There are 32 hand-painted characters taking the place of the various pieces: [[Mario]] as the King, [[Luigi]] as the Queen, [[Princess Peach]] and [[Princess Daisy]] as Bishops, [[Yoshi]] as the Knight, [[Toad]] as the Rook, [[Coin]]s as Pawns. For the opposing side, [[Bowser]] is the King, [[Bowser Jr.]] the Queen, [[Kamek]] or a general [[Magikoopa]] the Bishop, [[Birdo]] the Knight, a [[Goomba]] the Rook, and [[Koopa]] [[Shell]]s as Pawns. The pieces measure 3-inches tall x 11-inches wide x 11-inches long.

Super Mario Chess: Collector's Edition is a chess set themed to the Super Mario franchise. The set was released by USAopoly in September 2009. The rules of the game are the same as defined by the original game, with one side being white (heroes) and the other being black (villains). It is sold for about $20 in most American retailers.
