In Stage 2-3: Jelly Pipe, a Yoshi can go into a vase and enter a room with a slug crawling up, down, and horizontally on the walls. According to the Nintendo Power guide, this one coated the Jelly Pipe with slime.[2] Two slugs also appear in Stage 6-4: Magma Castle, where they are both fought in the same room.
To defeat slugs, the player must throw Yoshi eggs close to their eyes such that the explosions touches their eyes and causes damage. When a slug takes damage three times, it is defeated. Once a Yoshi does destroy a slug, he will get a special prize. In Magma Castle, any defeated slugs do not respawn; should the player run out of eggs after defeating one, they may leave the room to restock from an Egg Block nearby and return to defeat the other.
