Mega Maw-Ray
A Mega Unagi in New Super Mario Bros.
First appearance New Super Mario Bros. (2006)
Variant of Maw-Ray
Comparable

Mega Maw-Rays[1], previously referred to as Mega Unagi[2], are a gigantic variant of Maw-Ray that appears only in New Super Mario Bros. Mega Maw-Rays appear in two underwater stages in the game: World 4-3, where they function as obstacles swimming to the left, and World 8-3, where one swims to the right and actively chases Mario (or Luigi) throughout the latter half of the stage. Mega Maw-Rays are very dangerous, and they destroy many objects in their path, such as bricks and ? Blocks. There is no way to defeat a Mega Maw-Ray. However, Mario can go "through" one by using a Mega Mushroom or a Starman and swimming through its back; he will be pushed away if he collides with its face. In World 8-3, if Mario tries to stay above or below the Mega Unagi and let it pass, it will swim slower and move towards Mario, trying to corner him in the top or bottom of the screen. If this is unsuccessful, the Mega Maw-Ray will eventually swim forward and vanish from the screen, but it will return after about one minute. Unlike Cheep-Chomps, Mega Maw-Rays cannot swallow Mario whole, but they instead damage him regularly.

Normal Maw-Rays are larger in most subsequent appearances and thus appear to be closer in size to Mega Maw-Rays, although normal Maw-Rays do not display the destructive qualities of Mega Maw-Rays.
