Flipflaps[1] (originally known as Bats[2][3]) are large, blue bat enemies that first appeared in Donkey Kong 64.
History[edit]
Donkey Kong 64[edit]
In Donkey Kong 64, Bats appear in Fungi Forest during nighttime, in Creepy Castle, and in Crystal Caves. Zingers replace Bats during the daytime in Fungi Forest. Bats attack the active Kong by quickly swooping at them. While Bats resemble the dive-bombing variants of Zingers, they will respawn compared to their counterparts. The Kongs can defeat Bats by either blasting them with their weapon, using their musical instrument, or by throwing an orange. They are not to be confused with the generic violet-colored bats found in dark places throughout the game, which are smaller and harmless.
DK: King of Swing[edit]
Since DK: King of Swing, Bats have been renamed to Flipflaps, and were given a slight redesign to have a more purplish body and a larger head. Flipflaps are enemies first encountered in Contraption Cave, and they most commonly appear in cave levels. They fly back and forth in either a vertical or horizontal line while swaying slightly. Flipflaps can damage the player upon contact; however, unlike in Donkey Kong 64, they do not attempt to directly target the player with an attack. The player can defeat a Flipflap by performing a charge attack.
Donkey Kong Barrel Blast[edit]
Flipflaps in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast are obstacles encountered in Mt. Dynamite, Scorching Canyon, Mt. Dynamite Remix, and Dynamite Run.
DK: Jungle Climber[edit]
Flipflaps reappear in DK: Jungle Climber, where they are introduced in Cool Cool Cave and reappear mostly in caves and forest levels. Their behavior is exactly the same as in DK: King of Swing, except that they only fly in a horizontal pattern. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can defeat Flipflaps by performing a charge jump.
