Big Boo's Haunt is a three-story mansion located in a small cage. It is the fifth course in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. Unlike most other courses, Big Boo's Haunt is one of the rare courses that is not accessed via a painting. Instead, Mario must travel to the castle's courtyard (after he has collected twelve Power Stars, fifteen in the DS remake) and defeat a Big Boo. The Boo will drop a small cage containing the course. Mario shrinks upon entering this cage. The level is bounded by what appears to be the bars of a cage, suggesting, along with his entrance into  the level, that Mario has shrunk. The background is that of a moonlit night in a dark forest.

When near the cage, the player's character shrinks down and enters it. This is the only course (in the original game) that does not share its theme with another course and has the most encounters with enemies containing Stars, with the Big Boo being fought three times and Big Mr. I. being fought once. The background is that of a moonlit night in a dark forest as well as howling wind.

Big Boo's Haunt is inhabited by none other than Big Boo himself.  There is a small shack on the side of the mansion that has a lift to the basement. In the center of the basement is a strange large merry-go-round. There is also the Mad Piano (a piano that comes to life and tries to bite Mario if he gets too close). Big Boo's Haunt is also home to Big Mr. I. There are two entrances into the main building: the front door immediately visible upon entering the level, and a single back door that leads into a room containing two Boos. This course is one of a few that contain bridges made of bricks that fall away when walked upon. It should also be noted that there is no way to fall "off the course".
In the remake, Big Boo's Haunt is the only main course that Yoshi cannot access entirely, since he can neither defeat nor eat Boos; this is also the only course to have a level inside it required to free another playable character, and it is one of two levels to have a secret level inside it (the other being Behind the Waterfall in the Hazy Maze Cave).

The level titles and numbers correspond to Super Mario 64 unless otherwise noted.

Star 1: Go On A Ghost Hunt
Big Boo's Haunt takes place within the cage. There are two buildings in the course: the main haunted house and a wooden shack off to the side (also known as the "House of Fun"). Around the haunted house are several Scuttle Bugs, and an entrance to a secret room with a couple of Boos is at the back of the haunted house.

This level is the same in both Super Mario 64 and its remake, Super Mario 64 DS. Mario must defeat every Boo on the first floor, and once every one of them has been defeated, Big Boo appears in the main room of the mansion. He can be defeated by being punched from behind, as he turns invisible whenever Mario faces him from the front. He is not very difficult to defeat as he really has no attacks besides bumping into you. He is also easier to hit because of his large size. Once Mario has defeated him, a Star appears on the second floor and a staircase appears from the ground to reach it. The locations of the Boos are:
* Found either at the back entrance room, or in the second door to the left. (Two Boos)
* Found in the left door in the back.
* Found in the right door in the back.
* Found either in the door across falling bridge or the door the right.

Star 2: Ride Big Boo's Merry-Go-Round
The haunted house consists of three floors, though only the first floor is accessible during the first mission (unless the player has unlocked Luigi in the DS version, in which case the player can easily jump to the next floor). The rooms of the first floor consist of, from left to right, a room with the Mad Piano, a room with a library, a room with a dungeon, a room with a collapsing bridge, and a room with a black pit and some platforms. If the player falls into the pit, it will lead them to the merry-go-round underneath. Once all the Boos and the Big Boo on the first floor are defeated, a staircase to the second floor appears.
This level is the same in both Super Mario 64 and its remake. Once he enters the course, Mario should enter the shack near the mansion. He'll take the lift to the basement and hear "circus music" as he progress onward. There will be a door that leads into a room with a spinning floor and Boo paintings around the walls. One painting near a doorway will shoot out fire while Boos will appear out of one on the left side of the other doorway. After Mario defeats five normal Boos, Big Boo will appear again and give up another Power Star once Mario defeats him in the same way he did in the first mission. This battle with Big Boo is slightly harder because of the rotating platform and fire coming out of the paintings.

Star 3: Secret of the Haunted Books
The second floor has the same number of rooms as the first, as well as the course's Star Marker. The second door from the left leads to a library with books flying out of the shelves, trying to attack the player. The end of the library leads to the first room from the left, which contains a Power Star. The third room has a wire-frame grate floor above the dungeon room, the fourth room has several caskets that rise when the player approaches them, and the fifth room contains a bookcase with Bookends and a large tilting platform that will drop the player into the merry-go-round if they stand on it for too long. The door in the back of the fifth room leads to a blue block (or red in the DS version), and a door above on a ledge leads to the third floor.

