Yoob is a giant, Shroob-created Yoshi that mysteriously appears during the events of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. The creature known as Yoob originally starts out as an abnormally large, pink-and-green Yoshi Egg. One day, this egg arrives on Yoshi's Island (presumably placed on the island by the Shroobs). Although no one knows where it comes from, the egg instantly becomes a tourist attraction. For five Coins, tourists can actually witness the enormous egg close-up. However, the egg soon hatches, and Yoob is released. Since Yoob is apparently programmed by the Shroobs to eat Yoshis, it starts terrorizing the island, eating every Yoshi in sight. The remaining Yoshis flee to safety.
Yoob is a giant Yoshi-like creature created by the Shroobs that appears in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. The creature starts out as a large magenta and green egg on Yoshi's Island, where it becomes an attraction that tourists can see for five coins. When Yoob hatches from the egg, he begins to eat all of the Yoshis in the surrounding village. His name is a pun on "Yoshi" and "Shroob." Although Mario and Luigi encounter Yoob several times during their trek on Yoshi's Island, they cannot fight him directly.

When the four Mario brothers (Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi) first arrive on Yoshi's Island, the place is deserted. Most of the Yoshis have already been eaten. The few survivors are hiding in a small tree hut. Soon, Yoob discovers the Yoshi hideout. The Yoshis attempt to flee, but Yoob eats all of them, even Yoshi. The Mario brothers survive the attack. With no more Yoshis left in the area, Yoob leaves to search for more food.

Yoob is first seen in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time after he discovers a group of Yoshis still hiding from him on Yoshi's Island. He quickly eats all of them when they try to run away, including Yoshi and Kylie Koopa, although Kylie is quickly spat out. Yoob then leaves the area, though he is later seen eating and spitting out Kamek after the quartet find him on the island. After the adult and baby Mario Bros. defeat Kamek and corner Baby Bowser at the cliff, Yoob climbs to where they are, and two Shroob saucers appear and enlarge him. Yoob then proceeds to eat Baby Bowser, Mario, Luigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi.

The Mario Bros. see Kamek, who says Prince Bowser is on top of the cliff and flees, taking some Yoshi cookies with him. The bros. chase him and eventually find Prince Bowser. The babies eat his cookies, so he eats the shards he stole from the bros. and runs away. The bros. chase him and start trying to get the shards out of him when two Shroob UFOs appear. They fly off to Yoob, who is climbing the outside of the cliff, and zap him with a ray, which makes him huge, then fly away. He then proceeds to eat Baby Bowser and the bros.
Once inside Yoob's Belly, the group (except Baby Bowser) helps some of the previously swallowed Yoshis move forward in Yoob's stomach by pushing a Chomp Rock, which clears a path that lets them walk through Yoob's intestines. They then discover that part of Yoob's Belly is a factory for trapping Yoshis. The factory, maintained by RC Shroobers, stores Yoshis in eggs, then places them on a conveyor belt that takes them to Sunnycide. The group helps the Yoshis push the Chomp Rock away, then find Toadbert, who has forgotten everything that happened after he traveled back in time, but is still taking care of some trapped Yoshis. Toadbert tells them that Sunnycide is guarding the exit, and they go to confront it. Sunnycide uses the eggs in battle, and likewise, the heroes can free the Yoshis by breaking the eggs. Eventually, they defeat Sunnycide, and everyone, including the Yoshis, Toadbert, and Baby Bowser, escapes Yoob's through his digestive tract, while Yoob seems to stop functioning altogether.

If Mario and Luigi return to Yoshi's Island, they can find Yoob's inactive body still on the cliffside. They are able to re-enter Yoob's intestines as they wish, though they must exit through the digestive tract again.
Once inside Yoob's Belly, the brothers discover that Yoob's stomach is not a normal digestive system. In fact, part of its stomach is an egg factory, created by the Shroobs. The factory has Yoshis that get trapped in Yoob-like eggs on a conveyor belt which takes them to Sunnycide. After Yoob eats a Yoshi, the RC Shroobers handle the Yoshi. Then, the Yoshi is encased in a pink and green egg, similar to the one Yoob emerged from. This would presumably have turned the Yoshis into monsters, destroying the kingdom. However, the eggs are fragile.

Soon, the four Mario brothers put an end to the operation. To do so, the brothers aid a group of Yoshis (led by Yoshi himself) in their efforts to escape Yoob's body. By using Chomp Rocks that Yoob had eaten, the Yoshis manages to push the rolling stones through Yoob's intestines, creating a pathway for the Mario brothers to the heart of the internal factory. In the center of Yoob's stomach, the Mario brothers encounter the guardian of the Yoob eggs, Sunnycide. Sunnycide guarded the exit, preventing the bros., Toadbert and the Yoshis from escaping, forcing the bros. to fight. After a long battle, the brothers defeat Sunnycide, and, with the help of a Toad named Toadbert, free the remaining trapped Yoshis. Escaping through Yoob's digestive tract, the Mario Bros. and the Baby Mario Bros., Yoshis, Toadbert (and even Baby Bowser) made it back safely to Yoshi's Island. Yoob, who needs the energy provided by the Yoob eggs to remain operational, falls asleep. All the captured Yoshis are saved before they turned into monsters.

If Mario and Luigi return to Yoshi's Island, they can find Yoob's now-deactivated body attached to the side of a cliff. In fact, the Mario brothers can actually reenter Yoob's body to find items, badges, and beans the heroes may have missed during their first time through.
Although Yoob's first cutscene where he spits out both Kylie Koopa and Kamek seems to imply that he does not like Koopas and only intends to eat the Yoshis, this is contradicted a few times afterward. He has no issue eating Baby Bowser and the Mario Bros. after turning giant, and the Dry Bones that are found in his belly imply that he did in fact eat some Koopa Troopas off-screen. There are also various bones, including ribcages, scattered on the floor, as well as much larger bones and skulls surrounding doorways in his belly, suggesting he ate other creatures off-screen as well.

In the Super Mario-kun, Yoob appears in volume 36. Unlike in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Yoob originally was just a giant, carefree, friendly Yoshi who is gluttonous. His body is used as a vessel for Sunnycide, as Sunnycide takes control of the giant Yoshi and turns him into a Yoob. After the brothers get eaten, they defeat Sunnycide inside, which reverts the Yoob to his normal state. The giant Yoshi then eats the Cobalt Star Shards, which causes the brothers to panic, and ends the chapter. They manage to get the shards out of him.

His name is a pun on "Yoshi" and "Shroob." History[edit]

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]

Yoob attacking Yoshi's Island
Yoob appears in the Yoshi village.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

The Yoob in the Super Mario-kun volume 36
The Yoob and his backstory in the Super Mario-Kun volume 36.
