After completing Super Mario 64 and earning 120 Power Stars, the grate on the castle grounds that was previously sealed opens to reveal a cannon. Firing Mario to the roof of the castle results in talking to Yoshi (on the roof), who will give Mario 100 1-Ups, and an enhanced triple jump. Also up there is a Wing Cap. In the DS version, this was done away with (since Yoshi is a playable character), but Luigi's final rabbit can be found on the castle roof, as well as a Power Flower (or Wing Cap if the player uses Mario). The roof in Super Mario 64 DS features a small fence around the area the three mushrooms are found.

In Big Boo's Haunt, there's a balcony/roof section of the mansion; this is where the player fights Big Boo. The player can get to the actual roof from here. Inside the double doors, there's a stage room. Up the stage is the double doors to the half-roof, half-balcony. In Super Mario 64 DS, there's a Luigi painting on the wall near the Blue Coin Block. The single door goes to the ledge in the library. There's also a Boo painting to the west. On the actual roof, there's a red ? Block.  It is possible to get to the top of the castle by climbing down the tree when the moat is not drained, or by a special technique all of the characters have to get to the roof without even using the cannon.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis
In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, the final level where Mario and the Mini Marios battle Donkey Kong take place on the rooftop. Here, the Mini Marios have to reach the top of the girder structure (which is designed similar to that of 25m in the original Donkey Kong), where Mario is. At the beginning of the level, a Mini Mario appears from the door labelled "M" at the structure's bottom, followed by more Mini Marios which occasionally appear one by one afterwards. If a Mini Mario successfully avoids Donkey Kong's obstacles (Fireballs, which spawn from Oil Drum next to the "M" door, and Barrels) and reaches Mario, he throws the toy at Donkey Kong, which makes him lose health. This is repeated until Donkey Kong loses all of his health. If a Mini Mario is hit by an obstacle, it breaks and health is lost. If all health is lost, the game is over. The music for this level is a remix of the Donkey Kong 25m and Donkey Kong Country Jungle Hijinxs music.