This level is the same in both Super Mario 64 and its remake. The third mission for the red-capped plumber is on the second floor. Once Mario reaches the second floor of the Foyer, he should take the right hand door on the left side of the room. This will lead him into a small library. As Mario heads around the library, small books shoot out from the shelves; these will injure him if not avoided, and are not to be confused with the books with teeth that attack Mario in other rooms. Once the plumber has rounded the corner, he will come to a wall with three books jutting out of the wall. If Mario punches or kicks them in the right order, the wall will move away revealing a door. If he hits the books in an incorrect order, a small book will attack him and the books will reset. Once he enters through the door, he will be able to claim this mission's Power Star. The correct order would be top, bottom and middle.

Star 4: Seek the 8 Red Coins
The third floor consists of a small hall with doors to the balcony and a secret room containing Big Mr. I. In the DS version, a Luigi painting that brings Mario to the Big Boo Battle stage is also present in the hall. To access the room with Big Mr. I., the player has to be Vanish Mario or Vanish Luigi and enter through the large picture of a Boo before the power wears off. On the balcony lies the Big Boo, and the player can long-jump from the platform to access the roof.

Mario has to collect the eight Red Coins scattered about the level. This mission is the same in both Super Mario 64 and its remake, except for the fact that in Super Mario 64 DS, one Red Coin is floating, and not under a tombstone like all the rest. The location of the red coins are:
* Behind the Mad Piano in the first door on the left.
* On top of the shelf on the right in the second door on the left.
* On top of the shelf on the left in the second door on the left.
* On a small ledge in in the door on the right.
* Hovering over the stairs.
* Up the stairs in the last door on the right, behind the bookshelf.
* Up the stars in the first door on the right, near a tombstone.
* Up the stairs in the first door on the left.

Star 5: Big Boo's Balcony
The shack on the grounds of the haunted house leads to an elevator that brings the player to large halls when stepped on. At the end of the halls is a room with water and a merry-go-round in the center, accessed by doors on either side. The merry-go-round has a large spinning platform in the center and several portraits of Boos. One of the portraits has actual Boos come out of it, and another acts like a flamethrower.

<gallery>
Mario's next journey takes him to another encounter with Big Boo. He'll head up to the third floor and see a door that will lead to the outside balcony, where he will meet Big Boo once again. After his third defeat, Big Boo will give up yet another Power Star. The Star will jump up to the roof of the house, and Mario will have to get up to retrieve it.

In Super Mario 64 DS, the level is the same as in the original, however it should be noted that the Star can only be retrieved by Mario or Luigi, as Wario is unable to jump high or wall kick and Yoshi cannot enter Big Boo's Haunt.

Back on the third floor, Mario will see a wall with a picture of a Boo. The power star he seeks is inside. What he must do is to have activated the blue ! Switch and to be able to use the Vanish Cap located on the second floor. He needs to quickly acquire the cap and rush through the wall on the third floor, where Big Mr. I resides. Once Mario defeats it, he will be rewarded with another Power Star.

As a mission exclusive to Super Mario 64 DS, this one requires Wario to complete the level. In the basement, there is a black box that only Wario can break. Underneath is a Star Switch that will activate the Star, which Mario or Luigi (Get a cap to become Mario or Luigi) must then travel to and collect before the time runs out.

*Whenever Mario defeated a ghost in the first star mission, "Go on a Ghost Hunt", of the level, Big Boo (or King Boo) would deliver the message, "Ghosts...don't...die! Can you get out of here ALIVE?" After the last ghost is defeated, he sends another message.

Big Boo's Haunt, also known as Big Boo's Mansion,[1] Boo's Haunted Mansion,[2] Big Boo's Haunted House,[3] and the Haunted House,[4] is a three-story mansion owned by the Big Boo, located in a small birdcage (also identified as a "carousel").[5] It is the fifth course in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. Instead of accessing the course via a painting, the player must travel to the Mushroom Castle's courtyard after they have collected 12 Power Stars (15 in the DS remake) and defeat the Big Boo containing the cage.

Layout[edit]

Big Boo's Haunt takes place within the cage. There are two buildings in the course: the main haunted house and a wooden shack off to the side (also known as the "House of Fun").[6] Around the haunted house are several Scuttle Bugs, and an entrance to a secret room with a couple of Boos is at the back of the haunted house.

Trivia[edit]

 • If the player activates first-person view when Mario is close enough to enter the course, the player can still move the camera for a bit before the screen transitions to the mission-selection screen.
 • In the DS version, a green cap appears on the Boo in the back room of the first floor. By using hacks to enter the course as Yoshi, it can be shown that Yoshi is able to tongue the cap off the Boo and turn into Luigi as if the cap were on a normal Goomba.
 • The music for this level samples "46 - Untitled" by Zero-G.[9]
 • The name of the 100-Coin Star is Beat the Boos![2]
