergust 3000, shaping it into a ball that he can aim at Bogmire. If hit, he is enveloped by the ball of shadow, rendering him vulnerable. Bogmire is one of the trickier ghosts to vacuum up, and may break free of Luigi's grasp within a few seconds.

Eventually, after capturing Bogmire, Luigi is returned to the Graveyard, where a large chest appears containing the key to the Courtyard.

Bogmire is a portrait ghost in Luigi's Mansion and its remake. He is a shadowy purple ghost with a outstretched arms, a large mouth, and yellow eyes. Bogmire is the manifestation of the mansion's fear and despair; he does not speak (making him the only area boss without any dialogue) and does not have a heart for the Game Boy Horror to examine. His name is inexplicably a combination of the names of two types of swampland: "bog" and "mire." Bogmire's portrait number in the Gallery is 19.[1]

Using his Poltergust 3000, Luigi can change a Black Bogmire into a ball shape and then launch it at Bogmire. Upon being hit, Bogmire becomes vulnerable to the Poltergust 3000.[2] Bogmire usually breaks free of the grasp after a few seconds. Once Bogmire is caught, Luigi returns to the Graveyard, where a large chest with the key to the Courtyard appears.
