A strange colored substance floated in the sky, which Donkey Kong swam in to navigate through the level. The [[Helper Monkey]]s assisted Donkey Kong by throwing him into new colored substances. A black [[Hog]] impeded Donkey Kong's progress and was defeated with a [[clap]] attack. Near the end of the level, meteors rained from space. Donkey Kong avoided the meteors and ate the Grape bunch, clearing the level.

Primeval Ruins is the second area of the Grape Kingdom. As the name implies, the level takes place in an old abandoned ruin. Donkey Kong started the level descending from a moving [[platform]]. Bats tried to stop Donkey Kong, but they were defeated by his clap attack. A dragon helped Donkey Kong traverse though part of the level, which led him into a series of vines. Near the end of the level, a dead end blocked Donkey Kong's progress. Donkey Kong clapped between two candles, causing a new platform to appear. Helper Monkeys tossed Donkey Kong to the end of the level. Donkey Kong ate the giant Grape bunch and fought Grave Tusk or Hard Rock depending on the version.

The level is quite dark, but Donkey Kong can send out a sound wave to create some light. There are some bat enemies in this stage who glow in the darkness when hit by a sound wave, as well as many large, moving platforms. Primeval Ruins also features a few dragon-like creatures to carry him to new area, and Helper Monkeys also fill the level, teaming up to form a rope for the ape to swing on. Normal Helper Monkey also appear in bushes to throw Donkey Kong to higher areas. Although the level mostly features minor enemies, [[Iguanagon]] appears here, and must be defeated to progress. After Donkey Kong finished this level, he fights the boss, Grave Tusk (or Hard Rock in the Wii version).
