The intention of the move is to search for valuable items. The player can have a Yoshi sniff by pressing {{button|n64|R}}. Yoshis move slower while sniffing. When the Yoshi gets closer to a secret, he starts to sniff faster until a "!" pops above the Yoshi's head eventually. [[Poochy]] can also sniff out secret items in certain [[level]]s but barks to indicate being at a secret. Either way, a Yoshi can ground-pound the spot where the secret is to retrieve it.


To use it, the player must press and hold the {{button|n64|R}} button to make the [[Yoshi (species)|Yoshi]] start sniffing on the ground. Yoshi can move while Sniff-Sniffing, but he does so more slowly than normally, attempting to detect something valuable to him in the ground. When the Yoshi gets closer to something special, he starts to sniff faster. Getting close to a secret causes a ''!'' icon to pop up above the Yoshi's head, indicating that the secret is nearby. When the Yoshi is on the secret spot on the ground, he gets excited and signals the player by yelping and waving his arms. To retrieve the secret, the player must then make Yoshi [[Ground Pound]] the very spot where the hidden treasure lies.

Sniffing, or the Sniff-Sniff,[1] is a basic special move used by all Yoshis in Yoshi's Story. The intention of the move is to search for valuable items. The player can have a Yoshi sniff by pressing R Button. Yoshis move slower while sniffing. When the Yoshi gets closer to a secret, he starts to sniff faster until a "!" pops above the Yoshi's head eventually. Poochy can also sniff out secret items in certain levels but barks to indicate being at a secret. Either way, a Yoshi can ground-pound the spot where the secret is to retrieve it.
